A dub cover of Sabbath's 'Iron Man' with the vocal melody played on trumpet and trombone.

Trans teal is the ugliest colour ever used on a bass. You had a lucky escape. As for unlined fretlesses, it wouldn't take you that long to adjust.
Though someone did tell a tale here about having to abandon the rented van having driven it into a river and put bullet holes in it...
If that was our rented van you're talking about then we didn't abandon it - we towed it back to the rental place on a trailer in the end. I suppose we temporarily abandoned it when it was on its roof in the river, but we did get it towed out, and before daylight, and the cops never knew it had been crashed.
A polish chap who's been to a few of our gigs some time apart came up to us after a gig. "This time the drums sounded much bigger. You're bass is ****ing heavy now." Looks at guitarist speaks in monotone "You. You were the same as last time."
I love this one. It wouldn't be so funny if I didn't get to give him an eastern European accent in my head, so thanks for that detail.

Technology And Music...Good Or Bad?
thisnameistaken replied to Pete Academy's topic in General Discussion
I do find a lot of modern records a bit boring to the ear, but if there's a silver lining it's that live music by comparison sounds even more exciting. The hard part of course is getting people to gigs. -
Anyone seen the drummer at the wrong gig? Or that Korean transvestite?
I tend to think that if you want to do a track and you don't have the tools that it needs then think again.. but to kick in a pedal and 'con' people is tacky and if they are sussed... they deserve all the stick they might get.
I've used effects on vocals before, not so much live but for special effects on recordings, if you're using it creatively then fair enough. But pitch correction is not only a lame practise but usually sounds bad too. Even if you can't hear the software at work you can still hear too much of that over-perfect glossiness and not enough of the voice. I've sung harmony in every band I've ever done and if there was a part I couldn't sing I simply wouldn't sing it. If a digitised correction genuinely sounds better than your vocal then you shouldn't be singing. Get some vocal lessons or work a bit harder on your performance.

When I was a kid I shared a bedroom with an older brother who was a big ELO fan and I can probably still remember all the words. Some of the rockier tunes I don't like these days, but there's plenty of other stuff I do like.
-
Hate autotune, also hate digital harmonies. A human voice singing in tune sounds good, a voice that has been corrected doesn't - it gets very tiring to listen to. Same goes for harmonies. Avoid. And if you can't do the vocals you want with the band you've got then you're out of luck.

I think I've mentioned Mark Bryson on here a few times in the past, I really rate him as a bassist.

Korg G5 ToneWorks Synth Bass Processor

I had a USA Jazz from the early '90s once and it was a - pardon my French - ****ing horrible instrument. Probably the worst bass I've ever owned. At the very least I expect bass guitars to be better than that one. Korean Squiers have not let me down so far.

Funky Eleanor Rigby Featuring Victor Wooten
thisnameistaken replied to Pete Academy's topic in General Discussion
Are you suggesting that this version is about a chick named Eleanor who's bumping uglies with Father Mackenzie? -
I thought it was the recording at first, the way the bass seems to have so much mechanical sound to it and not enough note, it sounded like the setup was too low and/or the thing was miked too close to the board or something. It sounds good when he isn't soloing but I can't listen to the solos, which is a bit of a shame really!

I want to hear them do Radiohead's 'Lucky'. -

Oh dear. At least he's not covering The Smiths. Yet. -
Get off my bassline, keyboard player!
thisnameistaken replied to aerodyne precision's topic in General Discussion
The one time our keyboard player started plonking out an unimaginative bass part, I turned on my pitch shifter, a gated fuzz, a filter and a sample rate reducer and started doing some synth leads. I was originally trying to make a point but in the end I was fairly happy with it until the guitarist told us both to stop ****ing about... -
I would love to be able to play like that. Must get back on with learning to read first though. :/

DB or EUB for me as a first timer?
thisnameistaken replied to philparker's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Awesome man. I've had DBs for about two and a half years now and I still can't walk through my dining room without stopping to noodle on one. I suppose you could call that addictive. -

Does anyone like their bass? Really?
thisnameistaken replied to lowdowner's topic in General Discussion
I've got one bass that I really like but still there's probably one bass I would consider trading it for if I found one - a 5-string version of the same bass of the same vintage. Never say never and all that. It's a sweet bass though, I don't know if the 5 would be as nice. -
Online reviewers who slap! Pet hate!
thisnameistaken replied to lefrash's topic in General Discussion
I think a lot of these reviewers have trouble finding a band who will tolerate them.
