1. I've had a three-piece ash neck (with a beech body) in one of my first basses. Ash necks are somewhat popular in custom Foderas and MTDs too. On mine, the neck was really light and the body rather heavy, so strapped it stayed in whatever position I wanted it to. Soundwise - not sure. The bass sounded rather dark with lots and lots of sustain, the darkness might have been down to the pickups though - they were kinda handmade no-name Ps (two of them).
2. If he can pronounce "pushchair", he can pronounce "Maruszczyk" too.
3. Oh, I'm buying a Chowny for sure (was one of those who tried). Not in the next couple of weeks, mind, as moving houses across the country is the main concern currently, but one of those transparent flamed denim blue long-scales is in my near future A red one too, if you ever start making fretlesses.
4. How Leo would feel about what? Spector Coda?
5. it was my fourth time in a row. Had brief chats with some of you - Bluejay, NickD, SiBob, noticed Seashell, Lozz, Greek, BillyApple in the crowds but couldn't really talk anymore as throat infection mixed with trying to shout over the noise left me voiceless by 3pm on Sat. I loved Chowny basses, Peavey MiniMax amp, Dingwall D-bird, that Marleaux fretless, that Mayones fretless and much more! Fun as always.
6. ebony fretboards (don't have one in any of my 4 basses now, mind) large tuners - don't trust the little Gotoh style ones, for no good reason probably significantly rolled-off fingerboard edges brass nuts d-tuners quick-release bridges flamed and/or quartersawn maple necks gloss finish on the neck and body exposed polepieces on the pickups those polepieces flush with the enclosures or hex-key-adjustable
7. just buying the tickets. So the "advance" ticket is £5 cheaper than on the door, but then there is a service charge of £5.96 for me having to print it myself and for them not needing to hire a person behind the counter who would do it for me. Makes sense. Not a rant against LBGS, rather against the whole ticket selling industry, it happens pretty much every time I book anything online. What is that service charge exactly? Just some extra profit that conveniently isn't displayed until later on in the buying process? Anyways, see you guys tomorrow (and Sunday). edit: it also asks me about my date of birth, and it's selectable from a calendar, but dates from the second half of the month are not clickable. So I lied and made myself a couple of weeks older!
8. I know of a slightly used 5-string vintage white with tort (has a black one as well) Elwood for sale (not mine and not a basschat user either, please remove this post if it's breaking any rules), but it's the standard 34" scale. Quite pretty though, kinda '66-ish, painted headstock, lollypop tuners, dot&bound fretboard.
9. Lee Sklar seems to like his double reverse P bass. I personally think it should be that way. Had two Yamahas BB300 (not at the same time, but used them with the same kind of strings and same amplification), older one with reversed P and a newer one with the standard Fender-like orientation. And yes, the reversed one sounded more balanced, there was more beef to the D and G strings, one could play licks high up the neck without jumping out of the groove, sonically. Now I have a fretless BB350 with a reversed P (and a J at the bridge) and I love how full and woody those thinner strings sounds, never had that with a "standard" fretless P. Also, my BB415 keeps me thinking how much tighter the B string would sound if I reversed the P coils or even just moved the B/E/A coil to the other side of the D/G one.
10. Those Squire basses are as good (or better) as most of their Fendre counterparts.
11.
Don't think Michael is on the Euro dates bud Si
looks like you're right - it was clearly stated that he was when I was buying my tickets (few months ago, admittedly) and I new saw it explicitly denied otherwise, but pics from Bill's last night gig show another bassist. Not a complaint, I'm still a big fan of Bill's music. Sorry for derailing the thread then!
12. Yeah, I thought Michael League would be realistic as he will be actually touring the UK at the time and having the weekend off BTW, I'm going to his (well, Bill Laurance's) gig at Ronnie's on Monday after LBGS, anyone else?
13. Happy to hear that. Question - might be answered on the website somewhere... What's the frequency of the deliveries? Monthly? Weekly? Fortnightly? How do you get charged? Nothing happened to my account yet, and it never said explicitly when and/or how much I would be charged initially and what happens then. Thanks
14.
Elaine & I will be on hand to answer any D'Addario related enquiries. Come and see us on stand D12 to try out NYXL Bass.
I'll be there and will make sure to say hello and "thank you" - only recently put the set of Chromes you gave me at one of the BC Bashes on my Yamaha BB (just had to source the B string as the bass is a fiver) and I'm totally hooked! Also, I won a set of tapewounds (and my usual Pro-Steels, which will have to wait as I was well stocked already) plus some merchandise in Wunjo's giveaway - put the nylons on my fretless, and again, I'm in love. On another note, Snarky Puppy's Michael League plays in Dublin on the 11th, then has two days off, and then at Ronnies 14-16th.... Would someone know what numbers to call to get him to the show?
15. Cool enough. I ordered anyway, thought there would be one more screen to review before confirming, but everything went through. Oh well
16. yeah I found it! It says the extra £2 is payable for 35 issues, so still good value even if the player is not exactly of Rega quality.
17. does this turntable look like Rega RP1 to anyone else too? Also, the website says you can have it with 4th delivery for an extra £2 per issue, but I don't see any option to choose in the order form edit One more thing: does anybody know if there is a possibility that these issues are not permitted to be played in public places, for example cafes etc?
18. I might have to bail out too - seems like by that time I'll already be living in a rather far-away part of the country, and while I still intend to come if I can, I may not be able to.
19. I know both Wunjo and Bass Gallery have early (dot&bound) 66 Jazzes (one each afaik) right now, might be worth it to ask.
20. wow, that "walnut" version with ebony board and gold hardware is my dream. Still, I wish the pickups were reversed. I have this crazy idea of having a Maruszczyk made in this style.
