  1. On another note drummers are getting a pasting in this thread lol.
  2. I would say bad sound quality is, more than volume. Btw in what I say I'm not saying the Op's sound quality was possibly bad in anyway. I'm just answering the volume question from my own point of view as a punter. Last band I seen in a small setting they sounded excellent despite having a lot of power at there disposal for such a small stage, marshal all valve half stack. 4x10 mb cab and mb amp, Big drums, big pa. I like loud music and thought they were appropriate despite not being overly loud at all, i could still order a drink. Had great sound all round. The band I seen before that also a 3 piece. Again a small venue but not the same place admittedly. Were a good band but sound quality wasn't great and vocals hardly heard. They had smaller pieces of equipment that i felt were appropriate for the venue and were probably the same volume as the first band. But the lower sound clarity made the volume seem much louder or not as tolerable. I could still order a drink. Again I liked the band and talent wasn't an issue. The band said the pa wasn't loud enough. But then why turn up the amps to there limit (which can't ever help tone quality with smaller equipment) and play louder??? Surely (Don't call me Shirley) playing a touch lower than the pa would of been appropriate. And they probably would of nearly been as loud anyhow. The band I seen before the other two were in a tiny venue. And just as loud as the other two bands, infact a touch louder. There equipment was very modest in size. And they had even better sound quality than the 2 bands above. I could just about order a pint. But because of the clarity the volume wasn't as in your face and was pleasant. So to me volume isn't an issue, it's the quality that sometimes is. Thankfully it does seem sound quality is getting better. I'm not saying older or small equipment is bad as I've heard great bands with all vintage stuff and great bands with very very modest equipment, but I certainly think things have moved forward and not in volume.
  3. See that's a reasonable enough price.
  4. This was my assessment of the Rumble 100 too.
  5. I like Tony Butler and these basses are supposed to be decent enough. Your right though it's a bit pricey, although they will listen to offers. The high price might just be a sales tactic.
  6. Just as a thought yes the new Rumbles are indeed lightweight, they look very nice too. Pretty loud also. However I suggest trying the different versions. I played through both a 200 and 500 in store and thought they were great. So I bought the 100 which I never tried first. Typically i didn't like it compared to the others, maybe it was the lack of tweeter and the smaller cab voicing it differently. It wasn't terrible, just I feel the larger versions were better sounding, more definition. Of course tone is in the ear of the beholder. I heard one of the new Blackstar unity bass combo amps recently. They seemed pretty decent. Seemed more comprehensive than a rumble. Bit more pricey compared to the equivalent Rumble model though. They have them in pmt newcastle to try. I think they were lightweight also.
  7. I would love a squire/epiphone, type Rik thing. Or maybe even something on the lines of the old USA musicman sub line, if they want to keep it truly in house. I actually think it would be a very good money maker for them. Although it would have to be reasonably priced, maybe around the traditional mim (or whatever it's called now) range.
  8. Good work. I remember reading the original thread and thinking it could probably be sorted. Using a little heat is a good idea. If it was a really bad twist I might of been tempted to use a little steam too, from the rear of the neck (sparingly). Boiled linseed or lemon oil on the fret board before unclamping too. Might help, but can't hurt even if it doesn't.
  9. If i did have to pick one it would be Heard it through the grapevine. However here are a few of my other favs. I've tried not to pick ones that come up commonly. First up Damaged goods by Gang of four. Always thought the bass had a certain edge to it. 2nd is Uncertain smile by the excellent TheThe. A pretty good example of a simple baseline with a nice rounded tone.
  10. Very nice! Think you made the right decision on colour. Dare I say natural looking ash finishes to me can look a little dated. Classic black looks alot fresher and has a certain classy look.
  11. Well I suppose practice does make perfect 😀.
  12. In the last pic in Toms original post (pic 4). You can get an idea of the depth. Where the end of the truss rod acts is directly below where there is two breaks vertical and horizontal as seen from above in pic 3. I think its fairly thin there. It looked like the truss rod contributed to the break when the shock happened. If you take off a very small amount from the entire circumference of the neck, including the frets and roll the board. It will feel much slimmer. Rather than say slimming it down from the back maybe. I just feel around the neck area is a weak point and 1.5mm might be too much.
  13. Well those were work in progress pics. I think it turned out a little better in the end. But considering the break was not just one clean snap and had multiple places that needed attention I was pleased. Especially as the break was right over where the truss rod acts! If it was a painted or heavily lacquered finish the repair would be completely invisible. Anyhow glad I could help. And get a very good action to boot.
  14. That depends on if you'd prefer the SR shape or not. I've not had enough experience with Cort's own models to say there better than similar proced Ibanez models although I have seen two Cort basses with tottally broken truss rods.
  15. Discovered Talking heads in my teens, in the mid to late 90s. Found some old cassettes belonging to my mam. Liked the artwork on the Little creatures album and thought would give it a go. I wore that tape out. They always had great lyrics and a interesting sound. And as already mentioned in the thread Tina Weymouth is a underrated bass player.
  16. A used sr500 is a very good buy imo. Ones in good condition can go for less than half price of a new one, I bought one last year for the price of a sr300. Speaking of which the sr300 feels nice and the electrics are ok but nothing special. Good choice if you like a very slim neck. The lower to mid range Ibanez models don't seem to be very fashionable at all, despite them being decent instruments. And they have poor resale value compared to alot of other brands. Shame really.
  17. Here is exactly what could be under there. These are the poplar sub bodies from the usa factory, taken in 2004. Note the different coloured wood one at the top. That's not one half stained or anything that's literally two very different shades together. The rest in the pile are not great either. This was one of the cost saving measures along with the textured finish that didn't need much finishing work (if any), and the non mm stamped bridge and the use of ping non branded tuners which are the company that make the mm stamped grover tuners. Unfortunately the cost cutting measures didn't work and they had to stop production of that bass.
  18. Im not sure but if ordering online who knows which one you will get. Be lucky if online they update pics too or know which is which. As said the one I tried was not the updated version and it was brand new, in a very well known store and online store. The published fix I've read helps but doesn't fully resolve the issue it's more a work around. There's something wrong when you buy a bass and have to fix it right away, they new about the issue for years. For the non knowledgeable up to date buyer I think it was a poor show. Especially when the ray34 is a decent quality instrument.
  19. There ok (ray4). Never tried the ray24 but there supposed to be much better like the ray34 is. Was thinking of getting the ray24 myself at one point as prefer a thinner neck. They have much improved hardware etc from the ray 4's very budget hardware. Shops are still selling the older hot pickup basses though. I tried one very recently. And you don't know if you will get the new pre one if you buy new online. So for the people thinking of getting one best maybe to hold off till the new headstock design ones are in stock, unless you can go try one in store.
  20. We are talking about the a different bass. In this case the USA made Ernie ball Musicman sub basses. Which were made with USA electrics from the sr classic and in the same factory. What you bought was a Sterling sub ray4 which is cheaper far east made bass. Which don't share any parts from the usa stingrays. There a decent budget bass although the hot pickup issue put me off them. Musicman has a stupid naming system! There's usa sterling basses. And there is the company Sterling (far eastern made). There different things altogether.
  21. No there definitely poplar it's a fairly well know spec. Basswood is used on the bongos I believe.
  22. May I ask what pre amp have you chosen?
