I may need a great cheap Jazz bass. MIM 70's classic Jazz.?
timhiggins replied to bubinga5's topic in Bass Guitars
I've had fender mim 70's jazz ,squier vmj ,and sire v7 and i think if you want an active jazz you cant beat the v7 if i was going for the passive option i would probably go for the 70's vmj over the 70's classic mim fender as there is very little in it i.m.o unless of course the headstock bothers you -

I have used ampeg 8x10 sealed cabs for reggae when they are supplied as backline on festival stages and they sound great personally i opt for seperate 1x15's so that i can have one or two depending on how much volume is required.

Loopers seems ok to me as it will still be all about the bass but anything else would just seem to move into composition territory and therefore may as well enter the comp. challenge . For me its the bass and drums that have the most symbiotic relationship and therefore if we are going to allow anything else then i would opt for drums personally ...having said that i shall still take part in whatever format the noodle bar takes, although it will probably be just a bass noodle from me

I tried one a few months back and loved it ,and it seemed about the same [ body and neck ] as my usa standard p bass if i remember rightly i dont think you can go to far wrong for the money.

Ineffective tone control - passive bass
timhiggins replied to Grangur's topic in Repairs and Technical
This may sound silly but are they really old dead strings as i have had bass's where the tone control seemed to do next to nothing until i changed strings and then they come alive ! -
Will you pay my travel expenses [ hypothetically ]

It seems a good idea to me as it takes no time and only requires a few minutes to listen and vote.

Noel Gallagher doesn't like Jazz Music.
timhiggins replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
It's all scouse banter and should be treated as such. I like the guy. For the record, Jazz doesn't like Noel Gallagher either.
...I suspect Bilbo knows he's from Grimsby ! -
^ Even with all the licenses, you can't ignore stray RF that is beyond your control. Of course, I'm not saying this happened... just trying to say what *could* have happened... and why Mariah doesn't deserve the panning that she seems to be unjustifiably getting. Hell, I'm not even particularly a Mariah fan... but theres too many numbskulls with no idea about the technicalities of such a show to judge her on that performance. It's clear that her performance is dogged with technical issues, not her ability to sing or not.
Bloody experts coming on here with informed logical hypothesis and technical knowledge ruining a perfectly good witch hunt ....i'm getting deja vu !!
The veneer has no real structural strength at all. If you chambered from the top, you would need to cover it - a bit like a control chamber cover - and then veneer over that. It is probably how we will tackle this one. I'll be doing a thread on the progress so you'll be able to see how it all pans out. Quite often, on projects like this, decisions need to be made on the hoof, so it will be interesting how close the final method is to the present thoughts.
Ah of course...makes perfect sense now ...i'm looking forward to watching this progress ,that grain in the red finish will look amazing !
Hi, Harry Guitar and bass builds and mods is my hobby and I like doing veneer jobs because of the sheer transformation you can get for not much outlay. I'm presently doing some trials with different varnishes, etc so more than happy to quote you on a veneer job if you are happy to be a 'guinea pig'. If you are OK with some of the veneers I have in the loft, we can probably do a deal that gets close to your budget. Ref the weight, I suspect the body is plywood - it tends to be very heavy! Very feasible to get some wood out of it - and the tone is not likely to be affected at all (there are a lot of myths around on the topic). Drop me a PM if that's of any interest. Andy p.s. - these are a few of the veneer jobs I've done: This recent one is plywood (there's a thread in the Build Diaries)...nothing wrong with plywood: ...and this is also plywood (but probably couldn't do a deal on this type of thing ): This is my own Squier VM bass:
Lovely work very impressive,as a matter of interest does the veneer have to be thickened [backed] when adding to a chambered bass or is it stable enough with the 0.6mm top ?

J Retro with Kent Armstrong Soapbars ?
timhiggins replied to timhiggins's topic in Repairs and Technical
Cheers Peter I hadnt thought of asking the man himself .. -
I have a custom made high quality bitsa with 2 old kent armstrong soapbar pickups however the pre amp is the highest output pre i've ever come across [ it has a very high passive output let alone active ] it is also an extremely sensitive eq and not very user friendly, what i am thinking of doing is installing a J Retro pre i have ...does anyone know if this will be compatible ?
You know, when I hear people say things like "not enough restraint", it reminds me of "Teacher Leave The Kids Alone"... where poor British schoolchildren are beaten and cajoled by their masters into not moving their hands and not speaking - until told to speak... upon fear of having to bend over and get a damn good paddling. Outside of Britain, this "restraint" mantra does not exist. Remember that this bulletin board receives international membership. Perhaps the comment should have been paraphrased with a disclaimer? And I don't hear where it lacks in taste... or maturity. This is a gospel service where emotional expression is part of the belief. Some cultures are very repressive, and members of such regimes should be aware that perhaps they are projecting a troubled upbringing onto normal people, that is, non-members of their sub-group. I don't understand the pre-occupation with restraint. We don't live in China, do we? This is the Western World. One must not forget that the country from which this video was taken worships self-expression. Even though one has the freedom of artistic criticism, it doesn't mean that everyone else has to accept it. Perhaps discretion is a lost art. And for the record, I'd like the video musician to know that most people find his playing to be tasteful, mature... and totally unrestrained.
+1 some folks just have no soul
