1. I have always loved playing keep on running and although its the intro bit most people recognise, the verse and chrorus are just as enjoyable. Eaton rifles is another of my favourites
2. The only growling, burping and grunting I am familiar with is my wife in the morning
3. This thread has learnt me a lot but still unsure on what can be used and what cant. I have always assumed if my bass amp was to fail i could just play through the Pa from my active DI box through the line input on one of the channels of our small mixer. Some on this thread say this is not enough? Our mixer is a small yamaha MG10XU and as well as line ins it has 4 mic sockets. This is the type that accepts xlr or jack into the same socket. According to the manual these have preamps built into each channel so would I be better putting bass through one of them if i ever needed to and if so, with or without the DI box first. Sorry to hijack the thread
4. Has to be Battle of the planets https://youtu.be/acOnskcyrtA Keep asking the band if we can use it as our intro.
5. I had the Ha3000 and have now got the LH500. Great sounding and great build quality on both. I like to stick with an amp once i like it and i love the simplicity of the LH500. Thinking of getting a Ha 2500 or 3500 as a back up if i can find one second hand
6. Those adaptors dont work IMO as jack inputs arent much use for mics and guitars. I think you will have to get another mixer unless you link in another one as already suggested. We have 2 mixers in our band as i think its always best to have a spare anyway in case of breakages
7. Well its agreed that its in the set now so will have a few outings over the next few weeks. Will report back with any feedback!
8.
We don't play it - I love the song though.. Where does it mention rape?
Although it does not specifically mention rape in the lyrics I was concerned that after googling it, there are a large number of people who rightly or wrongly make connections to rape and the slave trade, hence my question as to has it caused offence.
9. I am not suggesting if we play it, people will assume we are support the content. I just wondered if anyone had had bad experiences playing it. I am not sure how comfortable I would be singing it if there were people in the audience who may get offended rightly or wrongly. Its interesting that some of the lyrics web sites have changed the words, most notably 'with the women' instead of 'whip the women'. Not sure if this is deliberate or not as they do get quite a few wrong in other songs
10. As my covers band already do a couple of rolling stones songs we decided to give brown sugar a try. All went home to learn it with me singing lead vox as well as bass and when we played it at rehearsal last week we absolutely nailed it. It really is a great song to play. However it was only when I was learning the lyrics I realised what a dark song it is (for some reason I thought it was about drugs). Does anyone else play it and could it cause offence? After googling it, it would appear some do find it a bit offensive. For anyone that doesnt know its about the black slaves on board a ship being raped so not exactly a light hearted song
11. I had a mullet when i was 16. My dad lined me up an interview for a job with a huge printing company that may have set me up for life but I turned it down because the MD insisted i get my haircut (he was the double of captain peacock). My dad went bonkers and 6 months later I cut it all off anyway when I realised I looked like a berk!!
12. Unfortunately this does happen and even more so if there is an agent involved too. I book the gigs for my band and always ring the venue a couple of days before to check now to avoid problems. With facebook being a popular way to advertise i always follow pubs facebook pages too to make sure they are advertising us.
13.
How do any of you folks find the TC heads for volume? I got a BC212 recently, and found it a bit on the quiet side when run at the same time as a couple of other 8 Ohm cabs I have. I noticed that TC say you can run THREE of their 8R cabs with their bass heads, but only two of anyone elses. You can't fool with electronics that much, so I did a DC resistance measurement, which came out noticeably higher on the BC212 than on any other cab I have; suggests to me that they're actually more like a 12R cab, hence the ability to run 3 at once. Just wondering how the heads have performed for any of you in real life rather than on paper.. the actual number of Watts is something of a technicality when it comes to sound.
If thats correct then that does concern me. I run Hartke LH500 (500w 4ohm) with a TC BC210 and TC BC212. From what you are saying I am not getting the full use of my amp. I thought the fact you can put 3 TC cabs with the TC head was to do with the head rather than the cabs.

15.
A boxer only knows how good he is when he fights outside his own town. My personal opinion is it is very easy to set up a circuit of pubs in your own back yard, but it can become a bit of a chore as you seem to exist in a time warpy / Ground Day environment. Also, unless the band constantly updates the set, the audience get over familiar with the same thing as they saw you do a mile down the road yhe previous weekend. Try and bang in a few new venues, and it is much more satisfying to have a new audience applauding for what you have done.... Just what I think....
