Is Dood one of the boring adverts at the front or more interesting adverts at the back
I chuckled!! - I want to say that mine is like the 'and finally' story you get on regional news programs after a particularly dry politics report!
 2.
As a classically trained 'Cellist +1 to that. Cello/Bass doesn't translate from a fingering point of view because they are tuned differently. Being able to sight read is however useful if you want to do certain paid stuff. Theater stuff springs to mind. Other than that, If your in a band and gigging your set then there's no need to worry. Plenty of resource available like TAB and You Tube. Oh and Bass Chat of course! I know Dood won't like the above however!!! LC
Heh heh!! Funny you should mention Cello - it's an instrument that has always interested me from a distance. I love it's timbre and the range that it covers. Maybe that's why I like wandering up the neck of my basses a bit as well as the low LOWS!
 3.
However, having spent several years trying (and mostly failing) to get anyone on here to think past mainstream pop and rock and to listen to something else only midly challenging, in my case Jazz, I am fairly confident when I say that 99% of the people on here would probably be better off not playing a B over a C7 chord.
I realise the tongue is fairly well embedded in the cheek there, but I wonder if suggesting that 99% of the readership stay away from taking on 'B over C7' may be doing yourself a disservice. Maybe underestimating the ability of those who might know why something doesn't sound right, even if they don't understand the theory behind it. As for getting people listening to Jazz, actually I reckon you've done a pretty good job of suggesting some great artists - I don't expect for a second people go running off to listen to my playlists when I suggest them, but hey, it doesn't really matter in the scheme of things.
 4.
Reaper. £25 instead of £370 for Logic, and it seems to be as fully featured. Amazing!
Yes sir, plus the one million! It truly is an awesome DAW and in some cases offers functionality that the other more expensive (and mentally frustrating) apps simply can not. Install and run the whole application from a USB key anyone? Yes, thank you very much! 2nd place goes to Guitar Pro 6 3rd place goes to Toontrack's Superior 2 drums. oh wait.. ummm... Ampeg SVX by IK Multimedia is an awesome plug in for your DAW. Hmmm.. and for ease of use - Line 6 USB Audio interfaces featuring the POD hardware, such as the GX, UX1,UX2, UX8 etc - recording demos has never been so easy!
 5. I've answered based on the kinda stuff I have bought and sold most. However, I don't have a specific budget, it'd depend on the item I wanted or was selling. Some items have been expensive, but obviously pedals and accessories have been much less. I do like scouring the For Sale forums just for fun - It's like window shopping - looking at gear, seeing what it's worth and who has interesting stuff to pour over. Yes, it's a really bad place to go if you suffer from G.A.S and BassChat on the whole has ruined my bank account more than once! ha ha! Mainly, I buy because I need something and BassChat is the best place to find it. I sell because I either don't need it or I need a few pennies for an upgrade or change of equipment. I don't think I'd ever profited from a sell - I'd be a rubbish business man as I'm far too honest lol! but I feel that BassChatters mostly have offered really good deals to the readership and I've had a few items for great prices!
 6. Yep, switching from finger style to slap can produced a more pronounced top end and less perceived bass - I usually just reach for the bass control on my instrument and notch it up a little bit for slap then back down for fingers. The same goes for my picking technique that has an attacking tone.
 7. Well, I was expecting edition 67 to be out around the 25th May - but subscribers have been getting there copies already. Maybe they'll hit the shops a little earlier.
 8. [selfless and completely modest advertising mode] Hi everyone! Grab the June edition of Bass Guitar Magazine - I'm in the magazine having a good ramble on about Shuker Bass! - YAY! When I started writing the piece I notched up a good 3000 words, needless to say, not all of my content could be used ha ha! I hope you all reading about my experiences! Dan
 9.
Only a 7 string? I always said Dood was narrow minded...
Ha ha ha!!! ;o)
 10.
Actually no. Firstly it's entirely subjective. Secondly it will depend on whole load of other factors including how long the B the lasts in relation to the C7 chord and how many octaves the B is from the C and Bb in the chord, what the timbres of the instruments playing the C, Bb and B notes are. Theory will only get you so far. Your ears have to do the rest.
Heh! Made my post redundant - I like your description better! lol!
 11.
But,if you play a B over a C7 chord ... -it'll sound bad.
Unless it's 'Djent' - and then it's a beautiful noise!
 12. I too have enjoyed viewing the survey too, but I found that I could have done with a selection in between the choices. I chose: "I can read a bit and I find it useful & I know some theory and I wish I knew a lot more" but really wanted to say: "I can read well and find it very useful" and "I use theory a lot & enjoy learning more as I progress as a musician." I'm not daft enough to suggest that I was an expert at music theory! ha ha. I certainly believe that as a musician, you never stop learning.I mean, I have an excellent understanding for the level I am at - but it may pale in comparison to some of you guys on here who really know your sh*t!! A really good thread!
 13.
Oh well, i'm in last months copy !
BassChat take over BGM! - Muuuuutineeeeeeeeeee!! ha ha ha
 14. And there was me waiting a couple of days to make an announcement ha ha ha!! - Right, well - best I get to it then!
 15. My Shuker 7 string!!
 16.
- Triumph Dolomite Sprint
What a cooooool car!! My Dad had two of 'em when I was a wee lad. Completely nothing to do with the thread, but that car needed pointing out!
 17.
Acme Low B2 is exactly that.
Yeah, it really is. really!
