1. Gas strikes again so I'm moving on my newish Ampeg portaflex 'combo'. Both items are as new, ungigged, immaculate and with original packaging. It sounds great and has a really usable compressor which thickens things up nicely. The tone is unmistakenly Ampeg and it really does look a million dollars - the black tolex is drop-dead gorgeous. Looks like the lowest web price for this setup is £680 (£380 + £330 not including any shipping). It really is as new, because it practically IS new. I'd rather not split as the cab has been pre-drilled for the width of the PF500 head (you have to do this to mount one of the heads). The drilling has been done well without error. Head flips inside the cab for transportation, the Portaflex is still a great idea. I prefer the sound of this over my Ampeg SVTIIP and my old V4B. Sounds great with my Fender P or Steinberger, really warm and fat. It will arrive with you as if it came direct from Ampeg - all boxes, packagaing, manuals etc.
2. I've owned a Shuker JJB and if I was to order another and change the colour I would request a greenburst with rosewood neck. BBM is well cool but I've kinda overdosed on that colour combination in my time. The 1st 3 Stranglers albums, the ones with the most sharp, aggressive bass tone were recorded with the rosewood and I did find the stock JJB too aggressive for me these days with the ash and maple. Though it did sound like straight from Black And White to an extent!
3.
Mine has arrived and sounds fantastic through my compact. The only problems are the loud fan...
Yes it's a shame that the fan is fairly loud. I'm hoping there is an upgrade I can do. It's a wonderful amp though. I think I've found my settings for a fingerstyle alder P / TI flats by cutting significantly at 450hz with a slight treble cut and compressor on half (no Hi/Lo boosts engaged). The compressor adds a nice squareness to the note attack and the overall sound is not harsh at all but almost valvey. There are still plenty of mids in there. Very John McVie. I might even get another PF-115HE for it. I also need to find Ampeg PF cabinet covers but as far as I know there aren't any yet.
4.
If they made a trace micro head with the preshapes, a graphic and some cool lighting I think I'd do all sorts of over excited dance moves and start franticly selling stuff
Wow, that would be cool, especially if it sounded right. Sadly, as much as I have a soft spot for some of the amps that I have owned (with the Trace being one of the very best), the thought of a big heavy amp nowadays seems a step backwards. It was hard but I think I'm gradually accepting lightweight as the way forward. So a Trace amp with a real Trace signature punchy tone like the old ones would be excellent.
5. Oops correction to original post... the extension cabs models are EX112ER not HT112ER as originally posted. I got the model names mixed up. The only horn is in the powered IP112ER, the others just have the 12" drivers. Glad my Summit is doing the business for you! - I'll get back to you on price of one EX112ER when I find the receipts.
6. I'm considering selling my Berg IP112ER. As you probably know this is a compact 1000w powered cabinet with a specially tuned DSP mated to a this speaker (and fully adjustable horn) for superior performance. This is the 2nd revision which has the extended bass range and comes with a lovely Berg cover (+£50). Sadly, these babies are now discontinued which is strange considering how unique and well respected they are. Check out Talkbass for the rave reviews. Would anyone be interested around the £1150 mark? It's not seen a stage but been a quality studio and luxurious home setup but it's time for change... I also have two of the EX112ER extension cabs although the IP can only run one extra cab along with the powered 112 for the full 1000 watts in a compact stack. I may keep hold of one of the cabs and may do a deal on a IP112ER + EX112ER for £1400 delivered with covers. There are no marks or scratches on any of the cabs. Add your preamp of choice and be prepared to be impressed.
7. Head is now sold and cab is now on hold.
8. Head is sold pending payment so just the cab left at the moment.
9.
Looking to sell as one but if I split then yes you can have first dabs on the cab. PICS NOW TAKEN AND ADDED
Now open to splitting. HEAD = £155 CAB = £165 Carriage = £12 each.
10. Bump. Pics now available. EDIT: NOW SOLD
11.
Should you consider splitting these at all... Can I have first dibs on the cab please?
Looking to sell as one but if I split then yes you can have first dabs on the cab. PICS NOW TAKEN AND ADDED
12.
