1. I think BRX hit the nail on the head. If you can play the music you need to play, then you are good enough. Sure, it`s always nice to feel as if you are improving as a player but I wouldn`t get hung up about it. And remember, Pino can`t read music.
2. Be careful if you are thinking of putting a Jazz neck on 51 body as the neck pocket on these is usually squared off and a P or Jazz neck is curved at the end. Of course you may just be using this as an example, in this case ignore me The Allparts stuff is expensive but is licenced by Fender and is good stuff. If you are on a budget, there is a guy on E bay who sells Mighty Mite necks, licenced by Fender, with a Fender logo for around the £100 mark.
3. Yeah, he used the Steinberger on this record. He started using it due to it`s size and the fact that it had no headstock, which made it a lot easier to play all those bloomin keyboards at the time. He stopped using it as he wasn`t happy with the bottom end he was getting from it. The same excuse he used when changing from his Ric. The Wal wasn`t used until he played Peter Collin`s Wal when they went back to record in the UK. Good album.
4. Two one time Ric players are Geddy and Bruce Foxton - who both switched to Fenders as they couldn`t get the desired bottom end from their Ric`s. So you are not alone in not being able to get the sound you are looking for.
5. Roger (or Davids?) bass parts serve the songs. Guy is a better bass player, of that there is no doubt, but I would say that Rog is a songwriter who happens to play bass. If you watch the Wall shows, he plays a lot of accoustic guitar and G E Smith plays most of the bass parts. But Pigs and the Animals record in general, is a great piece of work. Here is a rig run down of the guys involved in the Wall tour, Dave Kilminster, Snowy White and G E Smith. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7s1x-JjZu2I&feature=share&list=PL13D7650D1E3388E9
6. It was fitted to the guitar to stop it slipping, whilst it was balanced on your thigh, when playing sitting down.
7. Love the colour but you seem to go through more basses than me
8. I think the price of a Mex Standard is hard to justify when the quality of the CV Jazz is so good out the box. And the new Modern player satin Jazz, mmmmmm. The upgrade to your Squier sounds like a decent bit of cash if you are buying the parts new. Having said that, if you love the Squier, I would go for it. Anything that makes you happier playing the bass.
9. My brother is wanting rid of a set of the above home hi fi speakers. These are high quality, well made, a few years old but are in good nick and work perfectly. They are brown/black in colour and are approx 18 jnch tall. They would have to be collected from Paisley, no postage as he hasn`t got the time/are a fair weight/nothing to wrap them in. Even though they are free, a donation to the site would be appreciated. I think they look like the ones in the pic but as I haven`t seen them for a while, I cant be 100%. He is needing to get shot of them asap.
10. I love the way the bass and drums lock in with each other
11. If it was a vintage Fender, that would be "mojo" and thus, the price goes up!! It a crazy world.....
12. I saw them at the Glasgow Appollo in about 84 and they were loud and completely over the top, sticking swords in the stage at the end of the gig. There was a clip on Ya Tube where Joey and the manager were at an outdoor gig on the continent somewhere and they were testing the pa. It was only putting out something like 140 db and their contract states that the pa must put out something mental like 145 db and unless the pa was upgraded, they were not going to do the gig! That`s what you call real men. Or people who are really deaf.
13. I had one in sunburst that I bought as I was playing in an acdc tribute band at the time.Good build quality, nice finish and sounded like a Stingray. The thing is though, if you are buying it brand new, you can get a s/h US Stingray for a few quid more.
14. I live in a tenement flat and use a 25 watt Marshall to play through and my upstairs neighbour can hear me playing it sometimes. Unless you insulate the room, there is no way to stop bass frequencies travelling next door. I have now bought a TC BG250 and use the mp3 input and headphone sockets and everyone is happy.
15. They are the coolest bass bar none but as said above, they ain`t for everyone. I have owned a few and love the look but can`t get on with the way they hang on me.
16. I like the look of the new satin finished ones. It seems a lot of bass for £364 and the 4 position switch looks cool. I wouldn`t worry about the fact that it`s made in China. You don`t hear many complaints about the CV model.
17. Don`t you people know? All heavy metal programs go to episode 11!! Most only go to 10 but this one goes to 11!
18.
Will it be open on Saturday mornings?
Yeah but only between 9 am to 12.15. Can I be Cheggers?
19. Very nice looking. Those tuners look really good in black. I have a set on my Jap P bass and they look good against the maple.
20. They are really good basses,. Thoman has some decent prices on the m 2000 http://www.thomann.de/gb/search.html?gf=misc_4_string_basses&bf=g-l&oa=pra
21.
I blame the drummer, too. Because it really is his fault.
Always the way!! Mark. What brand of guitar do you play? Some people like to stick to what they know and already use. If I had your budget and was looking to buy new, you can`t go wrong with a Yamaha BB, P and J pickup, good build quality and will do anything you ask of it. The neck is nice and slim and comfortable. If you are looking s/h, your best bet is to scan the classified ads on here. For your budget you will get a good selection of Yams, Ibanez, Fenders etc. If you need further info on a purchase, this is the best place as everyone on here has an opinion.
22.
True but to be fair , given the audience barely reached double figures, they weren't asked.
Ah well. Don`t say I didn`t warn you Donny
23. I`m an experianced biker and the thought of going down the road with a bass strapped to my back is a rather large no no. Riding a 125 when you have just passed your CBT (and assuming you have little or no experiance riding a bike) is scary enough without the bass being on your back. Please trust me on this. Much better to get a small car and do your car test if you don`t already have it. (Sorry if I`m wrong about your riding experiance). But regarding a DI box, for £35 ish, the BD 121 can`t be beat and I never gig or rehearse without it being in the bag just in case,.
24. I tried it a one gig a couple of years ago. I plugged into my Sansamp, used a Wharfdale powered monitor and put the sound through the pa. But I found that the sound from the amp was what I missed. I imagine that with good monitors, a good pa and a sound guy, it would be cool. But there was a good covers band that gigged around my area that had what I mentioned above and the guitar and bass sound was always crap. The drums sounded good though. There is another thought. If you have to drag a decent monitor around with you, would you not be better having a lightweight bass amp?
25. Here we go..... Current: Fender P bass Frankenstein, Yam RBX 374, Pawn Shop Mustang. And previous in no particular order...
