Aria SWB-1 Lite for sale (Mark 1 piezo pickup version)
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Monday bump Deal for BCers I have previously dealt with - the Aria with Presto strings installed plus an old spare set of Thomastik strings (the silks are a bit chewed but this would be good as a backup set in case of breakages in a gig) and postage within Uk £500 all-in, or £480 collected. As I mentioned in OP, I will get the bass back next weekend so could hand over at BassBash or post the following week. -
TBH, Musicman basses have never really tickled my fancy ... until I saw this Status-necked one from cd david's 'Black basses' post. Phwoar, its so black and shiny
OK, it's out now. Clarky played London Calling brilliantly on my fretless and, with me being a total t*s*e* (and slightly hard of hearing, of course), I failed to recognise it.
Oh bl**dy hell it was me doing the slide-y bit on your Tony Franklin, wasn't it? In nervy moments (like when surrounded by dozens of bass players who are better than me!) I fall back on a small stock repertoire of bass lines that I won't screw up, London Calling being one of them On topic, the other ultra-recognisable bass line from the Clash has to be 'The Magnificent Seven' (yep, thats in my embarrassed-nervous bass player repertoire too)
So, that's KEN by ELP? I expect it's a surprise, but that's another one with which I have only limited familiarity.
You need to play the bass line stood on a Persian rug while the keyboard player stabs his Moog with a knife. So I'm not altogether surprised its not part of your repertoire, Dave
Hi Steve I'm pretty certain the body is Ash. The wear on the neck is actually minimal. There are a few small lacquer chips on the back and there is the wear on the G string side but that's about it and it's very smooth with no flaking at all. I had a 76 P bass before and it hadn't faired so well as this one.
As a third party, I can tell you Steve that its a lovely player. Nick brought the bass round to mine a few weeks ago and I had a quick noodle on it. Its light, mojo'd in a tasteful way, and an all-round cracking P bass.
Its funny, because sometimes BC is becoming similar to Talkbass to my eyes - after a while, folks who come here to post 'a recognisable bassline', will post their favourite tunes instead, that have nothing to do with being easily recognisable..
Second movement of 'Karn Evil Nine' by Emerson, Lake and Palmer anyone?

Excessive finger noise on A string with Realist pickup
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in EUB and Double Bass
I wonder is putting a felt pad or a bit of tape between the A string and the bridge might take the edge of the harshness?
Thanks for suggestion mate! I tried a bit of bridge foam between string and bridge but no difference. Think I will wait until I try a whole set of Silver Slaps before fiddling further. Played along to Rattlin Bone CD this afternoon and the Eminence felt great (so it should be nicer still with Silver Slaps), just need to sort this slight niggle out. -
HE AINT NEVER BOUGHT NUFFINK FROM ME, INNIT. BLOODY CRAP SITE. WHERE'S THE FISH?

I once tried Weedwackers (the cheap ones off eBay). After several weeks they were still stretching and going horribly flat each time I picked up the bass, and like an above poster said, I swapped the E and A for Innovations (Blacks, I think?) as there was no sustain or volume with them, just a percussive dull thud. That said, I have heard there are better quality Weedwacker-types that solve these problems (I assume the prior post is referring to these, Lamberts).

Excessive finger noise on A string with Realist pickup
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Well, I just swapped the 'A' temporarily for a Silver Slap 'A' from my DB (and added the cushioning felt pad between string ball end and tail piece) and there was no discernible difference, so I guess I am just going to have to play around with amp/EQ settings until I fix the problem. It did, though, reinforce that I prefer the (even) lower-tension feel of Silver Slaps so I will definitely swap the strings over later this week. -
Excessive finger noise on A string with Realist pickup
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Thanks Chris. On family duty now but will try swapping over for a different A (Helicore or Thomastik Superflexible) later today and see if its sorts the problem. Its not horrendous but it is a bit annoying and only happens on the A so it sorta gets my goat! Has also occurred to me that the Helicores came with felt pads at the end of the strings which cushioned the brass ball-end against the metal tail-piece ... so maybe I should try installing the felt pad on the A as well? -
Have you tried replacing the supplied A string?
It is a replacement, it came stock with D'Addario Helicores which are too taut for my liking, so I swapped over for a set of Innovation Honeys last night. TBH, I think I prefer Silver Slaps to Honeys (even lower tension) so I will probably swap over again in the next week or so. I am just concerned that there's an issue with certain frequencies with the new bass/pickup. Do you think I should try swapping back the Helicore A as an experiment? -
Been playing my new Eminence EUB today. With the Platinum Pro EQ I can get it sounding amazingly DB-like when amplified. One small problem though - the D and G strings sound superb and the E nearly as clear (its fractionally muddier), but the A seems to be picking up excessive amounts of finger noise, resulting in a popping type noise that becomes intrusive if you have to play faster pizzicato bits on the A. Is this the string (Innovation Honey), the interaction with the string/bridge/pickup (David Gage Realist), or perhaps the action (whch I have set quite low; albeit I tried raising it and there wasn't any real difference)? Any thoughts gratefully received. Cheers Clarky

Ian Morton from SMART hand delivered my new Eminence RN4 today (which was above and beyond the call of duty on a Saturday; great service!) First impressions are that its beautifully made, feels very double bass-like and is very simple to assemble/disassemble for travelling (though I will only take the neck off if we do gigs involving trains or flights). Comes with a good gigbag and a rocksolid, hard plastic golf bag container for flying. The Helicore strings were a bit taut for my liking (as other BCers have told me) and I have swapped them over for Innovation Honeys which are lower tension and have made it a dream to play. Not been able to play it amplified yet as I only got the strings sorted about 10.20pm this evening, that awaits me tomorrow. This is a lovely instrument with as much DB vibe as its possible to get for an EUB, very well-designed and very user-friendly.
