1.
What are those then ?
All the things that get removed. The ash tray, the pickup cover, the finger rest and the bbot bridge. For Jaco and NWR the scratch plate. The neck pocket and bolts are often extended and added to on reinterpretations. The neck needs to be stiffer hence graphite rods, stringers and status graphite neck replacements. That last one would be key to my ultimate jazz.
2. Elbow - terrible name, sublime music.
3. Good call Bill, Golden Vanity was first collected by Samuel Pepys in 1667. Sir Walter Raleigh didn't write it but is name-checked in versions of the song!
4. Jungle Rock was a hit in 1974 because it was used for the TV coverage of the Ali/Foreman fight, the 'Rumble In The Jungle'.
5. Would like to have an act make it up the charts with Greensleeves. Anyone got Kanye's number?
6. Great contributions Myke I had forgotten those two. Sting as the creepy lodger 😜
7. Oh, just thought of the Beach Boys 'Lady Lynda' which steals it's intro from Bach's 'Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring' written 1716/1724.
8. I'm wondering what the oldest song to be revived as a contemporary hit is. A quick google search brought up this; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxlste3JucU Now if the (ahem) exuberant Hank Green becomes an YouTube sensation, then the Seikilos Epitaph would be the oldest revived song at 2000 years old. He's just shy of half a million views at the moment. My next thought was Black Betty. This is a work chant turned into a heavy rock hit by the Ram Jam Band and lately by Oz metal outfit Spiderbait. (It even featured in the trailers for 'the Voice' this year). Recorded versions go back to 1934 but as a march chant it could be 18th Century. Then we have 'Falling In Love With You' by Elvis Presley, lately revived reggae style by UB40. This derives form 'Plaisir D'Amour' written by Jean-Paul-Egide Martini in 1784. Different lyrics and a middle 8 but it's recognisable the same tune. Hmm. since I typed that I just watched this; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLYgXm8s3p4 Maybe Andre Rieu's authentic revival shows there isn't that much similarity Can anyone suggest other songs that keep coming back?
9. Had this happen to my Spear S2 but the tuners always struck me as cheap. Replaced them all with Gotohs and I'm pretty sure the tone/feel has improved 😀
10. 'Have You Seen Your Mother Baby' and 'Mother's Little Helper' were recorded on a slightly fast tape machine, so when mastered came out slightly slow. Only the recent CD reissues corrected this. There now seems to be an absurd claim in some corners of the Internet that all the original stones CDs are wrong speed 😑
11. There are plenty of examples of hit records that are slightly sharp or flat. Sometimes this was band tuning to piano/keyboard, sometimes it was due to tape speed adjustment either deliberate or accidental. It's possible that slightly increased tape speed gives a more dynamic feel but I'm not sure a song is a hit due to sharpened pitch. All academic these days as tracks can be tweaked in tempo while keeping the key the same. If I came over as intolerant earlier then it was my BS detector overloading. Arguments based on the innate rightness of past times or the superiority/uniqueness of particular cultures/nations do that to me 😈
12. What a load of b*ll*cks this A432 business really is. Standard pitch is a modern concern based around accurate measures of pitch. In Verdi's time music was prone to pitch creep. Orchestra's would gradually tune sharper and sharper because it gave an impression of louder, more gripping music. Over the decades this got so bad that string players found the necks of their instruments bowing and their gut strings snapped! Mythical golden age, typical Nazi tripe, ha!
13. Thanks for that Krysh, never realised the Aural Enhancer control was so sophisticated. I always used to think of it as 'a 'finger noise' control for the slappin' crowd. However over the years I've come to appreciate that in the mix fretting sounds are a good, percussive thing not something to be compressed away.
14. If your amp has a Presence or similar upper treble control (my SWR is labelled 'Aural Enhancer') turn it up and concentrate on clean, expressive playing. By the same token if you always dial in compression ease it off.

16. Clearly an indication they are getting out of the bass business! Quick, time to panic buy Precisions like there was no tomorrow 😜
17. I've a feeling this is one of those questions that needs to be split down into various types of active and passive. Just as some passive tone controls quickly introduce a muddy tone and some have useable sounds all round the dial there's a wide range of active circuits. With actives part of the question is whether the frequency points at which the controls cut and boost match your mental idea of where a bass sound matters. If you play in a band with one consistent genre then you're likely to only need one bass tone but in a covers/function band you'll be switching styles rapidly between songs. Active allows you to tweak quickly without turning back to the amp, which is often shoved somewhere less than accessible.
18. I'm wondering if we're in reshaped Watkins/Wilson/WEM territory here. Maybe with one lost pickup and the remaining one relocated to the ahem 'sweet spot'...
19. Check the jack sockets on both the bass and amp are tight and clean.
20. 'Some People Are Crazy' by John Martyn. Jazzy line that is tough even without all the ornamentations. Not sure if it's an anticipated backbeat but I know I'm making the beat and the drummer is following along...
21. For me it had to be Oopsdabassist's Steampunk. Great design that would have me GASing like crazy if I saw it in a shop. 😛
22. Lets not forget the women. For me Etta James is Queen of the Blues. Irma Thomas is superb and when Nina Simone does a blues it gives me tingles. I even have a soft spot for Big Mama Thornton and Big Maybelle.
23. Shame, the BE album was excellent. Maybe Hurricane #1 will reform...
