Hi Looper. I've got US, Mexican and Japanese Fenders. Based on them, and also what I've tried out but not owned my own preference is for Japanese made. Every time. The QC is just the best of Fender's IMO. Also, to echo Ras52, don't rule out Squiers. Seriously. I have a Squier Vintage Modified Jazz, and it's great. I often gig with it.

Hiya, I've got a Yamaha BBN4F III. Passive 4-string fretless with lined fingerboard. Great build quality and I'd personally recommend anything from Yahama. The model is discontiued now, but I picked mine up for a couple of hundred. I don't know where you're based but you're welcome to come and try mine. Just be aware, based on previous posts of a similar nature you're likely to get replies telling you that you don't need a lined fingerboard yadda yadda...even though that wasn't the question you were asking.

I've got an Epiphone Embassy 5-string with them fitted. They'd been fitted by a previous owner ( who's not a basschatter) so I don't know how they compare to the originals. However, they do give a neutral but slightly 'woody' sound to my ears. They do the job just fine.

Hi David, Welcome. I play pretty much every day too. Making sure there's an instrument out and easy to pick up is key to this I think. I do a few minutes before I leave for work in the morning. If I had to get a bass out of a case to do that I don't reckon I'd bother. I usually have at least one 'performance' a week to prepare for (church band plus a couple of other outfits), so I always set-lists of songs to learn and practise. Because of that I don't spend as much time on theory and technique as I'd like. But on the other hand, personally, I don't think I'd play much bass if I wasn't playing live with it. I'd probably go back to g*****r or play more banjo. Len

I know it might sound like a cop-out and not be your preferred route anyway, but what about doing a book on several bass players? A chapter on each perhaps, with maybe a compare/contrast element. 'Jazz Bass Giants'

[/quote] Yes! Great stuff. I've often thought that a bass banjo with a resonator body would work as an acoustic bass guitar alternative. A lot of us having tried an acoustic bass guitar and finding that they're too quiet 'unplugged' to be of any use in a band.

Training your ears to recognise intervals (eg. one semi-tone up then one full tone down etc.) will pay dividends in being able to learn parts by ear. Almost anyone can do it, it's just practise. Then you won't need tabs. I sometimes wonder if crappy tabs are posted on the 'net in a lame attempt to avoid copywright infringements.

[/quote] Exactly. Most people listening to ensemble music often don't know which sound comes from which instrument. And frankly, don't really care. The sound of the band is either good or bad.

Welcome Steve. It sounds like you do some interesting stuff. I had to face the outdoor acoustic bass problem for ocsasional jobs. Instead of going for a DB (I'd have to get a new car!) I got a small combo amp that will run on batteries. It's a Roland Micro Cube and you can even carry it on your shoulder like a man-bag When you say a border morris team, is that the border between East Yorkshire and England?

Yes, of course. Everyone's replaceable, but not always replicable. Graveyards are full of people who thought they were indispensible.
