Switching from Electric Fretless to EUB/Upright Acoustic
Clarky replied to Jase's topic in EUB and Double Bass
It all depends on the practicalities. IMHO a DB is more satisfying to play and sounds better, period. But if you have to cart it around frequently or on public transport or you have back issues etc an EUB is obviously a sensible alternative. The Aria I just sold (to obbm) is a pretty good value compromise and much better than a Stagg. But really good EUBs (Yamaha, Eminence, Volante etc) run to the same price as a good DB (up to a few grand). I think there are a few threads in this section of the forum on the different types of DB (laminate vs carved etc) and which ones are good for the money. For example, Gareth Hughes picked up a DB from Thomann which he is very happy with for under a grand. Perhaps PM him? -

South East Bass Bash Year 4, Surrey, 27th November 2010
Clarky replied to silverfoxnik's topic in Events
A huge thanks to Nik, Colin and co for working so hard to set this up and to those who gave teach-ins (compression was never so entertaining!). A good time was had by all! And as I understand a decent amount of money was raised for some worthwhile causes. RIP Old Git -

Its so cool
Click on your profile Mrs T, then choose the drop-down option just below picture for 'Find members posts' then scroll to end In fact here is your first post Mrs T (there were a bunch of emoticons with the text that don't seem to want to copy/paste): "Hello You sure this isn't just a dummy site to get rid of me from Basstalk?"

Mine: "Hi, new forumite here. I have a Polytone MiniBrute 1 bass combo (with 12 inch speaker; metal grill) which I bought 10 years ago from the old Bass Centre in Wapping for £450 for use with a double bass. In the end I didn't get on with the double bass and the amp has been sat in my study for about 8 years unused (and never gigged). It is essentially as new without a scratch. Anyone any idea what its worth (Bass Gallery has had a s/h one for sale for £450 for quite a time now so its obviously less than that)? Any interest in it? I am based in central London. Cheers Clarky" Funny, as having re-discovered DB this amp would probably have saved me a load of money had I just hung on to it!

Bump for our next gig, which is next Wednesday evening in Camden. We are onstage about 10pm. Cheers!

Marcus is a music student and new to the forum so not used to buying/selling here. However, I can confirm that he was great to deal with, clear in his communications and paid very promptly. Another trustworthy BC'er, which is nice! Hope you enjoy the Jazz bass, Marcus
Innovation Honeys could do the job, I reckon. They're not incredibly low tension, but much looser feeling than most steel cored strings like Spirocores, and they're easy to get a decent bowed sound out of.
I happen to have a near-mint set for sale (see other thread in DB/EUB forum)

I have pages and pages of feedback from buying and selling over two and a half years and I can say for sure I have only made a profit on a trade once in all that time - and even that profit was a paper profit only - would have been a loss when I add in what I had spent on the bass on setup, new bridge saddles, new strings etc. Like b5 I think of this as a community not eBay. Clearly not everyone agrees with me but we are all entitled to our own opinions.
Fair enough, that's sort-of what I expected. I was just wondering if they'd be any good for unamplified busking but I guess probably not.
My guess is there are definitely better strings out there for acoustic busking but someone like jakesbass or the more experienced DB'ers are much better qualified than me. -
Hey Clarky how are the Silver Slaps for pizz volume and sustain?
I'm probably not the best person to ask due to my limited experience. I would say their volume is less than the old Thomastik Superflexibles I used to have but still decent enough. The E and A don't have as much sustain either but I suspect thats because they are designed for slapping. For me they are great as I am playing live through a preamp/amp anyway and they are by far the easiest strings on the fingers I have found. -
Can someone do the same thing for setups please?
If you insist - bung some strings on, if the bass buzzes to b*ggery turn the truss rod a bit so it doesn't any more, if the neck resembles a banana turn truss the other way. Simples. Then hand round lysdexia's photo album -
Hi Clarky,on a slightly different note, i'm looking for a lower tension grade of string, have you any advice for a string novice!!
I've only tried a few types but my favourites are Presto Nylonwound (pretty expensive at just over £100 a set) and Innovation Silver Slaps (just over £70 a set). The latter are very thick and very low tension and to my mind the easiest playing strings I have come across. I have them on both my DBs now -
Right, excellent, I've printed that off, should be able make it last 45 minutes, with a bit of waffle eh, cheers!
Bring a load of lysdexia's photo albums and hand them round, you'll be amazed how quickly the 45 minutes will go (and how few questions you get on compression) -
Fine by me, anyone got a good book about comrpessors I can have read of then??
Its simple 51m0n (unintended pun), if you have compression on zero it does nothing and if you go to ten it squishes the sound. You can't buy that level of knowledge, mate -
Don't worry about it, let your ears decide. There are strong trends in buying and selling on here. When I first came onto the old site, Laklands were what EVERYONE wanted, and they were talked about in such reverential tones that, having been a Fenderhead all of my life, I thought I must be missing something major. I was about to buy a Duck Dunn when, all of a sudden all the guys who had raved about Laklands started selling them, which gave me pause for thought and I realised the Lakland thing was a phase, no more. There's a strong herd mentality on here, so it only takes a few people to sell and others start thinking "sh*t, perhaps it isn't as good as I thought if all these other guys are selling there's, I'd better sell it" followed by "Oh crap, there's so many on sale the prices are dropping, I'd better sell mine really quick before they drop even further". From what I've heard the TCs are outstanding so I'd not worry about the relatively high amount for sale C
Words wise are these
