Interesting to note that this is one of the first Mustang basses (Sept 66) before the bass specific logos arrived. It would have had the word 'Bass' added from the Bass V instead, which has come off. The proper 'Mustang Bass' decals can be seen on basses from approbations Nov 66 onwards and is reproduced on the JMJ

Mine are the same (on my P bass). I bought a spare set (760fx) and the silks are green, which La Balla confirmed is genuine. The 760MUS set on my mustang all line up perfectly but I suppose they would as they’re designed specifically for that one bass - I thought some of you might find it satisfying!

Cheers, yeah me too - the pickups in this give it a really full P bass bark and the J soloed is super punchy and ‘parpy’ - and used solo it has plenty of volume and ‘body’, whereas I usually find a single bridge pickup needs a bit of a bump in bass and vol. It’s a really fun little thing, dead pleased with it!

Just to join the thread with my recent modded '66 'stang. I'll be hoovering up all the posts here later as a recent Short Scale pilot. To be honest, I love the Mustang but I don't really notice the different scale that much - I've always used light strings so the tension is familiar, and the bass sounds very similar to my full scale P. The size is really convenient and I love miniaturisation so I love it to bits, but it feels completely natural and not that different practically to a full scale. I'm changing the controls (vol/vol) to balance/tone soon. I think the shorter scale does accentuate the different hand positions and pickup blends - small change shave a big effect. I didn't expect one of my fave sounds being to use the top thumb rest and play on the end of the neck. Fave overall though is P pickup with 50% of the Jazz, digging in and letting the notes rasp - it sounds really fruity. I've been playing it and looking at it so much these last few days that the shape just seems 'right' to me visually. 'Normal' basses look awkward now. Before, I thought Mustangs looked awkward. Weird.

Hi folks A box seems overkill, especially as it would need to be even wider than a box used for a hard case. Has anyone shipped a big/deep gig bag like a Mono or Fusion case and what did you use? I’m wondering if I could wrap it in brown paper or wrap it in bin liners and tape…it’s not going to require padding after all. Maybe I can just put stamps on it!

Thanks! Yeah I think the key is to avoid silicone. Re the cracks, just wondered if getting polish in the cracks might not be best for the underlying wood but guess if it’s the right polish it won’t be absorbed as such.

Any recommendations? Looking for something to apply to a cracked and worn nitro finish.

I’m thinking about changing the vol/vol on my PJ mustang for blend/tone (don’t need a vol). Local tech said it would be fine but I could use a no load tone pot so when it’s on 10 it’s removed from the circuit. Might do it at some point.

Definitely! And the come in so many cool colours! I think I’ll put Elixir strings on the Squier and it’ll be a good opposite number to the Fender. The fretboard in the squier is really dark and nice looking. I was expecting to need to ‘feed’ it with Planet Waves Hydrate but it’s fine, especially compared to some I’ve seen online. In some ways holds its own compared to the Fender, especially for the price. The body weight very little so there’s a bit of neck dive whereas the Fender is perfectly balanced and weighs 7.6lbs.

Hm neither have I! Quite a few people change the lollipop tuners on the JMJ signature for lightweight ones so maybe you can find a set of those?

Always liked the look of these. I saw this one on eBay too and was pretty tempted. Really like the wooden covers and the little details. Colour looks great, too - prefer the white plate myself.

I think Fender have started using them again recently on some reissue models, so hopefully you can get some without the 'Vintage tax' I really quite like modified basses, and would rather have a vintage modified bass than a refinished one, weirdly. Both affect value in the buyer's favour of course