Seem to recall the original Baby Blue running 120 watts through the 8 ohm rated internal speakers, although capable of running 150 watts at 4 ohms through an external speaker. The second version of the unit ran at 160 watts through its 4 ohm rated internal speakers. (The first version featured two sweet 8" Bag End speakers. The later version featured either Celestion or Eminence speakers.) Either way, lovely bit of kit these.
I've just unboxed it to check as from memory I thought it was 160w before going to 200w. It says on the front 'Tube Preamp / '150w Power Amp. This would tie in with the first versions you describe. I've never had the back off though I was under the impression that this was the Bag End version. Serial number is 121 0581 if it helps. I'll amend the first post. Thanks. .
13. As the title says the much revered and hard to find 'studio reference' SWR Baby Blue 150w power amp / combo. Features the great Baby Blue preamp - with defeatable semi-parametric EQ and aural enhancer, speakers include 2 x8" drivers and 1x5" for the high end. This is the original version and sounds great. Ideal for small gigs or makes a quality home/studio practice amp. Excellent condition. £320 + £15 delivery or Doncaster collection. COMBO NOW SOLD MORE PICS HERE SWR Baby Blue for sale
14. Decided to sell a couple of practice rigs so here's the first... Bought in 2011, home-use only, no tears or scratches, comes with original boxes - the Micro VR is like a mini SVT and looks and sounds the business. The head and cabinet are 200w. Rig now sold, thanks. MORE PICS AT Ampeg Micro VR for sale
15. I will agree that the F500 is 'fiddly'. I borrowed an F1 and then based on that I bought an F500 which I had for a while. It was ok but didn't compare to my more expensive preamp/Berg combination so I sold it as I didn't need 2 rigs. My situation has changed and I now want a 2nd rig again and I would take the F1 instead of the F500. This sounds delicious. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49nnpXzPMlA I don't have any experience yet with the LM3.
16. Yes that green one is a 60s Fender - perhaps a 64 or 67. It is the one used on the 1st 3 Stranglers albums which is largely the tone people think of when talking about JJB. This bass just sounded unique (and yes, the torn speakers as well). Rosewood neck too. Apparently the green spray job is quite rough when you see it up close. He broke it but when glued back together it just never sounded the same.
17. I had one. Beautiful sounding warm amp at any volume.
18. Bump for Ampeg. EDIT: and now sold offline.
19. I had an early Shuker JJB. With Roto rounds, nice action and played with a pick it sounded just like the the bass from Black and White. In the end it was too alive and aggressive for what I need today. My 18 year old self would have loved it though. I also had a 2008 Maple/Black P that I thought sounded just as good. Either got me in the ball-park of the JJB tone if I wanted it, with the Shuker just edging it but for a traditional, warmer P tone I would go with the Fender. It's funny, the first 3 Stranglers albums (the ones that defined the JJ tone) were from an alder and rosewood bass.
20. Bump - this is the cool looking one from the days of St Louis Music era USA production. Has tube drivers with adjustable plate voltage for that tube squish or dynamic solid-state type tone. Five tubes total (I think). Works perfect. Unlike newer Ampegs you can more easily see where the dials are set. Sounds like US Ampeg. Open to near offers.
21. Similar to the one that has recently sold on here I have a blackface Ampeg SVT3 with the blue legend in very good condition. I will include functional 3U flightcase and cool 1U Ampeg blanking plate. Original ebay listing here with some pics http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...E:X:RTQ:GB:1123 I now have a Jule Monique that fits my needs better so I'm letting it go. Looking for £380 which is less than what I paid. I'll include UK shipping in the price.
22. The general concensus seems to be pre-Peavey, pre-Gibson with perhaps a peak around MKV / Series 6. Ultimately I would take an SMX myself - the one with the fancier graphics but 12 band EQ, dual compressor, valve input and overall tone balance. At least that is my experience with the preamps alone. Sounded superb to me and it was the last Trace I sold from my collection including early Ah250 GP11, MKV, S6 Silver. I tried a new model Trace a month or so ago and I really wanted it to be a Trace for the new era - but it didn't do it for me and there was some distortion related to the second gain arrow as a note decayed and this light faded.
23. I have found nothing that sounds similar to classic Trace Elliot. It has a certain sound of its own. That said, one option would be to pair a Trace pre with a Bergantino IP rig of whatever cab size you choose. That worked extremely well for me. And they're both green
