I measured the pocket last night and im getting it at 67mm
Wow! That's quote a variation between basses isn't it? - I guess I'm less worried about having to get the exact body if the likelihood is that they vary so much. Kinda bizarre as I assumed that if they were machine made en masse, then they'd be closer in tolerances. Maybe having made in different years and possibly by different factories would account for that. Looking at the cost of a donor body may mean this little project is shelved until next year now. At least I have the neck I particularly wanted! I think it's unlikely that a matching PB70 body will come up any time soon anyway!
Not EMG,s they are way too glassy for a jazz bass imo
I have to say I do like that glassy sound, but if you install the passive tone control too and wind it back a bit you can get right back to vintage warm. Guy Pratt's Jazz is loaded with EMGs and is a great example I like the Nordstrand Singles too and if Aguilar's offering sounds as good as their DCB pickups then those would be cool to try out in a Jazz.

Yes to the above but you will want to still make sure your rack case is allowing enough air circulation via vents too.
If you can stand the ghastly colour, the project bass that Karlfer has just posted in the basses for sale column might do you - if the standard pocket is smaller than the 62RI it would be easy enough to find someone to rout out a bigger pocket. Isn't Andrew Guyton just down the road from you? :-)
Thank you once again! I hadn't spotted the project bass - and you know, I actually quite like the colour! For my planned project it'd possibly end up being stripped back for a natural finish, but that said, I like a bit of an eye catching body! Indeed Andy is just down the road and I've been meaning to pop in and see him for ages! I think adjusting a neck pocket would be as you say a simple task. I suppose this way I can look to save some money as the donor neck ended up caning me with regard to import costs! OUCH! - I did get the neck I was specifically looking for though. There's a few 'no name' bodies on eBay too, so with regard to getting a body to be worked on, then more options are available. I suppose I just wanted to be able to drop my neck on a ready made body and off I go.. but then, there's that whole 'money I don't have' thing. At least this little project is occupying my mind rather than day to day demons lol.
You're welcome Dood, if there's anything else you'd like me to measure just let me know.
I think that's the main dimensions I wanted to check - though I wasn't expecting there to be such a difference between two PB70's - I have however had a reply from a company making bodies that know about the 'reissue' width being larger, so it won't be a problem as such. Ideally picking up a PB RI body that is going spare that has already been finished will hopefully mean less of an outlay verses having a body made, sprayed and finished. - Though it throws in some doubt if the neck pockets are quite variable. It could then mean just getting a standard (non-Fender) body and still having work done to make the neck fit.
My PB70US neck is 62.9mm at the 20th fret and 60mm between the 15th and 16 frets where it exits the neck pocket. I am not sure about taking the neck off but body thickness minus body depth under the pocket is 15.6mm. hope this helps! Mine has a slim neck measuring 38.5mm at the nut, spacing between the g and e strings is 30mm.
This is very helpful indeed! Thank you!

A quick measure up and my donor neck appears to be 64.2mm which is wider than a standard Fender neck pocket? I understand this is due to it being a reissue neck. So, another question I have is whether or not other CIJ/MIJ neck pockets are the same size for reissue basses. For example PB62, PB57. Anyone know?
As a PB70 owner myself if I can help out with any measurements or owt give me a shout
WOW! Thank you That would be brilliant! I can measure the neck for the width I suppose, but if it's not too much trouble I'd like to know what the pocket depth is on the PB70 which I assume would be the same across all PB70 models (ie PB70-US etc) I owned a PB70-US before that I was in a position that sadly it left my flock, but I couldn't afford to buy it back if I tried right now. I miss it! So I have a new neck, time to mate it to a body! I have nearly all the hardware I need here already to get the basss up and running, then I can swap out bits as I go along. The body of course is the bit I don't have!

I'm doing a bit of investigating! I'm planning a bit of a P Bass project, however I know that sometimes I can be a bit impatient. It would seem logical to just have a bass body made to spec, but I was wondering if the readership knew, for sure, of an off the shelf (possibly finished) body made by a company that wouldn't need faffing with in order to get this neck to perfectly fit. I know that some Fender neck pockets are slightly different sizes and wanted to not have too much messing around to get a perfect fit for my new neck. I could scour the internet and hopefully find a PB70 body, but I don't hold out much luck for something that won't cost me silly money even though it would of course fit perfectly! Looking forward to your thoughts! Dooooood

Shallow 4u ABS rack case
Dood posted a topic in Accessories & Other Musically Related Items For Sale
It's a Gator case like this one: https://www.thomann....gator_gr_4s.htm I know that I will need it in the future, but I really do need to clear out the cupboards! It's in good nick, £50 delivered (mainland, possibly extra for over seas?). The only thing regarding shipping is that I don't have a box to put it in, so it will be sent as is with the doors fixed with cable ties. Or of course you can collect for a discount! -
I've enjoyed the band's approach and I'm a sucker for melody stuff. I was reading that just the other day there had been issues in camp Summit; the bassist and other guitarist have been in a situation where they've been forced to leave the band?