 18. I have a couple of Shuker Basses (have owned a 3rd as well) so I'll be happy to chip in. Answers ***'d below.
Thanks for all the responses guys; in answer to a few questions:
1. I am considering getting one made without have played one, but I will be being very specific about what I want, in terms of measurements, neck profile, etc etc. Only because I don't get up to the North very much anymore, despite having grown up in that area. I'm planning to order one then if I like it I may order another :-) *** If you know exactly what you want with respect to neck carve and dimensions then you are definitely heading in the right direction. A custom bass can be anything you want it to be, but you have to communicate that with the Luthier so they fully understand what your exact needs are. I think experience with playing lots of different basses is more important than 'playing a particular custom Shuker' - because each Shuker *could* be so different from each other. Some may pick up my bass and hate it because of the close string spacing - but for me it's something I cant live without - it's a very personal thing for sure. 2. I'm very happy with my current basses but am now playing 5 strings almost exclusively. What I'm planning to order (first) is a semi hollow fretless P bass with Dimarzio P + Graphtech Ghost pickups so I can get both a double bass-ish sound and a classic fretless P sound. I was originally going to order a Status Electro having been a Status fan for a long time but they're not building them at the moment and their new model is unlikely to be ready this year. Having heard good things about Jon I thought I priced some options up with him and it will actually be cheaper and quicker to get something that is exactly built to my specs. Is virtually impossible to find some thing similar off the peg - closest I've come is a SpectorCore but they all seem to be lined fretlesses, and seem massively overpriced in the UK. *** True - Sometimes, I think Jon is absolutely crazy. I should ignore the prices on his website, cos generally speaking he WAY undercharges people for the quality of his work. That's not just being biased, I've heard it time and time again from Shuker owners. I like your idea about the fretless and Jon's Artist basses are just lovely! 3. I don't intend to ever sell a custom order bass, but then I never intended to sell some of my other basses - my 2nd Status was a custom order and I'm now selling that as it's a 4 string. As I can't predict the future (yet) I need to at least consider resale value. The sensible part of me says "buy something off the peg just in case (and probably second hand to start with)" whereas another part of me says "get what the hell you want". Also, shifting the existing custom order bass makes me feel like I deserve to have another in its place. *** G.A.S!!! We all suffer! It's crazy, I could justify what car to buy in an instant, but when it comes to 'if I should allow myself to spend XYZ on a piece of Bass gear' I probably anguish over it for days!! - I think if you do your homework and you know exactly what you want, then take the plunge. - I knew that my two were going to be 'for life' so as an extra measure, I've engineered enough personal stuff in to them to give them a really low resale value - so it'd be stupid to get rid of them anyway - but then, if you could be me, playing my basses, you'd know they're keepers ;o) YAY! 4. Shuker prices seem to be relatively reasonable when compared with other manufacturers *** In comparison to those he's rubbing shoulders with in the industry, his prices are very reasonable - Sometimes I wonder if that sends an message to those who are not familiar with Shuker basses that he's 'not as good' as the more expensive Luthiers because he's cheaper? - Well, one thing is for sure, deciding to not base himself in London means his overheads are a lot lower! So I think his prices are about lesser costs to him, not a lesser quality for us. 5. I've hankered after a few custom ideas based on Fender basses - Fender's custom shop prices are completely unjustifiable so if I can get the look I'm after for a third of the price then it makes sense to do so. *** Simon Rix and JJ Burnell seem to be over the moon with their Shuker takes on that 'P bass classic' - and to be fair, they could have probably gotten a free one from Fender rather than buy from Jon which speaks volumes in my book.
 19.
Who are you again?
"I'm the one on the left.. errrr 20th on the left, 30 rows back, tall one with black trainers.. oh wait, you can't see my trainers. Ah, I was facing away at the time too.. but ya know, if you could see me, I would have been in the picture, honest ..it's me..."
 20. Hey everyone! You may (or may not) remember that I was interviewed for the online mag 'Bass Musician Magazine' back in November (Ok, may not remember, so here's the link to that so you can have a good giggle at the silly faces I pull in front of a camera) http://bassmusicianmagazine.com/2010/11/bi...-bass%E2%80%9D/ Well - my good friend 'Biscuit' has just completed part 2 of an article about the London Bass Guitar Show. Annnnnd well, I'm all pleased cos the dear fellow has name-checked yours truly and I feel all special ;o) So here's the link - grab yaself a cuppa and settle back for a good read! 21. Fredde! That's absolutely brilliant and will be a very helpful tool to tab out songs really quickly. I'd love to see a six string version in the future - but I think this version already on its own is great!
 22.
Nice one dood. I'll give it a go at the next practice session. Cheers
Ey! No wurries, happy to help! Dooooooooooooooood
 23.
Sortabump!?? Just noticed an oscillating whistle coming through the speakers connected to my LH500 when I was not playing. Very strange. Could it be bad juice going to the head from the power outlet?
ok, plug your bass straight in to the EFFECTS RETURN on the back of the amp (Start with the bass volume all the way down and turn it up gently) Have a play through and see if the oscillating has gone away. By plugging in to the return socket you are plugging directly in to the power amplifier section of the amp and bypassing the preamp. I suggest this as it will allow you to get an idea if it's a preamp problem, such as a 'microphonic valve'. If the noise stops when you plug in to the poweramp then you have possibly isolated the cause. Given that I can't hear the noise this would be be initial thought. Should you need to replace the valve, it's a 12AX7 (otherwise known as an ECC83) and my personal preference for a budget but good quality preamp valve is the JJ ECC83S that can be picked up for 7-10 quid.
 24. Ha ha!! I didn't even look to see who was selling it! I just assumed you'd spotted in on the 'bay ha ha ha!!
 25. blimey! a thread from 2007! ;o)
