1.
In the context of a good song, it can work wonders
Yeah but how many players have managed that? You could probably count them without taking your socks off.
2. Looks a lot like my ply DB which apparently was a Musima factory job. So yeah 50s/60s Germany I guess?
3.
Sorry to hear about your pet Mel, doesn't make any difference what animal it is, they soon become part of your family.
+1. We inherited a goldfish from a housemate who was moving abroad and he's turned out to be surprisingly attentive and affectionate! We've had him 12 years now and his eyes are getting a bit cloudy but he's still going strong despite jumping out of his tank twice (once while we were out!).
4. Ernie McKone is the unknown soldier of acid jazz. His stuff for Galliano was usually very understated, the stuff he did for Push before that was more adventurous but nobody ever heard it. Great player, been one of my faves for 20 years.
5. Do you have a photo of the back of the body, or better still of the neck pocket? This looks a lot like my old Satellite jazz but mine was plywood.
6. My first bass was one of these. Would be interested to see photos, especially of the back of the body.
7. No idea. I love it as an envelope filter, I've been using it a lot in my current band. I don't want to sound patronising but have you got plenty of treble content in your bass signal for it to play with? If you're rolling the tone pot down the effect won't be very obvious.
8. I thought it was an interesting article. Guess I should've spent more time working out what I didn't like about it.

10. MOR Music in York do. Not sure if they can sell you a Lakland though I've never seen one in there.
11. Impressively done but mega chintzy. My gran would've liked it.
12.
If you have less that £3K, everyone will tell you what you are buying is likely to be a piece of crap. The difference between a £300 piece of crap and a £1500 piece of crap is subjective but they are both crap. So I figured, well, if they are all crap, what can possibly go wrong? So I bought one from Gedo Musik (£1400ish) and it was fine, got me playing an gigging and recording as a double bass player. I am not even remotely gassing for a new/better one
My experience was a bit different. I bought a used laminate bass in a private sale for £500. It was a good starter bass (plays easily, difficult to damage!) and I still have a use for it (busking) but the sound is a bit lifeless. Loud but boomy. So I did want a better bass and I got a carved bass from Gedo Musik a couple of months ago (it was reduced so I got a great deal) and it's so much more satisfying to play. Plus I can hear my intonation a lot more easily!
13. Lots of low-budget guitars are actually pretty good. I got an SX strat for £60 in a local shop, swapped out the pickups for another £20, it's a nice little player.
14. Your band will go down a storm at the Hi-Fi. Haven't been for years but it's a good venue with a friendly regular crowd.
15. Sometimes if the pickup is too high you can get distortion. Try lowering it a bit and see if it helps.
16.
What are your opinions on the BMS Classic vs BMS XO? Si
The XO model just doesn't sound as good. If you plug both in side-by-side you won't want the XO model. Also the XO is more difficult to use because the sliders are shorter, and the taper on the Rate slider doesn't seem to be very appropriate. Also the sliders move more easily, which I think is a bad thing. But most of all it's the sound - the old one simply sounds better. I sold my first one to buy the XO, but quickly sold the XO and bought another old one.
17. IIRC the older analogue delay had 1 second of delay available and was a bit cheaper than this 800ms delay. I'm sure it sounds amazing but I'm sure the old one did too.
18. I use gStrings to tune my double basses. Really handy to have a tuner in your pocket if you play acoustic instruments much.
19. Sustain is useful if you're in the habit of triggering effects, or playing long notes that you then modulate with tremolos or filters or whatever. I've had to change basses when recording in the past because I couldn't get some of the notes I needed out of the bass I was using. I agree with BRX - it's way better to have sustain and add muting if you don't want so much of it, rather than not having enough sustain and trying to add more.
20. I do have one bass I'm a bit precious about - my '91 Thumb, because in 1990/91 I really wanted a Thumb. I do love it still, and I'm not so precious that I don't gig it, but I would have to think long and hard before selling it. I have one other bass guitar - a Squier Jazz which I keep because I like to have a bass strung with flats. And two double basses: One indestructible laminate for street busking, and a carved bass for when I need something that sounds good. I do still get a hankering for a 5-string sometimes. I think eventually I'll buckle and buy a Yamaha BB1025x, but I'm resisting quite well so far.
21. We've got a drummer who is also a very good hand percussionist. He often just uses a Roland Handsonic and does great stuff with it. He uses a Cajon sometimes too. We also have an MC who is a talented beatboxer and we have a turntablist too who provides beats sometimes. Lots of options! Wish I could get them all to rehearse more often. :/
22. The O.S. sounds excellent, has a massive pile of options for manipulating the filter (it's only missing external control [exp. pedal / CV]), 50-patch memory, great fuzz, lots of mixing options, the VCO tracking is a bit too quirky to be useful but IMO if you use filters a lot it's a cracking pedal. The main complaint people make about it is that it's difficult to program, and to be fair the interface is fairly arcane but the manual is excellent. And personally I would rather have the fiddly interface in a small pedal than a massive pedal with a better interface. The O.S. and the EHX Bass Micro Synth (the older 24v model, not the new 9.6v one) are my favourite 'synth' pedals. The BMS just sounds enormous.
23. I had a G5 for a while but didn't find it too useful. The filter controls are badly designed and the whole thing sounded a bit woolly due to the way they generate the sounds. I also only really liked one sound on it.
24. You can like 'Debaser' all day, but if she didn't spend years in her bedroom learning to slap then she's not a proper bass player and doesn't deserve recognition.
25. I suppose with something like that you have to live with it to work out whether you can live with it. I've got a Galaxy S2 at the moment and while it doesn't feel too big it's a stretch to reach the whole screen with my thumb when using it with one hand. I can imagine it's impossible to do that with the Note. I suppose it depends how you use it though. All that said, the massive screen would be nice to have.