I use the Novation LaunchKey and am able to map my controller keys to my DAW and thus yes there are occasions that it has helped with workflow. The transport controls are useful. That said, as soon as I started using a remote control app on my ipad (e.g Logic has an remote app) I haven't used the LaunchKey keys as much. They are accurate on my unit and anything the helps workflow has got to be a good thing.

Best D class amp for my P bass ... please read on it's more complicated!
Dood replied to Mr Fudge's topic in Amps and Cabs
Before you change anything - where are your cabinets pointing? Are they flat on the floor stacked pointing at your knees when you play? Get them angled up so that they are either pointing towards your ears or stack them on something taller so they are closer to your head. You won't need to crank the amp so hard so that it bumps in to compression land and you'll hear yourself more clearly. If you are relying on this set up as your bass sound, maybe worth getting the PA to assist then dial in a sound on the amp to hear yourself clearly rather than please the punters out front The AE cabs are capable of a clean sound so once the PA has taken care of your big 'out front' sound you won't need so much low end from your backline (meaning it will be easier to make out notes) -
It has been said before and I will say it again. That whistling after a gig is ear damage, permanent damage. You wake up next morning and it's gone, but the next rehearsal it's back. That's not the same damage, that's yet more on top. Hearing damage is cumulative and one day waking up, the whistle won't have gone. You may even have more than one whistle, white noise or even a low level hum that sounds like someon sat outside with a car engine running. Get proper moulded ear plugs. I use 64 Audio filtered plugs personally as well as their line of moulded in-ear monitors, because I already know what hearing damage feels like. Don't put it off, just stick it on the credit card or something!

Trace Elliot did do the BFC that had a fifteen and four tens in one box. The four ten inch speakers were split in to 'left and 'right' thus operating in stereo whilst the 15" speaker received bi-amped lows from the matching Trace head. Tecamp did the Bad Cab that had all sorts of cones in it: 15's,12's,10's and a pair of tweeters.

Fret size and fingerboard radius for low action
Dood replied to tedmanzie's topic in General Discussion
One of the reasons that Guitarists suggest that a flatter radius can give you a lower action is because the more rounded a fretboard is, the more likely that string bends will choke off. If I string bend a tone or more on my vintage bass, you can as good as say goodbye to the note. My 7 string, which I believe has a 20" radius, well you can bend all day without choking a bass string. For the vintage radius, one way to endeavour to get round that is to raise the action some more - thus, a flatter radius can be set up for a lower action if you are in to your Dave Gilmour m3rd bends! -
I wonder if Leo tried the reversed position in early prototypes?
My Fender Power Jazz Bass Specials from the 80's have reversed P's. Japanese made and absolutely stunning instruments (well, after my upgrades anyway!)
I love the sound of a bass but am increasingly finding it difficult to practice my bass playing. It is the lack of melody content in the bass that is the problem. Bass is essential in a band situation but how do you practice songs, songs that only feature root G, C and D notes? Even if it is more challenging than that, it is still hard to practice. All suggestions and advice welcomed. Thanks.
Although it may seem like a really obvious answer, I'd say seek out an enthusiastic bass teacher who can help inspire you as well as get you on your way with playing!

I will add photographs later: Here's an opportunity to get a full set of Japan PJ Pickups, TBX tone control and the unique (I suppose) tone system that came with these basses. The Preamp takes a 9V battery which powers a two position control active filter which isn't as far as I know a million miles from that used by Wal/ACG? Don't quote me on that but this is a very cool system that allows a huge range of tones available. I will mark the cables with what connects to what and I am pretty sure I have a set of those very rare JBS knobs to go on the kit as well that I will include! Dead easy to install, but you will need a soldering iron or a friend who can do it for you! The PJ pickups have had the pole pieces cleaned and protected from any further wear later as well as a new set of official Fender covers. I also have a second set of PJ pickups that I will sell too and then possibly another PJBS preamplifier. Price includes delivery to the mainland, extra will be needed to cover the cost of shipping elsewhere.
