1. Thanks Paddy - that's very light and makes me even more interested
2. Simon was the first and only one to welcome me to the forum and we shared similar views on bass, music and life in general. He was very helpful with a great SOH, always unselfish and easy going. I have a rat logo he gave me on the headstock of my 50 year old Jazz bass. He gave it to me after he saw a picture of the bass, which is battered and 'customised' after years of abuse and he told me it's a 'rat' bass. His was the kindest comment I've ever had about the bass, which usually range from horrible to downright ugly. It's still my main bass and I think of Si every time I play it, which is nearly every day. I still miss him.
3. I would like to try the 1126 if it's possible to get it to north Wales.
4. It's more of a hike from me!...........but yes it is nice up there I won't get to try the TKS then, but I am interested in having a go sometime if they ever head southwards.
5. Thanks again, food for thought. I'll be in Alston this weekend, is that a long way from your location?
6. Thanks, the Big 15 doesn't sound right for me and I'm not keen on the Berg cabs I've tried - they're too middy and aggressive sounding for my taste. Which TKS cabs would you recommend for a very deep, clean old school reggae tone? I emailed Tommy with the same question and he recommended the 1156, but it's too big and heavy for me. He suggested the 1126 without the 6" speaker would give a similar tone, but needs more amp power to go as loud. I wonder how the S112s compare to the 1126, considering they are smaller, lighter and half the price?
7. How does the Big 15 sound in comparison to the S112 and H112, which driver does it use? I want very deep, clean bass, with no treble or upper mid in the tone.
8.
Absolutely - if anyone in the North East wants to give the 12/6, big 15 or small 12 a run out, let me know. I'll be sending them back to Tommy soon, unless he has other plans for them.
Is the big 15 the same as the H115 on the TKS web site?
9. Ordering a custom bass is a big risk no matter how many details you specify. The essence that a makes a bass 'the one' for you is invisible and irrational in many cases. Often, it doesn't reveal itself immediately and it can be found in the least expected place when you stop looking. I went through dozens of basses before realising I had 'the one' all the time. Good luck with the quest
10.
One needs to examine the source of one's desires
Best advice I've ever seen here or anywhere. Why do we think owning more stuff will make us happy?
11. Thanks chaps. It's a bit late to start treating the bass with care. It's been mistreated all it's life, including being set on fire and thrown off stage regularly by it's first owner. It was rebuilt in 1978 with a new fingerboard and body because the originals were so badly scorched. It is very battered and I've never taken great care of it in the 34 years I've had it. The pick ups are the loudest and deepest sounding of any passive bass I've played, including other pre CBS Fenders. Over the past few years I've bought a lot of Jazz basses, but none of them come close to the depth of tone and volume of this bass. Many of them have developed faults quite quickly, like dodgy output jacks, while my old faithfull with it's original '63 electrics has never missed a beat. It's in an ugly, heavy old beast, but still by far my favourite bass and I hope it continues to be as reliable for the next 34 years.
12. My Fender Jazz bass has it's original 1963 pick ups and they've never been rewound. It has been used regularly throughout it's life, with virtually no maintenance. Is it likely that the pick ups will fail soon and if so why?
13. Nige is a jolly nice chap as all agree - thanks for the irie knobs bro
14. The one in the video was for sale on here recently, don't know if it sold though - you could do a search. Mine came from the Leeds shop and cost £150 delivered - it's a cracker at any price.
15.
What I do regret is not taking that oppotunity to mention to the girls next door that I was often being kept awake by the noise of one of them having sex in a very loud and enthusiastic manner . Often it was getting to be after 4.AM when I eventually fell asleep exhausted where I sat with the glass placed against the adjoining wall still propped agaiinst my ear . 16. It's very important to get on with neighbours and even (perhaps especially) when they are unreasonable. I would apologise and try to make friends with them. Practise acoustically or through headphones and if you really feel the need to make unacceptable noise, find another place to live where you wouldn't annoy anyone.
17.
Are you talking about these guys? http://www.faridaguitars.co.uk/bass/
Yes, they were available exclusively through Dawsons, which is where I bought my FJB-6. They don't seem to stock the basses now, it might be worth asking if you're interested. Here's a review by our own allthumbs:
18. The CVs are made in a factory in China by a separate company. Their own brand is Farida and they are excellent quality, very well built instruments. I think the VMs are made in the same Indonesian factory that produces Cort, Ibanez and other brands. I sold my Mex Fender when I got a CV Jazz and I sold the CV when I got a Farida Jazz. The Farida is closer to a US Fender and it shows the quality available in Chinese instruments. I also have a VM Jazz and it is very good, but again not as good as the Farida.
19.
Routers arent included because a ) its an added expense for Mackie... and b ) if your mixer starts taking out other wifi services, Mackie isn't liable.
Obvious really, but it's not a big problem - just get a cheap router or don't use one at all. We played a gig last night with the Mackie rig and didn't use a router. The sound guy was on stage with us using the mixer to add dub effects, which was nice.
20. Be careful not to blow all your books off the shelves - it's loud! I downloaded the manuals before purchase to get an idea of what to expect, but it seems a bit mean not to include them in the boxes. You will need to download the iPad app and get used to it's functions. The special tool may be to prevent anyone nicking the i-Pad when you're not looking. It would have been nice if the router was part of the mixer, but if there was a problem with the router the whole mixer would have to go in for service. A router may not be included to save costs, because not everyone wants to use the mixer that way and a cheap second hand router should work fine. There are lots of tutorials on youtube etc. - keep us updated
21. It's on the iPlayer: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03gln7r/imagine..._Winter_2013_Jimi_Hendrix_Hear_My_Train_A_Comin/
22. This is very similar to the system we use. The pre sets for vocals and instruments are good starting points and the combination of gates, compressors, EQ and FX on each channel are very handy. I look forward to hearing how you get on Edit: We use a cheap drum mic from a T.Bone set from Thomman, it's the same drum mics we've used on all our albums and we're very happy with the sound.
