Man, that is so Malcolm MacLaren !
I've decided to take that as a compliment! -
Hi Alan, Yes, I know Denby Bottles but not your church. I used to cycle or drive up to Ripley and back each day in a previous job, and the wife works in Heanor. Most of my church playing is at St. Nicholas in Allestree (near the university and Markeaton park). The most regular place my secular band plays is The Joiners in Quarndon. Do you go to any open-mics your way?

Hi Al, Welcome to a fellow Derberian. Where do you play?

Some friends got married at the weekend and they asked for a band to play the music during the service. The keyboard player wore a similar jacket to mine. We were nicknamed 'The Biege Brothers'. Luckily there was plenty of Champagne to drown the shame. -
I've just seen this. Sorry I'm a bit late. I use a piece of carpet. It's an off-cut from the one we had put in the living room. The LM III sits nice and snug on top and the carpet, although not fixed at all, stays on the cab when the Roqsolid cover goes over the top. All for free and it seems to work. The cab is a Barefaced BigOne so there are some big rumbles to cope with. My carpet is a neutral beige (chosen to mask pet sick stains etc) but you could have curry house style patterns or whatever. Even choose a carpet to suit the gig!
There's are a few threads like this already so it might be worth looking at those as well. While laptops etc might be better specified it's the size and ease of use that makes a tablet a better bet IME, and battery in the iPad seems to last forever so that's one thing less to worry about on stage.
It feels like an attack of 'pooter GAS is coming on........
We've got a few of these for the band - http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0055CL5XE/ref=asc_df_B0055CL5XE7735085?smid=A35ATNU92FJ7LH&tag=googlecouk06-21&linkCode=asn&creative=22218&creativeASIN=B0055CL5XE
Looks great, thanks for that. So you find the iPad or similar does the business?

A great thread. I've been thinking about asking a similar question. However, is a 'tablet' screen big enough to use as an electronic version of sheet music/music stand? I play a lot from sheet music or chord charts and the ability to use .pdfs or similar on a screen would be great. There's the problem of how and where to mount it so it can be seen, but that's another thread really. So, would I be better off getting a power-book type device or would a tablet suffice?
Yesterday I was goofing around with my Squier VM P-bass, and when I had to move some stuff, I was turning my bass upside down. I could hear something loose tumble around inside the bass, anyone ever experienced that before? Any suggestions where to look, and maybe what it is?
Is everything working as it should? In other words, does it have any relation to a new, or old, fault?
Not got much experience with flats but have just strung my P bass up with a set of D'Addario Chromes. Very pleased, plenty of oomph and to my ears a decent level of brightness.
Ha ha! Now I've got that same set to try courtesy of Mr Gary Mac!

Now then, if you're feeling really adventurous....... A friend of mine has moved out to Norfolk and he's getting heavily into building a 'scene' in that area, particularly Lowestoft. (The most easternly town in the British Isles I think....). Anyway, if you message him on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/#!/jonathanmarriottmusic He'll probably be able to make some suggestions.

I've just bought a set of D'Addario XL chrome flat wound strings off Gary. He was selling them for charity. He didn't wait for my cheque to clear which is very trusting of him. One of the good guys.
Actually it was this morning, 5.15 am to be precise. So the morris team I play with (Rackaback) went and greeted the May Day dawn at the Black Mill on Beverley Westwood. Considering the hour I reckon 60 or so punters wasn't a bad turnout. First time they've had a double bass there so photos were taken (including the local paper). We actually managed to see the dawn before the clouds rolled in and we were finished before the rain came. A fun time was had by all. Steve
That sounds brilliant. Any chance of posting the pictures or putting up a link when they appear?

Welcome! Have fun. We're all boys at heart.

One of the first 'rock' concerts I ever saw, Camel supporting Stackridge. Probably be about 1972. What a pair of bands.

I play in a church band and up until now we've had a PA for vocals and used separate back-line amps/cabinet/combos for instruments. Luckily, we've got a new PA system (which I'm helping to install this week) which will allow everyone to play through it, including me on electric bass. The budget didn't stretch to DI boxes (but it did for monitors, I'm glad to say!) so I've got to sort that out for myself. I have an 'old style', unprogrammable Sansamp DI Box, which has been fine in other settings. However, as I'll be able to sell-on my cheap and cheerful rig I leave in church I'll have some cash and GAS that I can use on upgrading my DI. What I'd like if possible is a single box that can DI and includes a tuner. The ability to run in phantom power from the PA would be good, but I think most DI boxes will offer that. If it matters, I will be playing active and passive basses and sometimes with five strings. I'm not really a user of effects, so that's not a great consideration. Any tips anyone can give will be gratefully received.
How would it compare to the neck on the US Jazz? less chunky, more?
Hiya, I'm a bit late to the party on this one but anyway. I've got a Japanese Fender Precison 1957 reissue. It looks very similar to the photograph in your first post, right down to the gold scratch plate. I also have a Japanese Fender Jazz 1962 reissue. The neck on the Precision is noticeably bulkier, both in width and depth. So, if you haven't tried one of the Precsion necks yet I think it's a good idea to do so. Some people just don't seem to get on with the wider necks.

I didn't go last night, but some friends did. It sounds very much like the old joke is true. 'You play this town twice in your career, once on the way up and once on the way down'

Whilst I agree with the comments about preparation and practise, I think in the end you should make a jump and go for it. For me, I know that if I waited until I felt 'really ready' for things I wouldn't have ever done much. After all, what's the worst that can happen? If you see an opportunity, take it.
