  1. From a very small sample set, they really don't seem very reliable things do they! Now I remember why I tend to avoid valve amplifiers
  2. Do they? I don't know. There are many reasons that something breaks down, QC certainly has an impact, as does cheaper / poorer assembly. That makes sense, it would make it vary more but not necessarily make it more unreliable. obviously a 1% metal film resistor costs quite a bit more than a 5% resistor, and it would affect the frequency response or gain in an amplifier for instance (assuming it was out - there is no reason a 5% resistor actually has to be more out than a 1%, its just more likely), but not the reliability of it. Cheap construction, bad wiring, poor switchgear etc, they can have an effect, but on a circuit board with low current components, there isn't much to break.
  3. Is it obvious they use cheaper components? Case, yes sure, but you know, capacitors, integrates circuits, resistors etc only have a few Chinese sources and there is very little difference in the prices. They might be assembled in different places or have flashier offices, but I seriously doubt there is much of a difference in components
  4. They are, I looked yesterday - but sadly the shipping is pretty high!
  5. Yes. ie - they are exactly what you ask for. Mine is the same as an ibanez 5 string, as that is what it is measured from. I suspect most are a lot bigger, depending on what you want.
  6. Ok, not bass but the Roli Rise 25 (thought I would try it before the 49). Completely amazing. If this had come out when I was a teenager I would have never stopped playing Keys
  7. My neck is flame, no angle, no string tree
  8. I would be looking for another band to fill my time, join one, if they are good stick with doing stuff with them, and if this band want you and you are free, go out with them, if not, don't. Its fine to be a hired hand rather than a member of the band but in that case it should be up to you if you are available.
  9. Maybe they don't hate it, maybe it is just like background music to them? I mean music is very common and everywhere, it isn't something you have to seek out now, as you used to. It has less value.
  10. No, mine came as a normal flat head unfortunately, would have preferred a tilt, didn't know it was an option!
  11. For me 15mm spacing would be standard size and everything is too large! Can't remember how big the fireman is (notices I am sitting in the same room...) yeh - 64mm. I am very interested in how it comes out as I would like to do a 5 string P on a 4 string neck, currently my painting isn't going well on the P body
  12. They do look close. thats why i have been looking for narrower bridges for when I do my P bass. I know they exist, I have had basses with them. I had a cheap noname base that I bought in the late 70s that had a 15mm bridge, and so does the sterling Sub ray 35. Except that one had one of those odd round based bridges so I couldn't really use that (except maybe with a hacksaw).
  13. Thanks - that is really informative. I got some planes but know nothing about them, haven't used any for many years since school. Probably explains why they don't really seem to work!
  14. Yep, I am always complaining about our band doing 3
  15. It's really easy to misread that!
  16. Would love a moderne, liked it the first time I saw it. Basically a flying V you can sit down with. But I don't really play the guitar any more so not really worth it. Probably wouldn't buy another guitar unless a firebird VII came along cheap Hmm.. moderne bass, I wonder how that would work out?
  17. The moderne is here: https://www.zzounds.com/item--GIBDSMDA19 Firbird is here. https://www.zzounds.com/item--GIBDSFB119 Don't want a moderne, don't want a moderne, don't want a moderne.....
  18. Isn't that gibsons problem though (not their current financial useless CEO problem, but the other one). I played a firebird X, it played fine, it was quite a nice guitar to play. I am sure there are people who love them. I had a darkfire which was another of the heavily critisized models, it was great. Actually, it wasn't great, the electronics were stinky poo and it was badly put together, but it was a good guitar (and the piezo volume was inspired). The Explorer and flying V were disasters when they were brought out, noone wanted them. Basically most guitarists are completely neophobic. If it hasn't been around for at least 20-30 years they are not interested. Bassists seem a bit better but still there is very much a 'what type of bass do you play, a P or a J'. Agreed that gibson shouldn't go for complex electronics (as they are terrible at it), but they should certainly experiment. However, when you have a CEO who makes the rules and wont' accept discussions, you are never going to have a good range.
  19. People say they are until they come up with something else and then they rant about why aren't they just doing les Pauls and SGs. As you see from above, people even get upset if they do them in other colours. Or a bike company?
  20. I would say so. White thunderbirds aren't that rare, and generally go for that sort of price, in average condition for the year. A neck break normally reduces the price, even if it isn't all the way though (and it is hard to say on a painted one how bad it is). Sometimes though if you are prepared to wait you can find the buyer for stuff.
  21. Somewhere with the overplaying at different times there is a slightly less bad song!
  22. Always had good drummers. Was quite a shock when I went for an audition in a band and their drummer was just lifeless.
  23. Our UPS deliveries are very good where we are, haven't had a problem with their shipping, we just don't really deal with them any more as our area driver was a racist so my wife refuses to deal with him.
