3.
I'm new to the South West, and would definitely be up for one. I'm in Bideford now, and suddenly everything is a long way away, but Somerset would work!
Sorry for hi-jacking the thread but I'm a Bideford resident too!! (Been here 20 years now............) Just to let you know I'm playing with my 80's band (The Spaced Invaders) tomorrow night at The Palladium Club in Bideford (just off Mill Street by the Heavitree Arms) - if you're about come down & say hello! Cheers Dave
4. Evening all Am after a bit of advice from anyone in the know Have been happily playing my custom built GB IV since taking delivery of it from Bernie 10 years ago so have been completely happy tone wise! Anyway it's due a major service so is on its way back to Brighton for some long overdue TLC...... Not wanting to be without a jazz type bass in the interim I picked up a used Squier Classic vibe 60s bass at the weekend as a 'stopgap' & have to admit to being quite taken with it. It's well put together and plays very nicely indeed. The only department where it's lacking at all (and this isn't a criticism as for the price it's a great bass) is the output (tone wise it lacks a little 'punch' & the bringe p-up when soloed sounds a little thin) As I really rather like the bass I'm wondering about swapping out the p-ups for something with a bit more poke. Can anyone with experience of doing something similar suggest any possible options? Thanks in advance!
5. Can't help but best of luck dude, here's hoping you and your bass are reunited! 😀
6. A Merry Jingle - The Greedies (Lizzy/Pistols collaboration from the late 70s) 😎
7. I have a black 84 SB1000 & an oak SB700 from the same year. Both great basses!! (Mind you I have been playing in an 80's tribute band for the last 3 1/2 years so they have earned their keep!)
8. 'Just a gigalo/Ain't got nobody' (DLR from his 'Crazy from the heat' EP) - awesome!!
9. Had 2 GBs (a Rumour 4 and a Spitfire 4) built for me by Bernie in 2002 & 2007 respectively and gigged them both regularly. I ended up preferring the Spitfire so sold the Rumour back to Bernie a few years back now. The Spitfire picked up a few (inevitable) dings over the years which eventually got to the point where it bothered me so last year I had it refinished. Sorted! 😀
10. Have admired that particular slice of Deacy 'goodness' for 35 years now (along with countless others - intro to 'The Millionaires Waltz' anyone?) since I 1st heard it on 'The Game' in 1980 One of the most tasteful pop/rock bassists going (not to mention top songwriter/composer to boot) Deacy rules!!
11.
I don't have a fresh 9V to test it against
Buy one? 😃
12.
Music for Chameleons, Gary Numan (not Alan Partridge)
That's an awesome version! 😃
13. Does it come with the footswitch (EQ/Sub harmonic in/out as far as I remember) Cheers Dave
14.
Certainly are great, you could have another
That's a fair point actually, would certainly give me an authentic tone for my slaptastic 80's band!(particularly partnered with my GB IV) 😉
15.
Probably the best head that Ashdown have ever made. Totally unlike the rest of their range and great value used.
+1 (used to own one myself and still regret parting with it tbh!)
16. I have two East Pre's - one in my RW Jazz, and a custom made 3 band John made for my Aria SB1000 Both sound ace and, as mentioned above, give unbelievable tonal versatility
17.
They quoted £255.... A lot of money, but I guess its the costs of the labour.
That's about the going rate for a good quality job tbh I recently had my GB IV refinished in Fender 'Daphne Blue' (about as retro as you can get!) by Brook Guitars (www.brookguitars.com) in Devon and it was £260 plus the cost of the paint. Results speak for themselves though.......... Before......... After............. Well worth the money!
18. Lovely looking bass m8, congratulations. Funny isn't it (& I know we're all different) but the white guard would be my choice. Lovely though!!
19. I've found that in every situation I've put it in so far my GBIV always comes up with the goods on slapped passages/songs - & being in an 80s tribute band I'm afraid some slapping is mandatory As the previous poster said I don't use compression and hardly boost the bass or treble but adjust the mid freq/cut/boost to suit. I find that the GB is such an inherently good sounding instrument it's straightforward getting the tone I want/need (frequent string changing is a crucial element though and should not be overlooked?) Btw on listening to the track it MORE than reminded me of the bass part of an old Level 42 instrumental (imaginatively) titled 'Forty Two' - uncanny!
20. Giving my newly refinished GBIV a workout @ the weekend..... 21.
And the rear...
Ah, that's my old (daphne blue) Rumour on the wall behind Bernie. Happy memories!!
22.
We did that, but it seemed to fall pretty flat with the crowd so we dropped it. 'No-one Knows' is quite fun to play.
Really surprised to hear that! Always gone down a storm in my experience
