1. I bought a brand new 4 string classic ash/maple a few months ago but I've been playing the Steinberger and Precision with the band. Think it's still got the plastic bags over the tuners and pickguard. It's hardly been out of the case. It has the Louis Johnson vibe with black guard. If anybody is looking for an 'as new' classic £1200 + delivery will seal it... pm me if you are interested.
2. I've been gigging mine over the last year or so... used to drive the band mad but I think they're used to it now, especially as we've been doing some retro-styled gigs. Most people under 30 ain't seen one before so for them it doesn't have that 80's stigma and think it's quirky but cool. I was at that Police Gateshead gig in '82 which was the 1st time I saw one 'live'. Another one of my favourite players Phil Spalding was also playing one around that time. I wish I still had my original L2 that I got in the 80s but I managed to find another one in the USA a couple of years ago and had it shipped over. I actually prefer the look of the L2, more tank-like with those screws on the front plate and bridge. With my Markbass F1 amp and Berger I can travel to rehearsals on the scooter. The Berger fits in the boot!
3. I like both rosewood and maple on a sunburst P, I think they both look well. The rosewood is the 'classic' look but the maple/sunburst has something too.
4. I'd forgotton all about this... yes, I still have it and it's available.
5. Interesting... I thought the SVT III non-pro wouldnt be too different from the later models but I'm pleased to hear that you think there is a huge difference. In the last year I got a blueline III pro but that too was a huge disappointment and not as good as I remembered. I have a IIP preamp which I think sounds superb once I dial the bass up. I like the tone better than some of my more expensive pres. That one is a keeper. I'm interested in checking out a III non-pro now.
6. Bought a Trace Elliot GP12SMX from Stevie and it couldn't have gone smoother. Amp arrived on time and safe. Thanks for a painless transaction Stevie.
7.
I asked Ashdown that very question a while back, and they confirmed that the amps are indeed the same.
That's not what I was told by the Ashdown rep. Leaving aside the physical difference of the illuminated 'on' button which is missing from the JJ to keep it more affordable, I was informed that the preamp is also voiced towards JJ's preference. Who really knows though...
8. I think the F1 is a cracking little amp and quite possibly my favourite micro. I've just bought one before they become discontinued as rumoured.
9. How about the 2012 Ampeg Heritage B-15? Think the UK RRP is £4995. That'll be about £166 per watt. Only 100 made worldwide and probably presold already. Btw, anyone needing a mint Hellborg preamp could do worse than email me and make a decentish offer...
10.
love the bass playing on the 1st Rezillos Album
I'd say this is perhaps the best bass playing found on any of the early punk albums. And this is coming from a Stranglers fan. William Mysterious makes it all sound so easy :-) The way he puts in little accents and stops along with the runs is amazing. 35 years later I still marvel at the bass playing on Can't Stand The Rezillos.
11. It's one of the nicest looking affordable rigs you can buy right now. That black check tolex is superb. Sounds good too, even the compressor. I let mine go the fan noise was ultimately too much for me. Maybe some fans are louder than others.
12. That baby is a player. Keep good care of her.
13. If was called the Classic 250 it would appear to be below TC's Classic 450... Reidmar doesn't have those prejedices.
14. That looks a beauty. If I didn't have a 60s style P bass build already started I'd have snapped this up.
15. A sad state of affairs but quite true. Dealers usually have to buy their shop stock upfront. As you say, a lot of sales have now moved online leaving the dealers in no mans land.
16. A very nice combo in great condition. It was my living room practice amp too and it excels. Warm and clear is how I'd describe it.
17. Surprised there isn't an update to this. There was a one in the US on ebay a short while ago and it went for about £2500 if I recall. I was worried that if I through caution to the wind and went for it and subsequently imported it into the UK that customs could seize it, I'd be in bother and severely out of pocket. I presume those regulations apply to 'recent 'used items as well as new. Luckily there is another run of 100 Heritage B-15s, this time for worldwide distribution with the required changes to get through the European regulations. In the UK the RRP is an unbelievable £4995. I think the amp sounds lovely and toasty but the Drophead is certainly a more favourably priced alternative. But I really dig the 60s vibe on the B-15. The best bass tone I ever had in the studio was when I played through the studio B-15. It was just how I like to hear warm bass.
18. I would be interested in the head...
19. Some interest but nothing definate as yet.
20. A recent acquisition of mine before Christmas was Owen's immaculate MB Fusion. It is my first foray into GK just to see if I get on with them. Really shines for quick punchy stuff but I'm looking for something more slow and woolly for the acoustic thing I'm on with at the moment. Two seperate gain stages to switch sounds, contour knob with switchable frequency, bass, treble, high mid, lo mid, switchable limter, deep switch and cool light ring round the on switch... and 500 watts. Never needed to push it volume-wise but my small nudges at the early stages indicate it might be very loud :-) Small, lightweight and has three 12ax7s and an intelligent fan - hurray! Only other similar amp that I know is the Streamliner but that's different in character. I did a live radio session with it and within a mix it had great warmth, depth and clarity and sounded great. Everyone was impressed. Easily holds it's own against the other lightweight heads. Possible trades could include Ampeg SVT 7 or 8 Pro or maybe Trace SMX (with cash adjustments where applicable). No photos ready but really is immaculate. £430 delivered. Now sold and on it's way Thanks all.
21. I recently sold my S2 but there are many practical benefits to the headless design. Tuners won't get knocked, even in transit. Your will find the bass hardly strays out of tune. Lack of a headstock is supposed to help get an even response from the neck. That said, these days I prefer the look of a headed Status and the choice of strings will be bigger without resorting to other means of locking the string.
22. As a rule I love the 12 band SMX, it's one of my all-time favourite amps with everything I need in a bass amp and the sound to boot. These days I would stay away from the preshape which scoops too many mids and leaves too much bass and clack. This never bothered me in the 80s! I swapped out the valve for another and with the right EQ and compression the amp did a reasonable job in Ampeg territory. It needn't always sound like 'typical' Trace.
23. Yes, I'm about to take my first step with GK. Don't worry though - if GK is not my sound I'll put it back up :-)
24. Bob is a great guy to deal with. No problems. All the best Mark
25. Thanks Wally. Pleasure to do a deal. Cheers.
