1.
which one Etienne, i didn' see you today trav
Hi Andy, I was in the Liverpool branch! Hope you and yours are well BTW
2. I just took delivery of Eric's Barefaced Compact this morning (delivered in just 2 days by Royal Mail's Standard parcel service- very impressive!). It's exactly as he described it, and at a good price too! Great communication from him throughout the deal (via PM), packed the cab very securely and sent it out bang on time as agreed. Couldn't ask for more! Thanks mate! Etienne
3. Just played one of these this afternoon in Dawson's- tried it back to back against the standard Classic Vibe Jazz. I was very impressed with both of them! The JJ sig claims to have upgraded pickups compared to the CV, but I couldn't tell the difference between them to be honest! As others have said, it's a case of whether you like LPB (and James/Biffy) enough to pay the extra. The finish and playability of the pair I sampled was fantastic in both cases- I see what all the fuss is about with these! I gig with my Squier JV P-bass all the time, so the name on the headstock wouldn't put me off owning one. The weight of both was spot on too. Wish I could say the same for my boat-anchor US Jazz...
4. Hi Bobby, good to see you on here! Amplifier problems aside, I hope all is well... With a bit of luck, you'll be able to get this sorted out with minimal wallet damage- sorry I can't be of any assistance in diagnosing the problem! Which tech have you decided to go with by the way? Coincidentally, my friend and fellow bassist JJ Rio also had his Trace head blow up on him very recently, and needs to find a reputable repairer ASAP! ATB, Etienne EDIT: Just in case you haven't lined up a repairer yet, you could could give Gee Electronics a try. I haven't used them for ages, but they repaired and modified a Trace V-type hybrid head for me several years ago, and did a good job. They're on the Rocket industrial estate near the Parcel force depot (just off the M62 interchange).
5. Thanks Si, I'm glad you're happy with your new purchase!
6. Si just collected my Epiphone Jack Casady bass this morning, having agreed to buy it via PM/phone earlier in the week. I found him to be a thoroughly nice, straight-dealing bloke who does what he says, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to other Basschatters... Hope you enjoy the JC mate! Etienne
7. Unbelievably, this has provisionally sold ALREADY! Thanks Si, see you on Saturday morning!
8. I bought this from Andy Travis here on Basschat last November, having been GASing after one for most of the year! It's a superb example of this instrument (Andy made sure that he got a good one!)- it looks and sounds brilliant. I bought it to use with my new band, but to be honest I've been going back to my Squier JV P-bass more and more over the last few weeks, and this is just not getting played enough for me to justify keeping it. The full spec of this can be found on the web, but for those who don't know, here's the basics: *Standard 34" scale length with set neck construction. *Semi-hollow body with metallic gold top finish. *Passive low-impedance Electar humbucker in middle position. *CONTROLS: 3-way impedance switch (50K, 250K or 500K settings), master volume, master tone. *Gibson-style 3-point bridge assembly. I'll get some photos up in the next few days, but for now, you'll just have to take my word that this is in VGC throughout. There's just a tiny, barely noticeable ding in the lacquer on the top edge of the headstock, and some very light swirling in the finish on the back on the body, otherwise it's clean. The pickguard is currently removed, but can be very easily refitted with the supplied screws should you so desire. I agree with Andy that the bass looks better without it! I've strung it with D'addario Chromes flatwounds, which I think really suit the old-school character of this bass. The pickup in this is seriously powerful, and with the impedance switch, pretty versatile too. I tend to run it on the '250k' setting most of the time- it gives the bass a nice full sound, with more low end than a P-bass(!). You can get a nice vintage bark out of it too no problem- just dig in a bit more! The bass comes with the all-important Epiphone fitted hard-shell case & key, the pickguard & screws (of course!), and the original set of roundwounds that it came strung with. I'm looking for a firm £430 for this please. I'm based in Liverpool city centre. Collection is preferred , but shipping can also be arranged at additional cost... EDIT: NOW SOLD! Please PM me if interested, thanks for looking! Etienne
9. Sorry to hear you've been having trouble! I own a 1001RB-II and (touch wood) have had no issues with it so far. Yep, the fuses are a good place to start. I'm assuming here that you've already tried to use the amp since it happened, and that it's still lifeless... What happened exactly when it cut out? Did the amp feel excessively hot at the time, or were there any burning electrical smells coming from it?
