  1. Ernie Balls are very good strings, I like them on basses and also their Earthwood strings on acoustic 6 string guitars.
  2. Very impressed with last years 'New', so much so I got it on CD, cool bass on clever tracks like 'Appreciate' and 'Road', there's a hidden track too.
  3. Saturday I heard a great lovers rock tune. 'I Do' by Ijahman Levi and Madge Sutherland. Don't know how I missed it. Been playing it everyday since then. Spotify have the album but the vocals are very essy.
  4. Subtlety, expressiveness, touch dynamics. Can it be soft and clean for one song then rasping, thumpy and klangy for the next? The bass responds naturally to how you want to sound.
  5. When tennis players were teenagers, did they stand in front of their bedroom mirror with a guitar in their hand, imagining walking out onto the grass Wimbledon, and wishing it was a racket?
  6. Needs a horn section playing over the rising riff to get really Northern. Oh and vibes of course...
  7. What BRX said. Got a compliment on my basstone at rehearsal last night. Bass boosted and treble rolled right off. Bloody awful like a muffled tuba but just right for a cover of Blur's Parklife.
  8. This thread seems bizarre to me. A moment ago I was marking up the final set list for Friday's gig. Each song is allocated vintage or modern depending which use the BDI21 pedal for Ampeg-esque boom'n'bloom. Some songs get a mids-boost for a more P-bass sound. A couple get bass boosted and the mids dropped. That's it. Getting roughly the right sound helps me imbue the song with the right feel. Why the obsession with right equipment? Do I need to haul a double-bass on stage to cover the Cure's 'Love Cats'? I get a clean sound, increase mids and play with plenty of plunk'n'thunk. Seems to work for the band and the audience dances like crazy. All this tone chasing through specific gear would seem to be saying 'I can't trust my self to listen to a track's bass and eq to a close equivalent, instead I shall buy the exact same setup'. Rather expensive in an eclectic covers band like mine. Silly too. Listen to the track, emulate the playing, get close enough, relax and have fun.
  9. Suddenly I See - K T Tunstall Ignore her band videos, the studio recording is confirmed Rick clank.
  10. What's with the Deadhead bass? More knobs than can possibly of use and then a bridge anchor that is made from dribbled solder...
  11. Ah there's my problem, piano is something I left in childhood as I could never coordinate both hands. String instruments suit me much better. Keys players have my respect but I can't make chord hand and bass hand work myself...
  12. I was amazed to see a Lemmy Rickenbacker in there, all that carving would be hard to replicate, but a quick Google image search showed they'd simply ripped off a common picture of the real thing...
  13. Hi Mastrivan, this bass in great condition, the finish is near perfect apart from the fingerprint sized mark on the top bout. It's close to being new as it was never my main player.
  14. The Phantom body is a fututistic masterpiece. The headstock lets it down. It should have echoed the body colour and shape.

Plastic bag is unusual. Sounds like a measure to stop the board touching wires, pots in the cavity. Pop sounds like an unwanted contact being made or broken. I'd get the solders checked for bad/loose joints, particularly earths.
  16. My question is how does he handle the mistake? Does he quickly get back on track or does he continue ploughing on with the wrong line? Is he listening to the rest of the band or is he following his memory of the original recording? Does he get his guitar lines from online tab? May be a case of slavishly learning a sequence not really understanding how the song bolts together...
