1. I have just received two instrument cables in the post. They are exactly as requested and really look the part. Can't wait to use one at my next gig on Saturday. They were made up and delivered in a very short space of time and at a very reasonable price. Having also met Dave a while back in person, I can vouch that he's a top fellow and would heartily recommend his services.
2.
'Disgusted of Gosforth'
Ha ha! Gosforth? Poshing it up? I remember when you were Hacked Off Of Harlough Green! All the best, Bawdry of Birtley (formerly).
3.
A view of the bridge area would help so that I can see if the (G) string is top-loaded or through body.
Whoops! Just laughed a bit TOO loudly in the office there! Ha ha, "bridge area"!
4. As I posted similarly in a recent thread, I had this with a low B string on a set of Labella flatwounds. I played the bass at a rehearsal and then a gig within the space of 2 weeks and then the string core snapped mid gig. I put another string on, and it was fine. Could be as simple a fix as that. I hope your new set works!
5.
Maybe this video might sway you
Jake, Undoubtedly he is a very good technician of the bass, just not for me. it doesn't mean he's not good, just not my kind of player to watch. I'm sure one day I'll hear something and go "wow! who is that?" and it will be him, but it hasn't happened so far. This clip didn't work for me either, but then again I guess I'm just not into banjo-jazz!
6. Can I play devil's advocate for a second? I have met people with genuine dyslexia, and I feel for them in the same way Jimmy has been complaining. I know, from friends that have dyslexia, although in exams they receive extra time to compensate, they hate the embarassment of being "singled out" in front of class etc in these situations. However, there is another side to this coin, and that is as someone myself who has a better than average ability at spelling and grammar, I hate the fact that English appears to be heading down the "text speak" road where people who are so desperate to say something on their MSN chat or Facebook status are too lazy to punctuate properly and check their spelling. I know you will tell me this is evolution and there's nothing I can do to stop it. You''re probably right, but I'm dreading the future for our beautiful language! There are people I know and have known when challenged on their terrible spelling, punctuation and grammar that will hide behind the dyslexia banner even though they're not dyslexic at all. These are the people that in my opinion spoil it for genuine sufferers and cause the general attitude that many are "just lazy". I will admit Jimmy, when I read one of your posts earlier today, my first impression that it was someone who was typing in text speak and just couldn't be a**ed to type properly. I apologise to you (even though I would have never been the type to say anything) and "kudos" to you for having the stones to challenge my, and undoubtedly others' opinions of you. Good luck to you, and welcome to the forum! P.S. I realise you probably don't think there was any need for this post, but the subject is something close to my heart and happy to see discussed. P.P.S. After I said "better than average ability", just watch all the pedantic types pick holes in my own spelling, grammar and punctuation now!
7. Victor Wooten has always been a "I see why people like him, but not for me" kind of guy, this has not changed my opinion I'm afraid. Clever with the tuning it back up thing I guess, but didn't like the sounds inbetween! Obviously I'm sure others will like it, just my personal opinion!
8. This might be a long shot but..... I had a set of Labella flats where the low B just wouldn't ring, and almost sounded muted when played, although it felt ok when plucking. I was convinced the new bass/pickups I had just bought and put them on was cr*p, until about 2 weeks later when the string core snapped. The string itself still looked intact! I got another string, and it was perfect! From what I hear on here, you are quite likely to get the odd dodgy flatwound in every few packs from Labella. That's the only one I've had and it hasn't put me off them. I'm sure you're about to tell me you've already replaced it several times, but I thought it worth a mention as another possibilty....
9. I don't know if it helps, but a few years ago I used to use Ashdown roundwound strings which had that colour silks (see my avatar). A lot of people on here said they were cheap s**t, but I liked them. They stopped making them, but someone hinted to me they were made for them by Rotosound, even though Ashdown claimed they had made them themselves it when I once asked them where I could get some more.
10. Sounds to me that by raising the input gain, you are turning your DI output up so high it is in effect becoming a line level output rather than a mic. You could try an XLR to jack lead that you then plug into an external DI box, which in effect works as an attenuator as Stewart suggested. Otherwise, the soundman could just convert his input gain on his desk to line level instead of mic - if it is that clever. Unless you are talking studio recordings, I doubt that crosstalk from his loom would be the least of his worries!
11.
1582 + 7 = 1589
I have +5, including my cheapy upright. I guess that makes 1594
12.
Stew bought my EMG's off me at around the time he and Mrs HH were expecting their beautiful baby. A lovely guy and I can't believe he talked his Mrs in to using "Old Horse Murphy" as a middle name
Ha ha, was hoping the name "Horse" might impress the ladies Pleasure doing business with you Nick!
13.
LOL, I'd watch Coopers, BRMs, Westlakes, Brabhams, Ferraris, Hondas and Loti from the 60's every weekend, that drifting style of driving is just the best IMO!
Pah! Those youngsters! It's all s**t since Nouvolari died!