10. Wow, that's one properly sorted Roscoe Beck there! I owned and regularly gigged a sunburst RBV for several years myself, during which time I pretty much came to the same conclusion with the extra string tree, electronics and scratchplate. Some really well-chosen mods here that no doubt vastly improve an already great bass. That replacement bridge looks SO much better than the clunky standard one- I bet it weighs half as much too! Good luck with the sale mate!
11. Yep! I'm in Aigburth, near Sefton Park.
12. I have got to try one of these out sometime soon... I'm intrigued! BTW, I noticed that the bassist from Friendly Fires was/is rocking out on a T-40 (you could see/hear it in action in last year's Glastonbury coverage on the Beeb... Great sound! Not one of you lot by any chance, is it?!
13. Eddie's a lovely bloke, a great player and excellent singer in a busy, hard-working band (I know because my girlfriend's dad is their keys player!). I personally think you should keep this mate (because it's ace and you'll miss it), but then again, I can understand that a nice old Rick would be very difficult to resist... Good luck whatever you decide to do! Et
14. That reminds me, I must submit a proper long-term review for my Compact in the New Year...
15.
How does the Big One sound in Scouseland?
I wish I knew! Mike still hasn't been in touch with me to pass it on, so I've missed the opportunity to use it on several gigs this month- I just played my final gig for 2009 last night. I have no gigs booked for January so far, so if/when he gets back to me, I'll tell him to pass it straight on to you mate. I was made redundant a few days ago, so I have more urgent priorities for the New Year than testing this out anyway...
16. I'm very impressed with my recently-acquired 1001RB-II. I gigged it back-to-back with my Barefaced Compact last night and Friday, and was loving the tone with my Jazz Bass! A great sound that sits well in the mix without lots of tweaking, and LOTS of power to put it out there! In fact, it sounds superb with all of my basses- my Sansamp BDDI and VT Bass haven't seen much action since the G-K arrived! Just wish I'd tried this amp out sooner...
17. I'm disappointed I must say... thought this thread was going to be about the most effective method of wrestling a skinny-stringer to the floor... Might actually be useful in this kind of situation!
18.
I too have been wondering about this! Who has it now and who's it going to next? Alex
It's still in the hands of Mike257 here in Liverpool at the moment as far as I know. I was ideally hoping to try it at a gig on December 12th (swapping my Compact with Mike for the weekend) but I know that Mike's had the Big One for quite some time already, and that there are other Basschatters waiting patiently for their turn... don't want to jump the queue! Let me know if anyone objects to me having a go next... if so I'll PM Mike and tell him to pass it straight on to the next person on the list (whoever that is).
19. Nice work Matski! I've got a big Squier-logo'd JV '57 P-bass, and it's killer. The necks on these are so nice to play...
20. I joined the G-K club quite recently when I bought my 1001RB-II head on here- I love it! I've finally found the tone I've been seeking with my Jazz Bass over the last few years, and my other basses sound fantastic through it too! Just wish I'd picked one up sooner...
21.
I have a Veillette Archtop bass arriving very soon. Unlined fretless 5 string. Can't wait!
Wow, that's a beauty!
22. Nobody's mentioned the Epiphone Jack Casady bass so far- a very worthy contender! I've just bought one 2nd-hand, and I am seriously impressed with its gutsy sound! Can't wait to hear it with the flatwounds I plan to throw on this coming week... Just reread the first post Sibob- these are available in Sunburst, but you'd probably have to buy new to get hold of one! They don't come up that often, even in the most common gold top finish... well worth it though IMO!
