The wider flatter blades resist turning.

Some resonances will have a dampening effect others an additive effect so these things may affect other physical characteristics such as sustain etc. Now that may sound far fetched and trying to blind with science gobbledygook but don't under estimate the effects that these sympathetic vibrations and resonances can have on the complex vibrations of the string. Here's a subtle example. The housing of the clock mechanism isn't moving but one of the weights picks up the vibrations from the mechanism and the pendulum and starts to move in sympathy with it... [/quote]This is degenerating into a Tonewood debate. You are right that the materials have some affect on how the instrument sound but it is small on solid body bass. -

[/quote]There is not a lot of difference in the real world performance of the Beyma SM212 and the Emmy Kappalites. The main difference will be the characteristic Emminence peak in the 2K region. If you want it flat the Beyma is probably a better choice, especially as he is building one of BFM's Simplex cabinets, not a Greenboy design.

The problem is that everyone needs something different from a cab and whilst in the early days BF were great HiFi cabs, the new additions with the 10s mean they can do the lot. TKS also get a lot of love as do many of the Boutique US makers. The main thing about Barefaced is that they put their money where their mouth ( or is that port ) is with their sale or return policy.

I am not sure but I guess the use something like the old GB7 tuners from Gotoh. The GB7 is no longer made but a good replacements can be had fro Warwick at Thomann,

It is that difference in weight/density that makes a mockery of the whole "tone wood" debate. It is the density of the wood that adds a tiny amount to the sound not the actual species.

The bass tha Rhys shows seems to correspond to the wiring diagram posted at the start of the thread. It should be easy to put it back to stock wiring but you may be left with a spare hole. -
I have bought loads of irons over the years but keep going back to the Antex. One of mine is like trigger's broom, New element new tips, only the handle is original but it must be 40 years old.

OK Have checked things out and I like the LD Systems and the Alto (same group as Numark BTW). The Alto quotes range as 100M and that is very good but seems to need to be ordered everywhere and seems out of stock. I have to admit if I were buying I would probably go for the Alto. The Sennheisers now on eBay are really overpriced (for us anyway). We have decided to wait until the end of the season (end April) and get some new ones in, and do some testing on a sale or return basis. I will report back then.

You beat me to it Charlie, stared writing this last night but fell asleep. There is a clone of the Cornish. Known as the Fairy Dust, there are Veroboard/stripboard layouts for this as well as a PCB kit (excluding enclosure) available from MKelec.com. Cost inc shopping would be about £15 from the USA. -

I had a pass today so I spent the whole afternoon at Absolute Music in Poole. I was having a look at the basses, as you do, and the kind young man asked if I would like to try anything (ooh et missus). I decided to try out a MM Sub Ray 4. Never played an MM type so; First impressions. Nice bass for the price nice tone preamp works well nice neck shape. The downsides were? The strings would make good nut files, rough as you know what. The action. Higher than Poole Bridge. Almost unplayable. I realise that setups change but the relief looked fine by eye but the bridge saddles were way too high. Way over 1/8" You could argue that Absolute should have set it up before putting it on demo but they have about 70 based and 200 odd guitars on demo. It would take a tech all year just to set up all those. So surely the factories can make a better fist of setting up guitars and basses and even really cheap basses often have Daddario stings factory fitted. Remember the Sub is over £300. With all the love given to Harley Bentons, their MB4 at about £100 may be a better buy.

Thanks for the advice I have an old plug in system from Samson that works well but unfortunately it is illegal now. I will check eBay for your recommendations.
