1. Thanks JTUK. Unfortunately neither manual gives any set up advice with regards to levels which surprised me. Previous gear ive had from Mackie and Yamaha always suggest how to balance the levels and gains. I have just never had 5 level dials to deal with before between mic and speaker
2. Now my band have our own vocal PA I am looking after the levels of the mics for me and the guitarist as we share vocals. Within the mixer and the active speakers there are 5 gain/volumes to deal with and I want to ensure I am getting the best out of the PA but not sure which ones I should be increasing more than others. Its only a basic alto mixer and has a gain dial at top of the channel and then a level dial at the bottom of the channel. It also then has a master level for the whole mixer. Then on our EV Zlxp12s its has an input level on the XLR input and a master level to increase the Db level from zero to 10. I know on the gain of the mixer i should turn it up till it just clips then back off but on the other 4 level dials I am not sure which ones should be turned up and which ones should remain lower. Or is it a case of having them all at 12 oclock and adjust from there. I have tried playing about with them on stage but soundchecks are always a bit of a rush so any advice would really help. Thanks
3.
Apparently Geddy practices his basslines whilst reading a newspaper out loud,
Great idea!! Learn to sing, play bass and be informed of current affairs all at the same time. Cool
4. There is also the issue of peoples level of hearing being different from others so they not be turning up on purpose. The guitarist may have inferior hearing to the frequency he plays at
5. 2 x 60mins for us plus a handful of encores. I think I would struggle with anymore as I am knackered by the end of it. Then again all of our songs are quite up beat
6. Our guitarist uses a capo on 2 songs and tunes up afterwards but I dont see it as a problem, but then again he does do it rather quick. I am the front man to our band so use this time to have some banter with the audience
7. Like others have said you just have to sit back, relax and enjoy playing. You will find its the worrying about it that is part of the problem. At the first gig with my latest band I totally cocked up Modern World by The Jam and now a fair few gigs later its still my nemesis as I panic when playing it, even though I know it and its fairly easy. Used to be the same when I was a solo singer. If I ever forget the words to a song on stage it would take me ages to build the confidence to sing it again. Just don't be too hard on yourself
8. I think both versions are amazing and never quite sure why people dislike wasp's version. Only got into The Who in later years but have written some of the greatest songs around IMO
9. Yes I saw it a few months back and enjoyed it too. Its on you tube if anyone wants to watch it
10.
in our band we split the cash up with a set amount to each member and then the rest goes into the kitty, but we're a group consisting of 3 very close friends (the drummer was my best man and the guitarist/vocalist is my fishing and drinking buddy) the PA is spilit between us as and when we've managed to find stuff and had a few quid in our pockets. as far as our own kit goes everone buys their own stuff, our overheads are pretty low so no-one minds, we're in it for the sheer pleasure of getting a pub full of people dancing, any money that comes our way is a bonus. the band kitty is in an account in my name but that's only because i was the one who had time to go and open an account, the cash from our last gig is going to pay for the repairs to our guitarists amp, we had to almost force him to take the money as he's a bit skint at the moment (self employed gardener so seasonal cash flow) if he pays it back then that's great, if not then we don't care, having his amp working is the main thing. Matt
I think this is a good point. If a guitarists amp fails and he cant afford to buy a new one or have it repaired then the band cant gig. Therefore should the band step in to pay for a new amp from gig money?
11. Just to clarify our drummer has not asked for money for a new snare. I was just using that as an example piece of lowish value equipment
12. My covers band is doing really well now and I would be interested to know what everyone else does regarding band members individual gear. By this I mean do you take out costs of strings, drumsticks etc out of gig fees before its divided up? If so, where do you draw the line. For instance if our drummer needed a new snare then this would come out of fees but if me or the guitarist needed a new amp then this would cost a lot more. The added problem would be if the band did decide to buy my new amp then I would not own it if the band split up which would be difficult. Weve bought a PA and lighting between us but individual stuff is a bit more involved. Would be interested to hear others opinions.
13.
If you like the look of the Squier Classic Vibe Precision because of the maple neck, it may be worth checking out the Vintage Tony Butler Precision, which retails for around £200 new (link below). Would leave a good bit for an amp then, you`d certainly pick up a giggable amp for £280. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Vintage-Tony-Butler-Live-Guitar/dp/B008FPPU5M
+1 I have this bass and love it. Build quality is very good. With your amp are you looking at just bedroom use or are you planning to gig with it?
14. Not used either of them but lots of people like the SRMs but ive heard lots of critisms of the thumps
15.
Could still be worth buying rather than hiring - buy at £150, sell at £100, job done.
+1 For a one off street party, use them and sell them. They wont sound brilliant but would think at a world cup street party people wont be too fussed about the sound quality. For ongoing use the next step up would be the Alto range. Same specs but better quality all be it still in the budget bracket
16. Tried to do it but keeps saying an error has occurred. Will try later as we need to stop this from happening. Sick of music pubs closing down or becoming restaurants. Its hard enough to get gigs.
17. We open with wont get fooled again but as we have no keyboard player i have sampled the keyboard intro off the original track and have it playing on a continuous loop while we walk on and pick up the instruments. It was my idea and should work well in principal but our guitarist still feels the need to play a couple of other riffs before we are supposed to all come in
18. I used one as a solo singer and wasnt that impressed with sound. Very small speakers so sound was not very broad and nowhere near as loud as i was expecting. And like i say that was just as a vocal pa without any instruments going through it. Sold mine and now band i am in use EV zlx 12s. Same price and much better sound although you will need to buy a mixer.
19.
I sincerely hope you mean that you used proper speaker cables with 1/4" jack connectors, and didn't actually use instrument cables to hook up the cabs to your amp.
+1 Just because they are not Speakon connectors it does not mean they are instrument cables. You get both speaker cables and guitar cables with jacks on each end and you should not mix the two. It will tell you along the rubber sheath of the cable whether it is instrument or speaker. You must make sure you are using speaker cables to connect amp to speaker. Tha'ts probably why you are having the issues you are.
20. Check out JHS Vintage V4 P basses too. Very well made with Wilkinson pickups, and are only £200 brand new
21. I can still hit some top notes but for me after hitting 40 its the mid range I seem to have lost!
22. Enjoyed that. Thanks for sharing. Nice selection of genres too
23. I share the lead vocals in our band so play the correct bass lines when i am not singing and pretty much play root notes when I do sing. Huge respect to those that can do it. Some of Bruce Foxtons bass lines and harmonies are near impossible to do but he manages with ease.
24.
I think I have a new redish tort plate around here somewhere if you want it you can have it for nothing it may need a little dremelling to fit oh and it has 9 holes anyway if you want it and I can find it it is yours as long as you cover postage
Thats extremely kind and yes if you do find it i will happily pay postage. I assume it is a P bass scratchplate. Thanks again
