1. Last question re: shielding, I've done both and all looks good so far. Is it OK to put some electrical tape on the inside of the control cavity on top of the copper tape around where the jack is situated? Just in case the jack moves and comes into contact with the sides to prevent shorting??
2. I just ordered one of these, should be arriving sometime next week. They look pretty smart and seem to get some good feedback, I like the fact that you just charge them up and they'll give you 4/5 hours, no batteries or additional power supply to mess about with and are tiny. I don't know much about latency figures but 6ms seems pretty low and people don't seem to notice any difference with cables. Not for use with active circuits though! I got the black version as I thought it looks less obtrusive, I shall update once it arrives. http://www.xviveaudio.com/productInfo.asp?id=298
3. I only play precisions but use the knob locking screw as my "marker" which I have at about 5 o'clock when on full, I tend to have the tone rolled more forward than back so can always see where it is that way
4.
there is no magic cure to fix the pots may be it would be best to replace the loom and keep the original pots while they are still in working order kiogan is the man to speak to contact cleaner is only a short term fix I'm afraid the internals of your pots are probably worn
Would rather not replace them, but if needs must I will consider it, any suggestions for replacement loom?
5. The test will be when I next go to rehearsal, I never seem to have a problem at home but it always buzzes or picks up the radio when rehearsing, I'm guess they have some dodgy wiring! Any tips on stopping these old pots from seizing up from time to time? Contact cleaning frees them up pretty quick but would rather it never happened at all!
6. All done and working wonderfully, I had the same problem as last time to start with when I put it back together, no sound! I moved the jack around to make sure it didn't touch the side and it worked great As luck would have it though, as soon as I put it back together the tone pot stuck solid, a bit of contact spray has sorted it now though, I'm hoping that the lovely clean copper control cavity will help prevent the pots sticking in future,it would be rather annoying mid gig! Thanks for all your help, I wouldn't have given it another go without it. Now to do the same on my 73 Precision
7. OK, I may have time to have a go at it later, I'm sure i shall encounter a problem or two so will be back!
8. OK, step one is to screen the pick up cavity. Step two screen the control cavity Step three, join the two cavities with a wire through the pickup wire hole This is how far I got last time and got nothing when I put it back together, but worked OK when the metal pick up shield was off, what am I missing? There is also a metal plate under the pick ups with a ground wire back to one of the pots...
9. Well this is how my Precision is wired up, just the one wire from the jack and earth to tone pot, idiots guide appreciated, don't assume I know anything!!
10. I have some brand new and unopened fender flats, 045 - 100 which I'd like to trade for either fender, or chromes 105
11. OK, hopefully I should get round to this next week, I shall let you know how I get on, thanks for the advise
12. OK, so removing the pots, and I'm guessing jack from the circuit would do the job?
13.
No need really to remove the sheet just copper tape the cavity the metal sheet on the pickguard is shielding anyway
I'm probably being a bit thick, but it was when I put the pickguard back that the metal sheet came into contact with the copper from the cavity causing the short
14. The copper wasn't touching a pot, but it was touching the metal full size metal sheet which runs under the entire pick-guard which I'm guessing in turn would be touching the pots as they go through it! Would that mean I'd either have to remove the metal sheet from under the pickguard or make sure the copper shield doesn't touch it?
15. It's a 1964 Precision which I had a go at shielding some time ago but gave up, I shielded both cavities with copper tape with just a small amount overlapping onto the face of the body and linked both cavities with a wire, the problem was that whenever I put it back together the pick ups went dead! It has an entire metal sheet under the pick guard and whenever this touched the copper shielding which overlapped onto the body the pick ups went dead, remove the pickguard and the pick ups came back to life...was i doing something wrong? I shall give it another go if I can figure out what I did wrong before...
16. I've been picking up some local radio on one of my vintage Precisions, should I look at shielding the cavities or are there any other options?
17. Used to use schaller but don't like how it pushes the strap away from the body slightly, makes the guitar feel different somehow, I've now started using Fender strap blocks which I much prefer, and they don't change the feel of the instrument.
18. I have quite a few sets of used strings and I could do with something better to store them in than the old packaging, any ideas?
19. Cracking amps these, often think I'd not sold mine and kept hold of it, but gas being gas...
20. Oh go on, my 64 Precision with her new Spitfire pickguard
21. I keep our PA in the garage, nowhere else for it to go but been OK so far.
22. There may still be the old shape knocking about unsold, but I believe they have stopped making them now. I bought a California TT just before they changed shape but just never got on with it so sold it, don't know why, but some basses you just don't gel with..
23. It's the new body shape vs old body shape, the old shape being the more traditional Fender, not sure the date they started doing the new shape but think it was mid 2016
