1.
what are they?
Here's a thread. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/80045-auralex-gramma-pad-marvellous/page__hl__gramma%20pad
2. I'm a natural sceptic like yourself Daz. I hung back getting one until I saw one going second-hand and then I jumped in and bought it. It does genuinely make a difference. Even the drummer commented I'd like to know if a home-made one is just as good, so keep us informed please! I know that I'm such a slow bodger at making things that I would really gain much by a DIY approach.
3.
I'm sure it's because I'm not picking perpendicular to the strings, more on an angle, but how do I fix that - any tips?
What helped me with this one was raising the bass by shortening the strap. This way my picking-arm elbow was lower in relation to the bass and I had more flexibility in the wrist. Could just be my natural limp-wristedness though.
4.
Me too, posted a thread about this tone recently and am now about to add it to my repertoire.
I saw it! It inspired me to 'pick' it up. It's all your fault that my drummer said 'sounds too f****ing Nashville to me'. He is a miserable git though. He makes George Harrison seem like Timmy Mallet.
5. I've just started going the other way! After playing fingerstyle since about 1974 I've just started experimenting playing with a pick. I've always done a bit on guitar too, so (trying to do)the technique isn't new to me. I'm loving that 'clicky' sound with a roll of felt under the strings by the bridge too. I'll give you a wave as our trains pass going in opposite directions!
6. Second gig of the weekend last night. I was the bassplayer in the backing group for singer-songwriter Gill Battison. The gig, promoting her CD 'Journey' was at the Beeston Free Church. This is modern building right by the Nottingham University campus. So far, so normal. What made it different was that it was a 'ladies only' event. So apart from 3 of us in the band and the soundman, the other 200+ were female. It was rather strange, but not unpleasant! At least there was no queue for the Gents at the interval.... All went well apart from Gill launching off into one of her songs in a different key to the one we'd practised. All part of the job My Barefaced Bigone on a Gamma Pad made a very satisfying sound.
7. Played last night as one half of the regular Blues/Americans duo. We have a casual residency at a local pub who, about once a month, let us use their function room for a free gig. We get nowt for it for but we've got a lot of other work through the exposure and we try out new material there. Anyway, last night they'd got an engagement party in the function room (or engorgement party as my brother calls them). So, it was the old 'under the dart board in the bar scenario'. By the end of the night we'd got a significant wodge of the party-goers out in the bar singing along to 'walking in Memphis', so -result. It's going to be different tonight. I'm part of the backing group for a female singer-songwriter. She's doing a 'ladies only' evening and apart from me and the guitarist everyone there will be female. Interesting.
8. Jack Bruce is often a 'one finger' player too. I recall some mention of an Indian sitar player's technique that he favours. Maybe another BCer has heard more about this.
9. Two of my favourites that I always come back to. Humble Pie - Rockin' the Filmore Robert Cray Band - Authorized Bootleg, live in Austin Texas
10.
Point me to where I can have a listen please
Tim's a modest guy, so I'll do it for him. Try here - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Every-Dirty-Mirror-Case-Hardin/dp/B005J4NY3W Well worth your time to check it out.
11. I've noticed this at a church I play at. I've always put it down to the frequency of the note matching the natural resonance of the room somehow. It was a bit disconcerting at first, as it was for you.

hi

Welcome to Nugget World. I hope you enjoy the forum.
13. Mixed. Playing at church, attendances have gone up. The secular gigs have probably been similar in number (2 a month average), but I would say attendances there have gone down. The latter have been in pubs, playing a mixture of original/covers/traditional material
14. 'What's with the attitude?' 'Well it fell of the policeman's head, and he's a well trained dog' Eye-thank-yoo
15. I'll keep my eyes and ears open in Derby/Notts area.
16. Doesn't this sort of thing make you glad that YouTube, Facebook etc wasn't around when you were a kid? It does me. I've got my brothers and sisters to remind me what a t**t I was. Thank God there's no video evidence.
17. I've got a Ritter double gig bag. I've been very happy with it. Sufficient padding and plenty of external pockets for 'stuff'.
18. Welcome - at last!
19. I think really it's hats off to you for recognising this. Sometimes it takes a jolt and a reality check for us get the push to improve. It might feel a bit uncomfortable, but you wouldn't really want to be one of those smug gits who think they've got it all nailed would you? I'm sure you're being hyper-critical of yourself too. A last thought. Those classy and subtle basslines he was playing. Have you considered that maybe he didn't compose them?
20. Welcome Bluejay.
21. Have a bump. I've got one of these. I use it as part of my church rig and it does the biz, week in, week out. Someone will get a bargain here. The manual used to be down-loadable. If not, I think I've still got the pdf on my PC for whoever buys this.
22. I've got a double gig-bag. They're great for hiding all sorts of things. A mate of mine, a guitarist tried this one. After promising his wife that he wouldn't buy anymore guitars he found he still had that 'old itch that can't be scratched'. Being a crafty devil he got round his promise by buying the component parts separately and assemblying the guitar himself. His claim was that he hadn't bought a guitar, he'd bought bits of one. I don't think they spoke to each other for about a week when she worked it out.
23.
You should have popped in for a cuppa after your trudge up the Tor Everyone is dressed up for Halloween at the moment. In other words exactly the same as every other day A
Cheers for that. Likewise if you're ever up my way (Derby). The drive back up the M5 was horrendous. Luckily we'd got the new Tom Waits 'Bad as Me' to listen to.
24. I was down in Glasto' last Thursday. It rained all day and I saw nothing half as beautiful as that.
