1.
The definitions you give are not what I would consider to be the root of the question. Are you sure these are the definitions given by your assignment? What is the actual question in your assignment?
The question itself is split it into almost blog like entries. Rather than a full blown essay, so 800-1000 words on each subject chosen. "Cultivating and sustaining an 'authentic' image through live performance and media coverage' I know this isn't the question i asked you guys, but i wanted to look at peoples opinions before moving to this. Live performance includes recordings.
 2.
PLEASE DEFINE 'AUTHENTICITY' !! I think most of this thread is barking up the wrong small shrub.
Sorry only just got back to this and not had chance to read through yet. With the nature of the argument it's very hard to actually define authenticity, I posted a couple definitions on the first pages. I guess in its simplest terms, undeniable credibility.
 3.
Is that an opinion or a belief? Or are you claiming it as absolute truth?
4.
But surely this exercise should be all about your opinions and not what a bunch of people on an internet forum think. Make up your own mind and argue your case. And in the OP the implication was that Led Zep were more authentic than Jedward. I was pointing out that from where I'm standing their inceptions were equally manufactured - although you could even argue that at the very beginning Jedward was less manufactured than Led Zep.
I have my opinions and know what i think in the matter of authenticity in music. It's not about arguing a point, it's researching what & why people think some things are authentic and others less so. The reason i posted this on a music forum is because generally, as musicians, you have a deeper view and feeling into matters like this. Opening a discussion and viewing other's opinions. There is no right or wrong answer, just opinion and beliefs.
 5.
IMO this is the problem with being able to study "popular music" at university. In the end it's entirely subjective and all a little pointless.
Anything that can hold an opinion with people is subjective. Analysing metaphors in poem's whilst studying English Literature can equally be classed as 'pointless'
IMO this is the problem with being able to study "popular music" at university. In the end it's entirely subjective and all a little pointless. From my PoV Led Zep are no more or less authentic than Jedward. They were a manufactured band by Jimmy Page - a session bassist and a couple of nobodies from Birmingham that could be exploited. It's all a question of perspective. Plus Jedward are a lot more fun.
The artists in question aren't relevant. They were just two artists that popped into my head.
 6. When i say pop music, i don't mean as in the 90's pop groups, i'm talking from the 20's onwards, all 'popular' music.
Do you mean authentic or credible? I'm not sure how pop music could ever be authentic..?
Tomayto, Tomarto Authenticity comes with credibility.
is any music authentic???????
we're not far enough in the thread for that yet.
Define "authentic".
"undisputed credibility" "the quality of being genuine or not corrupted from the original" "not counterfeit or copied" "genuine, reliable, trustworthy" "actual, authoritative, faithful, genuine, reliable"
 7. Hey guys, i'm in the middle of doing some research in Authenticity in popular music for an assignment at uni. I thought i'd open the discussions with you lot. What are your feelings on the matter, what makes for example Led Zeppelin more authentic than lets say, Jedward etc... You can see where i'm going with this So what is your take on authenticity in music. What makes it authentic and what doesn't.
 8. I'm guessing mark bass wanted one distributer for all their products (MarkDrum, DV Mark) and maybe Proel didn't want all of these?
 9. Awesome tune! Anyone around London should get down to Phil Simmonds W3 jam night. The percussion player & tenor sax are both regulars there!
 10. Joss Stone's version of You Got The Love. A prime example of "it's about the groove, not the technique"
 11.
I never get intimidated by the 'its hard' arguments because people say that about fretless and, whilst there is a nugget of truth in there, all they are really saying is that there is another problem to solve. Thme solution is to solve the problem, not throw in the towel. Milliions of violinists play in tune without frets and millions of sax players play soprano in tune. Why couldn't I? I want to have a go, that's all. Need to sell some kit to pay for one.
I didn't mean it like that Bilbo, i know your not one to shy away from hard work. I know your not planning on playing Brecker lines over night
 12. I live with a sax player, he's got a pair of silver selmer's. A soprano and an alto. I've attempted to play both with a tuner in front of me and the alto was definitely easier to keep in tune as there is less work to do with your tongue and mouth muscles. IMO saxophone isn't an instrument you can just dabble on if you've got 5 minutes.
 13. Last time i checked, John Henry's in London stock EBS gear for hire, http://www.johnhenrys.com
 14.
Having played a lot of drums to click - yeh, you can "push and pull", but that's not the same as tempo changes which can really contribute to the "feeling" of a song.
I used to have tempo changes in my originals band. Because they were there naturally before we started using sampling we worked out the changes. If its an actual tempo change as appose to speeding up in the chorus because your excited it shouldn't be an issue with a bit of practice.
 15. Just got a track back from the studio. Take a listen http://soundcloud.com/jakebrownbass/gimme-some-lovin-alex-ko-band
 16. Having fun with these today Recording sampling for songs next week!
 17. I'm originally from Huddersfield so i'll get some mates to keep a look out. I can't believe he'd leave that gear unattended in a car in Halifax though!
 18. The body shape looks like a Tobias Growler with a fender-esque headstock. Edit, Seems its a copy of Carvins Bunny Brunel model, made by Gibson. I believe Gibson made the Carvin bass originally.
 19.
sounds good, do you play fretless bass? i can imagine it sounded really good in that mix

Really good sound.

Some really good stuff on this forum.Sounds like an interesting project from a bass playing point of view. Yes, I agree. fretless.
Cheers guys, took a Precision out with this group on tuesday & used a full kit with the drummer. Here's a review i found of it.
 20.
Hey peeps, "The Voice Of... Lithuania", Battle Shows have already been aired on TV last Sunday, you can check out a few clips: MJ - The Way You Make Me Feel: http://www.youtube.c...e&v=j0heDem-6ho A. Bocelli & Ch. Aguilera - Somos Novios
Couldn't stand the vocals on the MJ track. Any reason you chose your electric over synth on that one?
 21. Nice transcription mate, would be even better if it had the chords on it you could analyse what he's playing!
 22. I've got a stagg case and the velcro that comes with it is useless. Get some proper heavy duty stuff for your pedals. You can also use some heat to melt the glue to try and get a better grip.
 23. Are you talking about your Shuker bass? Probably best speaking to Jon about it, if the 21 fret neck you already have isn't needed he can probably re use it and sort a deal with you.
 24.
Jake, I really enjoyed that! Great playing by all, but hey what a fantastic singer that young lady is.
Aha she's not bad is she
That was really good. All great musicians, hope you all go far.
Thanks mate, really appreciated.
The topic and the perceived age of you all suggested that I may not like this (sweeping generalisation!) 10-12 yrs playing is all good but that's still plenty of time to learn bad habits like over-playing and self indulgence. It should all be about the music, the song, the melody, the groove and how people play together to serve the aforementioned. But you know this. Good work.
Thank you.
 25. http://www.thebassment.info/transcriptions/marvin_gaye_tammi_terrell-ain't_no_mountain_high_enough-notation.pdf Its only notation but you've got enough time to work through it.
