1. 1969 Precision, but that truss nut looks like it's disappeared up,the neck, maybe a spacer would sort it out... http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=292072875731&globalID=EBAY-GB
2. Africa by the meters, such a cool bass line for just the one nite
3. I quite like that, wouldn't spend that much on it, but it looks pretty cool, although maybe a little uncomfortable
4. Currently on our 5th drummer, all the other members of the band have remained the same. Each drummer has always come with their own list of issues, current one is a great drummer, great voice, but no transport which is normally a must for a drummer! The drum kit is spread out among the rest of the band to transport to gigs!
5.
You need to get on with the drummer and live near him or her. Drummers always drive.
Our drummer doesn't drive! And whilst it is a pain in the a**.....he's bloody good so accommodate.
6.
I really like the angle of cut on the edge bevel (if you know what I mean) so many of the aftermarket guards just don't show enough of the white under ply, I love the look of those original basses with the tort guards with that distinct white edge
I'd not noticed until you said, but yes it is a very "deep" angled cut, far deeper than the Fender reissue.
7. Beautiful bass, I'm guessing a 66 would just miss out on a Brazilian Rosewood board?
8. Good bass at a decent price, I'd want photos of pots, pick ups, neck heal and cavity to be sure, but looks very nice indeed.
9. I find set up with TI flats particularly troublesome, almost not enough tension to get the relief I want even with the truss fully loosened off, great sounding string though.
10. You can't beat some good flats on a P bass, Chromes and Fender flats are a reasonable price and won't let you down, mid to high tension. TI flats are a beautifull string, smooth and low tension, if a little pricey, lots of mids and really cut through, some people love them, some people find them just too floppy! I love the sound but just too low tension for me. Pyramid golds are a quality string, but a little dark sounding for my liking. If you want a compromise between round and flats you could go for GHS compressors which are round wound strings which funnily enough have been compressed! (I quite like these) Never tried any of the Ernie Ball flats so can't comment on them. I'm currently playing La Bella deep talking FS flats, quite expensive and a high tension, but great feel and lovely deep tones. If you wanted a little less tension you could go for the FT set. I tend to go for 105 gauge and find anything less a little too "dainty" under the fingers, but thats very much a personal thing. Hope this helps
11.
Looks really amazing Chris, nice variant choice too I'm sure you have already, but just in case..... is that original guard screwed into some wood right now? They can shrink very, very quickly indeed.
Yes, she's nicely screwed down to a good piece of ply
12. My Spitfire Precision pickguard arrived today, its a speckled 60s burgandy with a light relic and looks rather splendid. My idea was to alternate every few months between the original mint and the Spitfire tort on my 64 Precision, but I think the original may be spending quite a while screwed to a piece of ply! Mark individually makes these to order, and whilst a little expensive, they are beautifully crafted and look amazing. It took him about a week to make and fits like a glove, he kept me well informed about his progress and sent me some photos through when finished. The only down side is the UK import tax from the US which seems a little on the high side! 13. Maybe I should have found out the answer to this question before now as I've playing for 20 years.. Anyway I've never quite worked out the purpose of an effects loop, I only use a few effects, and at the moment use the Tech 21 fly bass rig, however I have always just inserted effects into the signal path between bass guitar and amp, I've never used the effects loop, am I missing something? Does the effects loop have any advantages im unaware of?
14. When I get some good quality photos up I'd be interested to see the comparison.
15.
Ohh... my God, that is fantastic, even by Mark's standards. It looks exactly like a genuine 60s tort guard. It's even got the thin black pinstripe layer!! I could lose myself in that all day long! Nice work! Oh no... what would that look like on my fiesta red Road Worn P?? by which I mean, oh no, Spitfire GAS!! Bad!! You're right, we need another thread for all this! Nice big hi-res pics of it on your bass when poss, please!
New thread as soon as it arrives (after I've paid the xxxxing import tax...)
16.
Oh, that's ok - I like a nice bit of tort too! (Can't you tell!)
You asked for it! These are the photos Mark from Spitfires taken of it, im hoping it will be delivered to me early next week, it's going to go on my Fiesta red 64 Precision to give me a bit of an alternative the the original mint, I shall keep swapping them over when I get bored! I shall start my own thread when it arrives and stop hijacking this one! 17.
Well mate, the Boogie is my ex, and it's the only current combo you'll get that gets close to the B-15. And you know I'd have the B-15 back if you really pushed me
The only problem with the B-15 is gigging with it, and I don't mean the volume because that's not the issue, it's not the easiest thing to transport, and I'm always very conscious about it getting the tiniest of knocks, it's so beautiful, I'm definately very tempted to swap for a Mesa.....or two.....
18. Keep thinking about getting one of these and this looks georgeous, I'd have to get rid of my B-15 though...... Consider me tempted, where abouts are you?
19.
Unless it was Spitfire tort I doubt it would be much like 60s tort. Sorry, I have a bit of a thing about it.
My incoming Spitfire tort Precision pickguard has just touched down at Heathrow, UPS should be delivering any day! Can't wait, the photos look beautiful.
20. That is beautiful, I have a 64 Precision, although it's had a body and neck refin, but what a bass....64 is a great year for pre CBS Febers.
21.
Excuse my ignorance but what makes them (Spitfire) so expensive compared to general ones? Does he have to catch the tortoise or something?
Other than not looking like a slice of salami, Mark individually hand makes these over in the states to your personal preference, whilst I love tort, all modern tort all looks a bit naff to me, and if you can find a decent vintage tort, you're looking at at twice the price of this.
22. Marks just finished this and will be posting it to me today, he's sent me photos of the finished article, looks beautiful to me. 23. You just gotta love a red head, great value as these were the muts nuts when these came out, and still are!
