Percy Jones, Steve Moses, Paual Sullivan Video
Clarky replied to Spoombung's topic in General Discussion
Incredible bass player. I dug out my old copy of 'Livestock' by Brand X the other day and played it. Not really a jazz-rock afficionado but that album really hits the spot with me. Very atmospheric and melodic. The distinctive sound he had with the fretless Precision is the same as he had with a fretless Wal and now a fretless Ibanez, proving that it really is in the fingers ... not the instrument. -

Name drop time! I just took Mrs C out into the smoke for our traditional sw***y (deliberately used work as it triggers profanity filter!) pre-Christmas night out. This time we tried The Wolseley, next to The Ritz. Sat between tables including artist Lucien Freud and historian Lady Antonia Fraser and who should walk in and sit just behind us, with girlfriend and kids in tow? Yep, Sade! Other than the inevitable effect of the years, she was a bit of a time loop - same scraped back hair, big round hooped earrings, black outfit and still a beautiful lady. Bit spooky for me, given I was contributing to this thread only yesterday.

Sorry - to clarify on the sound I am after, it's as a backup to a DB and not in any way as a solo Pastorius/Jones type instrument. I couldn't even come within a million miles of their technical abilities! Think Boz Burrell in Bad Company I guess, ie, unobtrusive, unflashy and blending in with the song rather than "look at me"! From the answers (for which thanks, gents) so far it looks a clear vote for flats.
-
Simple question. I always assumed it was best to use flats on a fretless - if only not to scratch up the fretboard - but was watching the Percy Jones clip earlier and followed up by reading that he uses DR round strings. I am guessing you get a more biting attack with rounds and less slide-y/mwah-y stuff going on. As I have a fretless ebony board coming fairly soon for my Jazz I am interested in people's views here. Thanks, Clarky
christ who cares if she got a "very very limited vocal range" (which i dont agree with) its the music thats important.....What because shes black she is supposed to sing like Aretha...? i was expecting a little credit for an artist who has been going for 25 years+ and still writing...
Blimey, B5, don't think anyone said she's supposed to sing like Aretha Its a music blog site - you put something up asking for opinions, you get opinions. Bit of an overreaction mate

TBH, most of the gigs I did with my punk band over 2010 were rubbish - the same hassles mentioned above with regard to getting gear there, sound-checking, hanging around for hours etc .... and when you neither get paid, nor play to a more than a handful of people, and then get home after midnight with the alarm going off at 5.30pm for work ..... All a bit pants, really However, the first gig with my new band Rattlin Bone was a blinder (maybe 200 people, dancing and singing etc). If my gigs are more like that in future well, blimey, I am really looking forward to them
Some recent covers my band have been doing have got me into playing with a pick. Try playing "Ceremony" by Joy Division finger style and it just sounds awful. I used to be a finger style snob but I'm certainly converting. Picked is just a different sound to me now.
Great song and could not be played fingerstyle and sound right. In fact I use this song to see if I have set up a bass properly as the intonation will be out if the bridge isn't bang on and the strings will buzz to b*ggery if the truss rod isn't right

Smooth Operator must have been one of a very few times that "the charts" had a bass solo in a top 10 hit. I quite like that song (and sung along to it like a saddo whilst driving home from work with some retro radio station on in the last tube strike!) but I'm afraid I generally find her vocals devoid of warmth. I bought her album back in the early 80s but moved it on swiftly. Sorry B5 .. although I did play a lot of LOTW, Warriors and Incognito around the same time if it makes you feel better
-
Can I just add that the 'best' thickness of the pick and speed of playing will depend on how you pick. Guys who use strong forearm and wrist movements to pick from my observation tend to prefer thicker picks. I played in a fast metal band and a fast punk band but I get on much better with a flexible pick as I seem to use more finger and wrist movement when picking whereas a heavy gauge pick 'chokes' or jams on the strings with me. I use Alien medium/ thin picks ( the glow in the dark ones with an Alien face on them ). I also like the jointed pick that Wayne mentioned above. The only downside to a thin pick I have found is that as they heat up during a gig between your fingers they get softer and softer so I always have a fresh one in my back pocket just in case
The impression I get about Fender Ps is that they vary a lot in profile, rather than width
Agreed, I have a Fender Pino - based on a 62RI - and an Am Vintage 62RI Precision. Yet the neck of the Pino is more comfortable to play and sits better in the hand. I think its shallower, even though the width appears identical. Which is odd, given they should be based on the same template?

That must have been a most pleasant show for you I had a gig recently where I shared a dressing room and stage with this lady. She's an absolute diamond.