We are lucky that the few pubs we are doing are fairly spread out so that there is no chance of people seeing us twice in a month unless they have travelled to see us. I would travel further as I quite like the calm drive home after but the rest of the band want to stay within a half hour drive. But thats another thread
16. Interesting to see what the feeling is on this. This year we are doing the same amount of gigs (2 a month is our agreed quota), but in less pubs. Therefore we are playing them more often. They are all nice pubs with good crowds so we are lucky that we dont play any dives. Some of these pubs have already block booked us for next year and asked us back more times so in 2016 we will hopefully do 24 gigs but only in 8 pubs spread out around the Midlands. I am really happy with this as we know where we are going and what to expect. Anyone else prefer this or is it better to keep going to new places to stop boredom factor. We can of course take new pubs on inbetween gigs if things crop up but we do like our Saturdays off too. I think Im just getting old and wanting everything in routine
17. Great cause so well done for doing that. Sounds great and looks like you had a lot of fun. Is there a reason why your female vocalist wasnt in the video much ?
18.
There really is no point in using subs for vocals. They are only providing reinforcement two octaves below any sound going into the mic. The only possible source of low frequency sound is from vibration through the floor and mic stand, handling noise or picking up sound from the drums and bass, all of which might muddy your vocal sound. Most mixers have a subsonic filter to keep these sounds out of the audio chain often at about 80Hz. Make sure these are switched on to keep energy sucking and unwanted noise from the PA. Similarly going for 15's isn't a solution, with just vocals the volume is determined by the mids and highs so more bass isn't going to make much difference. If anything you'll probably lose a little mid output and some dispersion so they'll be less loud and less clear. I'm staggered that the EV's are struggling, these are not inconsequential speakers and should be capable of going pretty loud. How loud is the rest of your band?! you'll have to spend a lot to get better than the EV's and you say money is tight. How do you know they are struggling? Do you venture out into the audience space to listen to the sound they are hearing? How do you run your vocal monitors? There are a couple of other things you could look at. Are the EV's DSP controlled and if so how is this set up? There may be some limiting circuitry which is cutting in to soon. How is your sound eq'd, a small boost to the mids might help punch through, or cut the bass and turn up, I know some of the EV's have different DSP settings for different types of music and venues so look to see if some of the other settings, if you have them, are more suitable. You could also look at using some vocal compression, this 'squashes' the sound cutting the peaks so you can bring up the average sound level without driving the PA into distortion. Compression may increase feedback problems though.
Thanks for the comprehensive reply Phil. Much appreciated. You are right that there are a lot of settings within the EVs and we probably have not had the time or knowledge to experiment fully when setting up at a gig. We now use a 100W small PA fed off the mixer as monitors but this works fine. I think with the nature of so many gains/levels to adjust between the mixer and speakers as well as mic placement and monitors we are not fully getting the most from our set up. Our plan is to set the whole system up somewhere for the day to have a play around with the gains and EQ. The subs can easily be moved on if we feel they add nothing. Thanks again
19.
The subs might add a bit of depth to the vocals but that is no gain at all for the extra box, IMV. I haven't heard those subs but I think cheap subs can be a lottery...and cabs like the Mackie thump are more trouble than they are worth in that they are very mushy. I don't know how you rate your EV's but I'd go with an upgrade there...for all you'll achieve with the cheap sub option
Yes I have used passive EVs before and liked them but these powered ones arent as loud as we had hoped. Like I say when we have more cash we will upgrade the whole PA
20. Dont have the cash for new tops yet so have gone ahead with aome SH subs to see if they help. Cam always move them on when we have more cash. thanks
21. Has anyone had experience with the budget subs range like QTX Skytec etc. They appear to be very cheap at sub £100 on ebay brand new (excuse the pun). The frequency range seems ok but not sure if they are worth a punt. My 3 piece play mid size pubs and only use 12" powered tops for just vocals and sometimes in larger noisier pubs we are pushing them to get them heard. My plan is to buy one sub and just send the HF to the tops so we can push them a bit harder. It would also help if my bass amp packed up I could run it through the PA if need be which I dont fancy doing without a sub. Cash is tight hence we are looking at budget range plus we may not use it that often and as we are only putting vox through a cheap one may be sufficient Our tops are EV's Thanks
22. When I used to be a club singer I did quite a few Neil Diamond songs. Always amazed me when I sang 'Love on the rocks', how many couples got up to have a romantic dance to it
23. I used to go to the birmingham NEC arena a lot when i was younger to see bands (now called the LG arena). Sound was always awful and Ive heard of many big name acts that refuse to play there due to sound quality
24. If the PA is just two small top speakers then maybe the sound guy is being vague as he doesnt want to put your bass through his speakers. Should be okay at low volumes but generally you would want a PA with subs if you want to put a bass guitar through
25. I run a LH500 (500w into 4 ohms) with 2 x 212 and i would still think this would only just be ok for outdoors with no support. No walls to bounce off means you need a whole lot more power with no PA. Id get a 210 or a 212 but would also insist on going through PA for outdoor gigs
