70's for a geniune one (unless you get a mongrel like the above mentioned one), but you'll also have to contend with the 70's pup spacing (bridge pup is about 3/4 an inch further towards the bridge I think).
I had a 66 Jazz that had blocks which I think was the first year they did them. Great cab and a great guy to deal with! Steve

Here are some more pictures. If anyone wants any specifics please ask. The bass has a beautiful birds eye maple fingerboard and is nice and light (about 8.5 lbs I estimate). I have also shown the control plate and preamp that was in their originally which I am including in the sale. Starting a new thread for this as I now have pics sorted etc and a severe case of GAS which means I want to get rid of this to fund it. I was going to keep it as its an awesome jazz but I have two great 5's so this really is a luxury to keep. Its a US Lakland that has been modded by Mike Lull. Norstrand pick ups and Aguilar 18V OBP-3 pre have been added and its brilliant for slap or fingerstyle. The neck is a joy to play. One minor issue that I won't have time to get sorted is slight acoustic buzzing at the 5th/6th fret on the E string. I guess a setup/fret level would sort this for not too much money but hence why the price is £1100. I paid £1350 for this in August. The buzzing has never bothered me when plugged in and I would gig with it without worry. Would prefer buyer collect and try ideally rather than ship. Its a killer bass. EDIT - The pre amp thats fitted contains a passive tone control which allows the bass to be run passively and roll off treble so you can certainly get nice passive jazz sounds out of this as well. I have owned loads of jazz basses and quite a few Sadowskys. My opinions are as follows. I have only ever played two Fenders that were as good as any Sadowsky (Metro or NYC) that I have played. One was my 65 jazz and the other was a Ltd edition custom shop model which Marcus and Flanker (obviously) also owned. The action on that thing was obscene. You can buy a Sadowsky (Metro or NYC) unseen and know that the quality will be superb. Unless I was flush I would buy a Metro over a NYC as they are 'nearly' as good. The NYC's have a little something extra but I don't think its worth the extra money unless you can afford it. Although saying that Flanker doesn't particularly like Sadowskys and has had NYC ones but he did really like one of the NYC models that I had. There are plenty of other high end jazzes that are equally as good as Sadowskys. I won't say better or worse as once you get to a certain level its all down to tone and personal opinion(s). I really liked the Celinders that I have played and I currently have a USA Lakland JO4 that is probably the nicest jazz that I have ever played (for me). Mark at bass direct has a natural Nordy VJ4 that stole the show at Music Live. Literally everyone wanted to play it and buy it. I guess GB's aren't jazz like enough for you but I would get one regardless :-) If I was in your situation I think I would buy a Celinder if I could get hold of one. Failing that I would get a US Lakland JO. That is no critiscism of Sadowskys just my tastes after trying them all. I would certainly pay the extra to get a metro over a US Fender any day of the week. Hope this helps, Steve

Was a superb day yesterday, much better than I anticipated so well done to the organisers. Richard Bona, TM Stevens and Janek were outstanding in my opinion. Only problem now is I am gassing for a TD650 Steve
Is mine too dear? I would have thought you could source the pups etc for a few hundred quid, that was how I calculated the asking price with that in mind, that someone would either have already or could get the required bits, it does however sound fine as it is. Suppose I could do that aswell but cant be arsed plus I need the cash!
Hi Andy, I was in no way intimating that your bass was too expensive :-) I was saying that a 64 original jazz in a custom colour would usually go for a lot more than £3200 and so whoever bought it would have got a very good deal. I am not really sure what your bass is worth as I am no expert but I didn't whince when I saw your price and if I was after a late 60s jazz would certainly be considering it. Steve
There was a black Jazz went on ebay a week or two back a 64 from memory for £3200 i believe.
If that was completely original then that was a VERY good price in my opinion. I would have thought that a refinned 64 would fetch that.

I have seen/played this bass and its great. Considering the cost it's a match for a light of high end basses. The EBS preamp is pretty good too. Steve

The most awful bass video I think I have ever seen
birdy replied to NJE's topic in General Discussion
Who are we to say whats good and bad? At least the guy seemed genuinely into it and was getting something out of it which is what we all do it for right? Wasn't my cup of tea at all but then neither is thrash metal or whatever its called nowadays but fair play to anyone getting up and having a go I say. Steve -
Thanks Jon - it was a pleasure meeting you mate - the mags really take me back to when I was young - some real gems in there!
Fiesta or Mayfair? Or perhaps Razzle

Not a technical explanation but try this. Start counting on the VERY first guitar note (not the high one which is the natural place to start). Count 1-2-3-4 for 8 bars with the guitar. The slide starts on 2 of the next bar and the note hits in at count 3 I think. By all means correct me if this is wrong but I just sort of feel it now but the above seems to explain it I hope. Steve

I bought one of these from bass direct about 3 weeks ago and have used it on about 4 gigs, 2 of which had very boomy wooden stages and it certainly made enough of a difference to my ears to justify the price and lugging it around. I will take it to every gig now. It didn't completely solve the boominess but it definately helped from my experiences to date. Steve

No Longer for sale. I bought this back in August and it is a lovely jazz. The nicest neck that I have played on a 4 string, feels sublime. This is a great bass for sure. I am only selling because I can't see anything replacing my GB spitfire for a long time and thats a 5 string and I don't need or ant a 4 string anymore particularly. There is a minor issue with fret buzz at the 5th fret on the E string which I will get sorted before this goes anywhere, just needs a decent setup which I will ensure happens. Details from previous sale with initial pics here http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=24224 Will get round to posting my own soon. I paid £1350 for this bass so grab a bargain. Steve EDIT: With regards to trades would be interested in any of the following: Stingray 5 with cash my way Lakland 5 with cash my way GB 5 with cash your way Celinder 5 with cash your way Small light amp head such as Markbass/Genz Benz with cash my way Berg HS2x10 cab with cash my way Combinations of the above!

Will keep you updated. Steve

There just has NOT been enough ERB hate recently
birdy replied to ARGH's topic in General Discussion
Still its better than dull everyday sh*t 4 string Bassplaying by unimaginative, plodding, dullards that wouldnt know the 12th fret if it slapped them.
I'll take the bait How do you define better? Would The Beatles have been 'better' or sold more records if Macca has played a 12 string? To my mind the ERB is a different instrument than a 4 or 5 string bass guitar and the owners, generally, have different goals, aspirations and views on what is 'good' and 'better'. I don't think there is a right or wrong in this. The ERB playing in the video is impressive but I bet he could have played most of it on a 5 string. How many of you ERB fans like this stuff just BECAUSE its played on an ERB? Not looking for an argument on this just stating my opinion. Its all music innit. -
