Yup that sounds good to me, easier to get to then cardiff at least I'd offer to organise, but I've yet to go to one, and have no idea what's involved...

If you're near london, take a trip to the bass gallery, a couple hours playing around in there will give you a solid knowledge base . alternatively, I've heard great things about bassdirect in warwick, in fact they've got a couple things I want to try out sometime.

clicked the link, briefly saw it before getting a 'this item has ended' page, which bought up related items. One of these was a 1/4 size double bass, surely that's just a cello?

watched the first half before lunch, was loving it. Just came back to stick it back on, had to reload it, and now it says 'this video is private, sorry.'

At the moment, my main practice has been playing scales and arpeggios over drones on my DB. Not really frustrating, as I don't mind getting the odd note wrong, but it's definitely been helping my fretboard knowledge. If I got overly worked up and frustrated whilst practicing, I wouldn't enjoy it, would do less, and therefore be a worse player overall. Perhaps it comes down to how annoyed you get at your own mistakes, as I just accept them as an inevitability when practicing.

I think I mentioned it to a mod before, but I still think that earplug thread should be in the general bass section where more people would read it. Surely such an important issue should be given maximum visibility on the forum.

A bit of dub/reggae is always good. Give a listen to the album Below the Bassline, by Ernest Ranglin, I spent about ten minutes yester on just one phrase from a song, trying to get the note volumes nice and controlled. I'd advise learning about walking basslines too, it'll completely change your approach to writing lines. This last one will be greatly accelerated if you find any kind of local jam night (preferably jazz based, even if it's currently not your thing), as it'll immediately give you a great wealth of experience from playing with a multitude of people.

A bit of backround might help. How major is the album, what kind of sales range is it expecting, 100's. 1000's, 10,000's, and what kind of budget do you think they're spending on it? The same goes for yourself, what's your musical training and experience? p.s. I have no idea as to the answer, I just think those points might be helpful for those who do

I find that my style reflects my frame of mind (to a point). If i start getting anxious, my playing gets more uptight and jumpy, which does work in some cases. Alternatively, if i force myself to over relax, and really mentally chill, then I seem to then manage that laid back feel in the playing. Or at least that's what it feels like to my ears, haven't really done much recording

Sounds like the bass guitar equivalent of eating a veggie burger with cutlery carved from the bones of innocent lambs. One just defeats the point of the other.

If you're interested in playing jazz, then i'd suggest just getting a copy of The Real Book, and just go along with the tunes you like out of there. There're some quite nice straight forward ones, such as All Blues.

Have you considered in the difference in distribution between who can afford buy boutique gear, and those that play the majority of gigs? I have various mates in bands at uni, and I don't think any of us can afford to spend more than a few hundred on a bass. I for one saved up several years ago, and have been perfectly happy using my s/h spector rebop ever since.

I'd say it's partly the motivation for the notes/method you're choosing. If you play some crazy fast run because you think that's what suits the song best, then it's music, but if you're doing it just because you're able to, then maybe not so much.

Isn't thinking you're rubbish part of the learning process? No matter how good you are, once you realise there's a next stage to acheive, and what the vital aspects are, any deviation from that and you'll think you played awfully.

If it's in a sealed packet, it should be fairly indefinite. The change in a strings sound over time (on your bass) is a combination of fatigue from vibrating, and a build up of gunk from your hands. therefore sitting still and untouched in a packet should have a marginal effect. n.b. this is from the theoretical science standpoint, there might be a factor i'm not considering. I've also made the assumption you haven't taken them out the packet, played about with them, then put them back, as this would introduce a bit of moisture required for rust to form.
