one of the downsides to basswood is that it is almost grainless so useless for natural or transparent finishes

They need all the spare income they can get. I am merely giving them the financial freedom they feel they have lost in recent years.

Yeah that was my last gig, the sound engineers face when I showed him my "rig"was priceless but I doubt the guy with the ashdown was able to move all his gear across Glasgow using only a sack trolley and good old man power.

Thought I should chip in my few midget pics (since I got the other one of the first two I believe) Been gigging mine for the last couple of months and it is great, sounded fantastic on stage last night and the folk could have a good laugh when I picked up my cab and head (shuttle 6.0) in one go still stacked on each other and walked off stage. Loving TCV at the moment, the album is a grower, wasn't sure at first but there's some great stuff in there.

I use a barefaced midget and a genz benz shuttle 6.0. In one word...AMAZING. I can carry my whole rig or take public transport no bother but when I get there it sounds great and volume isn't an issue. I am not talking big gigs here: small venues for around the 60 people mark, but seriously I hardly have the volume past around 10oclock and I cut through the band mix no bother (and my band has 3 singers, two guitars, drums and mandolin)

I just bought an older 55-02 second hand and I have to agree, top quality instrument with great versatility. I use mine for rock/punk type stuff mostly and it is great.

7string (Mark) is a great guy, he'll do a great setup at a low price and he is a damn friendly bloke.

As said small hands shouldn't really be an issue. I have absolutely tiny hands but play a Dingwall with a 37" low B! That said if you are looking for a slim comfy neck I have found Peaveys to be great.

Get a Dingwall, can't beat a 37" scale on the lowest string

My midget will being getting a good run on Saturday in my Folk Punk band, see how it holds up. Was very very very impressed with it at practice last week.

Problem I identified is that I find it hard to hold the bass in an easy position for restringing and cleaning without the potential for it slipping or getting damaged, I also find it hard to work on the back of a bass adjusting trim pots or working on electronics with out a chance of damaging the bass placing it strings down. I am aware I am probably approaching this slightly wrong but I do not have time to change my project (have to draft my brief today and write it for Friday) and I believe there is a problem to be addressed and the potential for a solution somewhere within this.

thanks for the input guys, keep it coming. What I am looking at is not a stand alone product as I realise that there is not enough need for it to be marketable. What I am considering is an adaptation to current a product, probably one of the styles of stands, to give an aid for home mods and maintenance. NickH, thanks for the constructive input, I would be looking to make the design quick release in some way (need to work on some kind of innovative mechanism I feel) so that the bass is secure when needed but easily re-orientated. This is purely a uni project, not something I am going to be trying to sell you guys so don't worry. Out of interest: if I could design a stand that provided all the functionality of a normal stand but also was adjustable to aid maintenance, without a significant increase in cost, do you think it would be a viable product?

By between your legs I assume you mean holding it vertically?

Hi guys, wondering if I could get a little input from you folk. I am still planning to design an aid for home bass/guitar repair, maintenance and modification. I was wondering: 1) What kind of maintenance do you carry out on your instruments at home/gigs? 2) What position is it easiest to have the instrument in for these actions? (vertical, horizontal, at an angle?) 3) Are there any tasks you currently carry out where you find it hard to securely orientate the instrument in an ideal working position? thanks in advance folks Dan
