I've finally decided that my rig of choice is a Berg IP + preamp after months and months of back and forth deliberation. So now I'm going to take the plunge and sell my 'real' amps. Somewhat tentatively I offer up a mint (and I do mean mint) Markbass F500 amp. Ridiculously small and light it is like a turbo-charged F1 with more flexible EQ and better DI out. I will also include the proper Markbass branded amp bag which keeps things nice and scratch-free. These bags are about £80 by themselves. The amp has had very little home use and is just like new. It seems the going rate today is £749 without the bag. With bag about £825. I'm asking £630 plus postage for both here prior to evilbay. Pics to follow later today. TRADES: Could be interested in Kern IP777, Alembic F2-B, Millennia STT-1 preamps with suitable cash adjustments. NOW WITH PICS: This is now on hold subject to payment. Thanks for the interest. NOW SOLD. THANKS.

My GP11 AH250 is so old it doesn't even have any vinyl covering. Just black wood! Exactly like the one I toured with in 1986.
To reiterate, the head sounds 'darker', less 'lively' than my AH250SMX or the AMP BH-420 on-hand. Any thoughts?
I also have an old(er) GP11 and I remember mine being exactly as you describe. In fact, I've just A/B'ed the preamp out now against a later GPSMX preamp through a Berg IP and there is a HUGE difference. The old GP11 sounds a LOT bassier and 'muddier'. I would say mine should have a tech look at it as I have to really use the graphic to get any top end snap out of it. Doesn't sound right to me and yet I used to use these amps back in the 80s with no trouble in that area at all. Is it age? What could be the problem?
I tried the new Ashdown Spyder 550 amp today and was mightily impressed. It was designed to purposely sound different from the ABM range. It has more in common with cleaner digital amps. In fact, I compared to to the TC 450 head and honestly thought it sounded better.
The Spyder is an all-valve preamp (unlike the ABM) with an ABM SS power stage is it not... I wouldn't have expected it to be compared to clean and digital? I had a TC 450 for a short while. I didn't think it sounded any better than stuff I already own - although it's range of features was ideal.

It IS one of the best bass preamps out there. Currently taking pride of place with my Berg IP.

I would have said more than £1000 too due to the hype and rarity of a Trace V8. I would expect to see them advertised at £1400+ if the condition is right. Rightly or wrongly they have attained legendary status. I have a V4 combo (with the 2nd OD channel and compressor). It has a million tubes and it is indeed real valve tone.
JCM800's nail that sound.
+1. I can vouch for that. I owned one back in the 80s and it was the definitive British valve sound for rock. It had a sweet spot that just punched and growled. Reminded me of Bruce Foxton. Technique and setup also plays its part - I would recommened big heavy pick like a Gibson and play over the P pickup (slighty towards the bridge) with the action quite low and the neck straightish.

P bass, maple neck, rotosound rounds... and low action.
Thanks Dan, got a good idea what its worth. At the moment I have a number of interested parties but thats all. Not too bothered if it does not sell as the price will most likely only go one way up, but if someone wants it and it is a reasonable offer, (not a silly price), then I will let it go purely because I am downsizing my collection and happy to take a bit of profit on what I paid for it a couple of years ago. Steve
Someone has to ask... what price are you looking for Steve? -

Javier bought two basses from me - a Pino P Bass and a Ric Blueburst 4003. No problems whatsoever and a real pleasure to deal with. I would have no worries trading with Javier again. Thanks.

Anyone A/B'ed a Fender 62RI P-bass vs a 2009 MIA P?
markorbit replied to Clarky's topic in Bass Guitars
Hi, given my continuing failure to find an early 70s Precision (missed another one on eBay last night) I am looking at US Fender 62RI Precision as a real possibility. So has any BC'er A/B'ed the two models and do they have any comments on the playability, weight, quality etc? In short, is the 62RI worth the extra dosh? Thanks in advance, Clarky
I have a 62RI and have owned numerous Precisions but none from the early 70s. Mainly late 70s or recents. The 62RI is great and that neck is certainly wide and slim. It makes my 2009 feel like a Jazz. Unfortunately I don't get the big P bass vibe from it. I think an early 70s may have the neck profile somewhere between the two which might be the sweet spot. Personally, I love the logo of the late 60s/early 70s Ps the best. The 62RI feels like a real P bass. I find that sometimes the back of the neck can get a little sticky. I have mine set with La Bella flats with mute and it does that thing very well. -

The new Fenders are fantastic but I've realised that a Precision only feels like a Precision to me when it has a 1.75" nut width. The new ones are 1.625" I think. I prefer the 62 reissues now. The new ones come with a great moulded case though. I think a P bass is very versatile - it's all in the setup and technique. I have flats and a mute on mine and while it may not do modern slap that well the mute is a fantastic device for clean studio tone. Play at the back for a picky 60s style or at the front for big round pillowy bass. It's all in there. I'm using La Bella 760FL and they are great for giving me what I think of when I think of bass. I find the versatility comes from the fingers not the tone knob.
