I like mine being active - 90% of the time I play it passive and with the EQ centred there is no difference in the sound, and it is nice to have a bit of adjustability that I am familiar with when using other amplifiers with which I am not familiar.

The thing with the Vbass and the VB99 is that the processing is much more complex than a typical modeller, in as much as it individually processes each string through a dedicated pickup/preamp system. That's the expensive bit, so making individual pedals with only a few things in them would actually be really expensive and counter productive. Good idea though. I should be getting a VB99 soon to review but I am an avid Vbasser. Going to the studio with it in a couple of weeks so will get some decent recordings and a video up too. Cheers ped

I really like Bart pickups when in the right bass. To my ears it sounded warm, punchy and superbly clean. Isn't the 5er J+J?

I had one for a while, it was my first proper bass. I thought it sounded superb, the barts (P+J) really suited the bass and I agree with 4000 on the sound. I have a song I recorded with mine here: [url="http://www.freewebs.com/mrped/facethemusic.htm"]http://www.freewebs.com/mrped/facethemusic.htm[/url] (the track is Coasting Down Vesuvius (lol)) The only reason I sold it in the end was because I thought the neck was a bit unstable, I seemed to be forever adjusting it, but on reflection I think it was just me working out the fact that I like stupidly low action with no relief, but without the knowledge of that exact fact at the time. All round a great bass, unusual, beautifully made and Mike Pedulla is a nice bloke (and Christine IIRC at Customer Services). I remember paying much less than £1000 for mine but then I did get very lucky and sold/traded it well above the value. P.s apologies for the utterly tasteless and immature track, at the time it was kind of the point!

Clang and brightness can be from a very low action and lack of neck relief, so think about adding a bit of height to the strings and introducing a slight bow to the neck so the strings won't clack the frets when you play. Personally I like it low, straight, clanky and clean!

BTW if I plug my bass directly into my poweramp my sound remains the same but I don't have the options the Vbass gives me like monitoring or synths.

Maybe they are too expensive? Maybe people don't like IEMs (I know many don't for a fact). Maybe not everyone likes fiddling and messing about (see my post above Alex). As you are comparing it to your amplifier then I can only say that as a preamp, mated to an appropriate power amp, then it is just another option you can choose in terms of powering a speaker. Some love Markbass, some love valves, some love separates - horses for courses. FWIW my valve sound was always super clean and hifi so I can't speak for a grindy valve sound (I feel most of that is due to the valve power section anyway) but as a clean signal producer I found it every bit as good as both the Trace V4 and the Mesa 400+. I always play with a super clean sound with barely any EQ and as a result my bass sounds pretty much the same through anything. It just so happened that the pod also did lots of other jobs, so I kept it, for a while. Having said that, for live use my pod was pretty much bypassed anyway, as is my Vbass. ped

I used it as a pre into my V4 for a touch of reverb, as a pre direct to desk, as a AISO driver and audio interface for recording... all sorts. You cannot compare a pod to a bass rig as it is a different thing. I think I know what you are getting at but the advantage of the pod is not only a monitoring solution (where the venue has decent PA) but as a whole host of other things too. Match a pod to a power amp (I have my Vbas into a 1u 800w poweramp) and you essentially have an amp head which is capable of powering any speaker and shifting just as much air as you mention... Like I mentioned, I used mine in all kinds of ways alongside some of the 'best' valve amplifiers in the business and the pod stood up to them in every way weather used live with a poweramp or as one of the many other things it can do which a straight valve head cannot. The Vbass is even better! ped

You certainly have to be a certain type of player to embrace things like the pod. It does take a lot of tweaking and mucking about to get what you want, but some people love that (like me). If you know how to get it, you can get anything you want from the pod. Aside from the whole digital/analogue argument (I can't tell the difference) then there is really no reason to say that it is an inferior piece of equipment to any other solution. To say that 'if it was any good how come everyone doesn't use them' is plainly ridiculous. Some players like simplicity and that is fair enough, but there are amazing options out there for those who like to tweak and fiddle. In all honesty once you have your patches set up and tried them in various settings, it becomes the most simple piece of plug 'n' play equipment out there because one box does it all! Cheers ped

It's the left channel of my stereo... nowhere else to put the speaker. They are too far apart really but my living room is the wrong sort of shape what with the Vdrums in the other corner!
