1. I would stick with your current set up as it will work fine. Don't pay too much attention to the watts as different manufacturers state different watt ratings. Just make sure you keep the ohm's correct which you are doing by having 2 x 8ohm cabs into an amp that can handle 4ohms. The pedal will not damage the amp or cabs in anyway so just have a play around to get the sound you want. As has been said before if you turn the amp up full, which you won't, thats the only time you will damage your gear and you will hear it doing so before any damage is done. I agree its a minefield though as it took me a while to get my head round ohms, watts and decibels
2. Agree with all of the above. Its a case of keep calling the pubs that say they will ring you back. The other option is going through an agency. Youd be paying commission but you would not have the hassle of getting the gigs and providing its a decent agent should be regular work
3. Thats a very good question. We dont have PL or PAT yet but we are looking into it. I always neatly tape down wires and put my guitar cases back in the car or well out of the way but our drummer sees no problem with leaving empty drum boxes all over the place resulting in lots of trip hazards
4. Definitely stick with the bass you have and learn to play it with the lessons you have. GAS is an incurable condition and if you spend £1000 on a bass you will still be looking for another one afterwards
5. Cool cheers I agree my wilkinson pickups are great. I just mentioned them as someone suggested the pups might be the problem. Im still intending on getting another BC212 when one hopefully comes up on here but I was just surprised how much clean boost in volume I got from the pedal
6. Few years ago there was a couple of pubs where they would pass a hat round after you had finished to tempt you to do a couple more songs. This works well as by then most people are drunk and more generous. I remember being paid 60 quid as a solo artist about 15 years ago. Then the hat went round for me to do 2 more songs and there was nearly 100 quid in the hat!!!
7. At almost every rehearsal we will have a 12bar jam which could go on for hours. I especially like playing the power chords up at 12th fret of bass as oppose to the walking bass line sometimes
8. Cool thanks guys Yes my bass is a jhs v4 and although great to play I am aware the wilkinson pickups are not top end We are not a particularly loud band but we do play in rather loud and rowdy pubs. But you have to expect that playing mod stuff
9. This may sound like a daft question but here goes I use a LH500 into one BC212 and am well aware this is not loud enough for a live band w/o PA support. I am currently saving for another BC212. However at last gig i started using my Hartke attack pedal, got a lovely sound that I wanted but was amazed at how much louder I was when I increased the level on the attack pedal leaving the LH500 at about 10 0 clock. So much so that I was easily heard in the mix. The amp wasn't clipping and no distortion from the cab but I am not sure if this is the best way to get heard in the mix. Am I doing any damage to amp or cab having the pedal on all the time at this high level?
10. I got sick of having old SH gear all the time and not getting a sound I liked, so have been saving for last few months to buy a new amp. Two months ago I bought a new LH500 head and last month bought a TC Elec BC212 with the intention of buying another BC212 next month to complete my rig. Now Andertons have just announced they are doing the buy one TC head and cab and get another cab free offer!!! Although I like my LH500 I would have considered getting the BH500 if it meant a free cab., so that's £260 I will out of pocket. Bloomin marvelous!! Sorry just wanted to rant
11.
The Super Bassman head is a replacement for the RH450 head. I just changed out the TC E 2X12 cabs for the Ampeg Heritage SVT-410HLF cab.
What have you done with the Bc212's?
12. I watched the bananarama one after too. Brought back all my boyhood memories of my crush on Siobhan Fahey. My god she was stunning!!
13.
I am a huge fan of the Squire VM range and have owned and gigged a natural jazz V for over three years now. Never had any issues with it and plays beautifully. In that time I've owned several other basses which I gig with for a while, but for some reason I just keep going back to the Squier. I had an impulse buy and picked one of the FSR 4 string models up the other month.
That is my perfect looking bass in terms of colour, neck and block inlays. Never been able to find a FSR available so think you were lucky to get one!
14. Not sure if I'm getting tighter as I get older, but I do find cab covers rather expensive for what they are so was thinking of making my own. I've have recently bought a TC BC212 brand new and inside the cardboard box were very robust cardboard v shaped edges down the 4 sides of the cab. My plan is, using these as an internal frame to then attach thick fabric round them to make a sleeve. I know with high end gear the price of a cab cover is minimal when it protects your investment but just wondered if anyone else has tried anything similar to avoid paying a lot for cab covers?
15. Yes i watched it too. I think Dare and Hysteria are two very important albums that shaped 80s pop music. First time I have seen Philip Oakey interviewed and was surprised how un-rock star he came across compared to the image he had. Very enjoyable
16. In an ideal world we would all play on nice stages in front of friendly crowds but simple fact is if you play pubs you have to accept there will be some idiots. Last saturday i had the opposite where some bloke thought i was wonderful and played air guitar about two inches from me most of the night. Regularly bumping into my mic stand causing the mic to keep smacking me in the mouth. I would rather be called a w****r any day
17.
Yep, love that cover version. Great song to play, though I`m sure I never did it properly.
I would love to try it in our band especially as we do mainly who and jam songs. Only problem is me and guitarist share lead vox and this song is more suited to my higher voice. I dont fancy trying to sing it and play that bass line at same time!
18. Ive owned the HA 300w and now have a LH500. As has already been said the LH is very simple to use but sounds lovely so I would opt for that one
19. Yes a great song. WASPs cover version isn't bad too
20. Practise is important but i think some bass lines are just too hard to play and sing at same time. In our band i sing lead vocals on some songs and backing on others. I tend to just play root notes while I sing then put the correct bass line in in-between when there is no vocals required.
21.
I use a pair of BC212s as well. They sound monster on their sides in a 2x2 config rather than the tall 1x4 config. Something about the speaker orientation just makes it sound full and awesome. Makes sense to get a matching 212 rather than a 210.
Yes i think youre right and am searching the web as we speak
22. Did my first gig with it on Saturday and was very impressed. I had tried it out previously in a shop but this was its first outing with my LH500 and in a pub setting. I was surprised with how much top end it achieved and found myself having to pull back on the LH500 highs to get the sound I wanted. Didnt have to use my attack pedal as I was more than happy with the sound I achieved. We play Mod covers so I like a nice punch with a fair bit of mid range. This is a very rowdy pub with lots of noise so I had my amp up louder than I would have preferred (12 o'clock) but I am under no illusions that one 212 is probably not loud enough for a loud pub so I drip fed some in to the PA to compensate. I was undecided as to whether to buy a 210 or 212 to go with it next month when I get paid, but after last Saturday I think i will definitely go for another 212. Other benefit was the weight at 19 kilos, I was able to carry it in to the gig with ease. Very happy so now on the look out for a good second hand BC212
23. I use 2 jhs vintages as my main gigging basses and cant fault quality. Good pickups and stay in tune for an eternity. One was 50 quid off ebay and other was 200 quid brand new.
24. I don't think they are as popular as they used to be. I remember 10+ years back doing a few and they were okay if it was a lunchtime. Some, however were late afternoon and usually spilled over into the evening so you would get the landlord trying to get you to play on into the night as more punters arrived. Would never do them now unless we had the Saturday night off before.
25. They have done this before!!
