My BF Compact (and accompanying compact clone) is paired with an old ampeg ~3x as heavy! 😂
-
For quite some time I ran a Markbass Tube 800 into a Barefaced Midget. I would imagine one of the newer Super Midgets with a 500W MB head would probably go a long way. I found my set up more than held its own for small gigs and coped well for onstage monitoring with PA support. Turned down it was nice for home practice and I could easily lift cab and head together to get them on and off stage. I have since moved to 2 1x15s and an Ampeg SVT 2 pro which is significantly harder to transport and not ideal for home practice 🤣

Hey, I recognise that speaker cable! Was cool to see and hear one of these in person. Now to resist the purchase, certainly looked easier to lift than my SVT

My band Void of Light are touring with fellow Scots Codespeaker next month. If you like Post Metal, Doom & Sludge along the lines of Cult of Luna, Neurosis, Isis and Russian Circles then this could be for you!
-
Cheers! Further beefed it up with a original Compact in place of the Midget. The 2 15s carry some serious heft. Fits in well with my bands addiction to valves.

If you're planning on using a Helix could you just run a small power amp? Something like the GSS Baby Sumo?

Another vote for the Mini Vong, relatively easy build and the guy does a cracking set of instructions. Mine certainly serves me well

Similar to S.P., I'd grab a second hand Corona Chorus if I were you. There is a specific Duff Toneprint on there

I think I have fixed this. Filled the gaps (sorry Stevie, used PU before I saw your epoxy tip) but also when I opened it the wadding was quite loose. I tucked this back so I'm not sure if the noise was the leaks or the wadding somehow managing to touch the back of the cone. If the noise comes back I'll properly staple or bond the wadding to the side walls.

Didn't get around to reassembling last night so will do that today, run a few tests then message Barefaced
-
Cheers Paul, first thing I checked (I've lurked here long enough 😂) Will reassemble this evening and check every fitting

They may not even be leaks but I'm going to treat them as such to be safe. I'll look at moving the element by hand and compare it with the one in my DIY cab since they should be identical. Cheers

Hope folk here can give me a few pointers. Managed to pick up an old MK1 Barefaced Compact in a pawn shop today. All looked decent but when I got it home I found the when I am driving it at reasonable rattle or buzz generated when playing a low B up to about a D. Best I can tell, listening in close, the buzz appears to be coming from the driver itself. Not 100% sure though. I am running the cab alongside my own DIY 1x15 (eminence kappalite) Compact style cab. Swapping the new Compact for my BF Midget removes the buzzing sound so I am confident it's the cab and not something else rattling (amp head, furniture etc.) Started pulling the grill to check the driver I found the battens holding the grill were loose. Turns out they're just glued in place with silicone adhesive and this seems to be giving up. Pulled them off entirely but this hasn't stopped the buzz so they aren't the culprit. On removing them it did reveal reasonable gaps at a few points between the side panels and the front baffle. Not sure these go right through to the inner volume of the cab because there appears to be battens behind but it does make me worry the cab isn't fully sealed. Would a 'leaky' cab like this cause a buzz or distortion from the driver at low frequency? Current plan is to fill these gaps with an expanding glue (gorilla) to try to prevent any potential leakage. If that doesn't change things I'll try swapping the kappalite drivers between the Compact and my own DIY cab. That should isolate whether the issue is cab or driver. I would appreciate advice on how I might diagnose and fix this issue.

See, this doesn't bother me. I generally like the rounder neckwards tone on the low strings and the slightly brighter bridgeward tone on the higher strings any way. For reference, I've had an AB1 six string for about 15 years and just got a 5 string D-Roc but I also have a stable of Fender-esque bits basses

Got it back with a replacement drive pot and a clean bill of health from the amp tech today. Apparently in surprisingly good nick inside, looks like I landed an absolute steal.
-
Joined the club today! Picked this up for an absolute song from a chap who used to run a local studio. Looks like it's taken a few knocks in its life but seems to run perfectly. The drive pot has been snapped off at the shaft and currently has a bolt driven into it to make it usable. Does anyone know the value and spec for this pot before I go rootling around inside?
-
Nope, it's a Diamond bass comp
-
Currently trying comp first in chain and hpf last which is working well. Will try other arrangements but that's working for now.
-
Cheers Phil. When I get time I will chuck the design files in here on the off chance someone wants to have a go or wants to use it to inspire their first build. Who knows, maybe someone else will be luck and find a driver on ebay like I did
-
The pedal I'm building is HPF only, that said, if I like it I may well build a Vong that has both. I am running a Markbass head though and use the VLE to tame high end a little
-
Interesting, my comp is first in my chain. Didn't play nice with previous dirt pedals when I tried it the other way but now I think about it I've not tried with my new Fuzzrocious setup
-
Cheers, matches with my plan but good to know you tried all the permutations first
-
Apologies if this has been asked before, I did do a cursory search. I am going to be building a Schalltechnik_04 HPF and I was wanting to get opinions on where it would be best placed in my signal chain. The intention is to allow me to best get some punchy and heavy sounds whilst still allowing my amp and speakers to run efficiently. I am running a six string through a board that has, amongst other stuff, a couple of drives, fuzz, chorus and reverb. My plan was to run it last in the chain as pedals like the always on drive I use (Oh See Demon) can add quite a bit of low end and I think it could be tamed a little. What are people's thoughts and experiences? Should I run it first so all my effects are seeing a nice filtered signal or last to tame the effect of my effects? Or, as I suspect, is this just a suck it and see type deal where it is completely application specific and I should just try both?

Ran the full stack at volume at practice for the first time yesterday and it was great. Loud band with 3 guitarists and a drummer who's an absolute machine so strong clear bass is important. Have regularly struggled with 8x10 or 4x10+1x15 stacks in the studio but this setup was perfect. Also took drive, fuzz and modulation effects without losing clarity. One of the guitarists complemented me on how he'd never heard the bass be that loud and full without being boomy or indistinct. The fact he even noticed what I was doing when he was trying his new Sunn model T means it must have been good.
