My foray in to Bass started I'm sure like many others - I plyaed guitar first, because I didn't really know much about the Bass guitar when I was aged 8 or so - but I soon discovered the low end and I'd began on Bass in earnest around age 12 and had my first Bass guitar aged 13. I never stopped playing guitar as well and we had a pinao in the house too. It wasn't long before my brother took up drums so I had that to fiddle on at times too! Later on I played lead guitar in a local metal band for 6 years or so, whilst my Bass took a back seat. Feeling the call of the low end whilst experiencing the demise of said band, I moved to full time ERBs and have been there ever since. I have guitars that I play all the time and keys in the house as well. I think it's very important for a bass player to have an understanding of other instruments too, especially to play some drums!

Been a big fan of Ampeg SVX for quite sometime - so 3.5 being free is great news. Good work IK Multimedia!

A fantastic endorsement Andy! - My old rack rig was a wash of compressors and effects and all sorts of gubbins. Any doubts I had about the LH1000 were very quickly quashed when I turned up at the first rehearsal with it and my two Hydrive cabs. I ran it absolutely clean with no drive or anything but still I had everything I wanted from the head alone. I'm amazed that unlike other manufacturers, Hartke have chosen not to put a ridiculous price tag on a tried and tested valve preamp - but instead crammed a very powerful power amplifier in the same box as well! I think the only upgrade I may be tempted by would be the Hartke Kilo when it comes out in August - but even then, I think it'll only be a GAS attack as I don't think I actually *need* the other functions to get a great sound, it's there already! If anyone has a GAS attack and an LH head comes up for sale - get one, they really are impressive!

Hey Blind Pilot! - As much as the above EQ / Compression advice will help to accentuate harmonics - the first place to start is working acoustically with the bass to get those harmonics ringing out loudly. New strings, preferably roundwound - and brighter sounding the better is very helpful. As suggested in a post above, if you pluck closer to the bridge along the length of the string, the tension is higher and thus you can pluck harder, which in turn will give you a louder note. However, your left hand technique I guess is counter intuitive - whilst you want as much volume from as little string movement on your right hand (picking harder) - your left hand technique needs to be a bit more delicate. You only need to touch the harmonic node on the string lightly - and for most people remove the left hand finger as soon as you have plucked the note - though as you become more skilled at only touching the node, it's possible to leave your finger on it longer without killing the note too much - which is great for harmonic arpeggios. Spend time locating the exact point on the string that the pad of your finger produces the clearest note. Remember, you only have to move a few millimetres each side of that point and you could kill the harmonic altogether. You've probably already discovered that over the top of the 4th 5th 7th 9th and 12th frets and their related frets an octave above the harmonics are easy to get to ring out. Make up a little exercise for playing as many of these in a little tune or something to get used to the change of position and still maintain a good strong harmonic sound - again acoustically. Then when you are happy that they sound good see what effect plugging in to an amp has. It all starts in the fingers - You may find that your gear (especially if it's just a 15" speaker for example) will have a hard time produce loud harmonics as the top end roll off will not accommodate those high frequencies. He was interested in what I have to offer as a Bass Player and we started the 'gears in motion' shortly after. I am happy for Mike to come back and publicly reply on this thread so that both sides are heard and hope that this situation can be resolved by both parties amicably. I do not want to see the thread get out of hand - as it will just get locked / deleted. I would prefer that the problem is resolved via PM and for both parties to come back and say that everything is resolved happily.

Here's one fabricated for a 10" cone - it uses a secret recipe alloy!

Drummers use metal click pads on their bass drum skins to add more definition and attack to the sound of the drum. I'm selling some discs that you glue to your Bass speakers that improve tone and definition. Mine have holes in the middle to let the high frequencies through. Sold in packs of 4 (for a 4x10) for £10. Wait a moment whilst I upload a picture...

I'm not a fan of the cabinets *ducks before I get something chucked at me* but the amps are great sounding. It's just down to personal taste for me though as anyone who has been watching my gear journey will attest!
