Thanks. What mods did you have done on yours? Pete
Nothing too radical- just some useful stuff for a workhorse bass! I've changed the original pickups for Nordstrand NJ4s, fitted a series/parallel toggle switch onto the control plate, and finally copper-shielded and star-grounded the electronics. I also stripped the original black nitro finish down to bare wood!

I just took delivery of Dave's Gallien-Krueger 1001RB-II from UPS this afternoon, and I'm very pleased with it so far! I found Dave to be a pleasant and honest chap to do business with- great communication from him throughout the deal. He was happy to supply extra photos/info when asked, and wrapped the goods very carefully for delivery too. He even suggested some settings to get me started with the amp- can't ask for more really! Thanks Dave, you're a star... Thoroughly recommended! P.S. Don't forget to leave me some feedback too mate!

Berg NV215 if I don't have to move it myself, or a Barefaced Vintage if I do!
Just personal experience with the pair of Ashdown Mini 4x8s I had 6 years ago. Fine indoors, especially in front of a wall. Useless outdoors in the middle of a stage. That's why I sold them.
I also used to run a pair of ABM Mini 48's a few years ago, and my findings were exactly the same! Couldn't handle lows at reasonable stage volume at all well IMO...

Any tips for gritty rock sound with short-scale bass?
Etienne replied to argle's topic in Amps and Cabs
Ashdown ABM heads are pretty easy to get hold of, and sound great with a Sansamp bass driver DI in front- with the Ashdown's own tube mixed in you can get some wicked grind, yet still have lots of fatness! I personally don't dig Ashdown's speakers though- I don't think they do the heads justice at all IMO, but you may think differently! Trace 4x10s sound great to me though- you can pick those up for very little at the moment! -
Anyone seen that guy in Amsterdam who does the football keep-ups on Leidseplein? He's great to watch and does some amazing tricks but he isn't the best player in the world. In the context of a team he's probably sh*t... I'd pick a player over a showman for my team/band any day.
He must have had the week off when I went out there a few months ago- saw a pretty good breakdance troupe though! Back on-topic, I personally prefer the work of Mr Michael Balzary to Wooten- he plays some great stuff on The Mars Volta's first album for those who aren't already aware! However, I believe that both these players deserve equal respect for their deep passion, both for bass and for music, and their proactive approach in inspiring young people to pick up the instrument for the first time (Wooten for his books and Boot Camps, Flea founding the Silverlake Conservatory, etc). That to me is worth more than setting up an imaginary pi$$ing contest based on technical ability!

Quick poll: Rounds or flats on a Fender Jazz?
Etienne replied to Clarky's topic in Accessories and Misc
Well broken-in rounds for me Clarky! I love the bite of roundwounds on a Jazz bass, but generally don't like the 'zinginess' of new strings (unless I'm playing stuff by Tool ). My hands don't really sweat that much when I play, so it takes a fair while before the strings feel dead to me. I can usually get 6-9 month's use out of a set of before needing to change. I also find that I get more bottom out of a worn-in set of strings (a new set only feels 'right' to me after 3/4 long gigs). I nearly always use nickelwounds though- Most stainless steel strings don't feel nearly as good to me under the fingers! -
Etienne, you're truly a gentleman! That'd be ace, I'll definitely take you up on it. I've just realised it's very nearly my turn for the Big One that's doing the rounds, so if you fancy it we could get them together and A/B 'em in a couple of weeks time. I'll give you a shout soon as I know it's coming our way
Great, count me in mate!

***SOLD TO RICH, PENDING PAYMENT! *** Hi Folks, I'm shortly about to take delivery of a Gallien Krueger head, so I'm putting my trusty Shuttle 6.0 up for sale! I bought it from Bass Direct back in February this year, and it has been a very reliable (and loud) gigging companion in that time- I'm after a change of sound, and simply can't afford to keep both this and the incoming G-K, as much as I'd like to! I've always run this at 8ohms into my Barefaced Compact- the power section is just ticking over with that load! The head is in great condition both inside and out- the only cosmetic issues are some minor scratches in the paint on the left and right sides of the chassis, where it's rubbed against something in my gig-bag- I've taken photos to show this. I still have the manual and all the original packaging too! For those of you unfamiliar with the Shuttle, here's an overview of the spec: -600W into 4ohms, 375W into 8ohms. -Variable-gain tube preamp (12AX7). -3-band EQ with semi-parametric mid sweep. -3 Signal Shape presets: L.F. Boost, Mid Scoop & H.F. Attack. -Built-in output limiter. -Full-functioned D.I. out (sounds great!). -Auxiliary & Headphone inputs (can be used without a speaker load- you can use it as a portable silent practice amp to jam along with your iPod! -Dual Speakon Outputs. -Effects Loop. -Muteable Tuner Out. -Input for (optional) footswitch. -Weight: 3.75 pounds(!) I'm looking for a firm £440 (including UK postage) for this- I will however knock a little bit off if the buyer collects! I'm based in Liverpool city centre. No offers please! PM me if interested- thanks for looking!
Wahey, the Northern Compact is creeping ever closer towards Liverpool, I might squuze it in before the year is out Really looking forward to having a blast on this, and the feedback so far is really encouraging. Alex, if you're ever up gigging in Liverpool, there's sure to be a pint with your name on it in return for this gentlemanly endeavour!
Mike, you're more than welcome to try out my Compact- you can borrow it for a rehearsal/gig one night soon when I'm not using it myself... get in touch!

I bought a GRAMMA Pad at the beginning of this year, and have used it ever since- it's become an indispensable part of my set-up now! Yes, it's undoubtedly expensive for what it is (and I must admit I was sceptical initially), but the concept most definitely works! The best thing about it for me is being able to get a consistently solid sound in lots of different venues quickly- it saves a lot of fiddling with the EQ to dial out problem frequencies IME. It's definitely worth a go, whether you buy, borrow or make your own!

All of 'What's Going On' by Marvin Gaye- but especially 'Right On' (track 7). Love the way it kicks in!
yep, it's definately a great amp - unfortunately i need to justify new purchases somehow and i really don't want to sell any of my other gear. you know how it is..
I certainly do! So what did you go for in the end? I'm very interested in this, but need to sell my Shuttle 6.0 first to get the cash together! EDIT: Just wanted to check- is the SKB case included in the sale?

Ah, so it was you that got in first then! I was in the queue just in case you didn't buy Steve's Compact today, but I didn't really expect it to hang around! As it happens, I sold on a pair of GS112's to get my own Compact... Don't get me wrong though, these little Aggies are seriously potent cabs (especially as a pair) and get the job done- I'm sure these will go quickly if you do sell them! Hope you enjoy your new purchase as much as I do mine, and if for any reason things don't work out, I'll have first dibs on it!

I met (and made an arse of myself in front of) Mani about 8 years ago in Liverpool whilst he was DJing in the student union bar. In my inebriated state, I took him aside and attempted several times to tell him "You're the man on bass!" whilst standing right in front of the PA. He couldn't hear a thing I said, quickly lost interest and walked off... On a happier note, I also met Michael Manring back in 2005 (I think) after his gig in Reading- he was the nicest guy you could ever wish to meet! I had a good chat with him and asked if he wouldn't mind me interviewing him for my uni final research paper. He said to get in touch and email him whatever questions I had... he was true to his word and replied with some really great answers too!