14. To play "devil's advocate" and be a pessimist again, it sounds to me that they like you, but you're not quite what they want, so they're having one last try out with a couple of others before they "settle" with you. I am only saying what it could be, I'm not accusing you or anything. It's whether you take that in your stride and know they won't find someone else and if they do they'd be missing out, or whether you get upset about it all and tell them to shove it up their a**e. The latter does sound tempting, I know! As another poster said, there may be multiple personalities in that band that all have to like you (or else it is difficult). I personally wouldn't make a deal about the drummer being c**p as they might have said that as a kind way of telling you it didn't go that well, and although it may be true, they may not like the fact you are already joining in with badmouthing their members (I believe you said you told the lead man the drummer wasn't great). As for the bass, I joined a blues band that didn't like my "too modern looking" Cort 5 string and kept trying to insist I used my Squier JV as it suited their image better. Tw**s!
15. Just something to add about Stringbusters: If you have any queries or issues, in my experience, don't send them an e-mail. I had to get in touch over a bad Labella string and they didn't respond for ages. I then saw someone on here with a similar issue and they were told to ring Stringbusters, not mail. I did this, and IIRC the woman on the phone "kind of" admitted this was the case (to ring not mail). After I'd called, the usual excellent service I was used to resumed, and I received a replacement string the next morning. Now I know this, I would definitely use them again.
16. I assume this is because your head is out-putting at mic level and your poweramp wants a line-level input. Does your trace not have a pad switch next to the DI socket? (IIRC, some amps do). Does your Trace have working effects send/receive sockets? Perhaps you could try using the send socket? I'll probably get flamed by the electronics pros for saying this, but if it's just for noodling, as a "bodge" you could try plugging your guitar straight into the poweramp. This should be a slightly stronger signal level than your DI socket.
17.
It's the Roscoe Beck signature Fender, appropriate being as he's Roscoe Beck I guess...! I was at that gig, Cohen was god-like.
Doh!, another face put to a name there then for me..... I am certainly enjoying it now. Chilling in the calm before the next new-baby-feed/nappy storm... As I'm typing this, Hallelujah has just come on. Hallelujah!
18. Was just wondering what the red fiver with maple neck was the bass player is using? Any ideas?
19.
What about O I play bass guitar but own a double bass
I kind of agree with this. I own an upright, play it in the house, and have even used it in a couple of gigs, but in the presence of the likes of Jakesbass and co, I wouldn't dare to call myself an upright player.
20. I have owned four sets of 5 string Labella flats, all from Stringbusters. One had a bad B string, really stiff and sounded damped, sounds like the same problem as Clarky's E string. After 2 rehearsals and midway through the second gig, it appeared to snap, although there was no visual damage. I think it was the inner core that snapped. I had never snapped a string by playing before, certainly not a B! Up to that point, I had assumed it was down to my new Squier P5 not being able to handle a B string properly. Stringbusters were great, and replaced the string, although it did have blue on the winding instead of black, so may have been a different string in a Labella packet, or certainly from a different Labella range. Didn't seem different in terms of feel, and is still going strong.
21. I suppose you could use the "MID" band on your Peavey in mono mode which should mean that both the crossover frequencies would do this. It does seem a bit crude though, and you would have to parallel the output elsewhere (your amp?) to make two mirrored outs but they wouldn't work independently. It doesn't appear clear on your diagram which out would be the mid out in 3 way mode. It almost seems like trying to use a sledgehammer to crack a walnut.... Maybe there are some boxes on the market (even a pedal) that just do what you're after? Not too much of a product catalogue index myself I'm afraid.
22.
I thought as much. Does anyone know of one that'll output into 2 channels?
The problem you have (from reading into your intentions) is that you are after the top curve of the High portion, and the low curve of the Low portion on the same output. You then want this mirrored onto a second output for your other cab. On a fixed crossover like the one you mention, the two curves never meet as they are always on separate outputs. Some higher end DSP crossovers (I'm specifically thinking of PA stuff such as XTA as that's what I know) can be programmed to do what you're asking as both ends of the filter are programmable. However, what you are actually asking is for the crosover to work as an EQ filter. A lot of graphics have HPF and LPF controls/switches on them and give you all the EQ in between.
23.
Ok. So say for instance I have a peavey vsx crossover... it does 2 and 3 way. How would it work in terms of the controls? And how would I connect the outputs to a 2 channel power amp?
If you're using this unit, although it has a adjustable crossover frequency(ies), it has fixed H, M and L bands. It wouldn't do what you want it to do becuase it deals with each section on a separate output.
24.
Yes - you will need a 3-way crossover.
Ummm - not necessarily, I don't think. As I said earlier, you could get a more programmable DSP unit that has filters on each output. 3 way would just mean that on a "stereo" input unit you'd have six outputs instead of four. However, it's been a little while since I've been in the game so not sure what's on the market. What I was saying earlier is that on a versatile unit you could set up two outputs to give you what you need and ignore the other two. I'd tend to agree with Alex - if you just want a LPF and HPF I'd look into an EQ unit - you may then get a couple of extra bands to filter in the middle too and possibly cheaper than a crossover, depending on functionality.
25. Depends on the crossover I guess. Some of the simpler ones may have fixed, or variable "High" and "Low" outputs but some of the clever ones will give you four separate outputs that can all be high, all be low, some high, some low, some mid - blah blah blah, the world is your adjustable oyster. Still not 100% sure of what you're trying to achieve from you first post? Not a top and a sub, but different frequency range to each cab?
