The mxr envelope filter is triggered by the input signal. Putting any compression (i.e. dirt)in front of it will reduce it's responsiveness. This is why my chain goes filter > compressor > dirt > booster/d.i. This way I feel I have maximum control.

Currently I'm running two large-ish floorstanders (for wich mrs B gives me crap, but I borrowed some fancy looking bookshelf ones -tannoy, pioneer and eclipse- even she could hear the shocking loss of quality) a centre and a sub (for fun watching movies) I tried 5.1 and 7.1 setups but found it gimmicky and not worth the clutter. Maybe play her favorite music through quality speakers more often?

For preamp pedals a DI can be very usefull, for other types of pedal not so much, it will very much depend on what you are looking to accomplish soundwise. Use one to bypass the preamp on the tatty house rig, go straight to FOH, for recording, use to take the tuner out of the signal chain... it's nice to fall back on sometimes.
