1.
About 3mm at 12th fret, minimal neck relief. I use Roto steel rounds (45 - 105), play with a 1.14mm pick with a fairly hard attack so get the clank I need with this set up.
This but with rotosound nexus (45 - 105)
2. Did you hear about the bassist who was so depressed about his bad timing that he threw himself behind a train? He'd have been fine if the drummer hadn't landed on top of him!
3. This post cannot be displayed because it is in a forum which requires at least 1 post to view.
4. Generally it will be at the ends as these are the stress points. You can generally identify which end is the culprit, while it's in use, by using a controlled wiggle and finding out which end the crackle occurs on. This usually has the added benefit of working out roughly where the cable is degraded. You may be unlucky and find that the break is somewhere close to the middle as it's happened where a cable has been repeatedly kinked. Hope this helps
5. Ebay user egilegorbasses sells hipshot USA (not licensed versions) at very good prices. Just bought a full set from him for my bass. He's in Spain so delivery to the UK takes about a week but it's a tracked service. Highly recommend him.
6.
Good point When I got my Chord stand I only had Precisions & set the stand up to suit them - they were & still are fine. Since then I have some Jazzes & yes they don't sit comfortably on the rails at all. So now the Chord stand holds just 5 P basses & the Jazzes are on separate stands.
Now that must be the best reason EVER to give the other half when buying a new bass; "yes darling, I know I have four others just like this one but, as you can see, I have an empty slot on my precision rack"
7.
How do people get them to stay consistently de-tuned?
On one of mine,I have many, the screw thread is a little looser on the stop and can move about with exuberant stage antics. If I used this bass in the band I'm in then I'd probably drop a bit of wax on the thread to increase the friction slightly. The others are rock solid though and generally don't even need adjusting when I get the bass out of its gig bag.
8.
Bass players however, tend to make better producers because we/they are often better at understanding what is going on in the overall picture, even if we don't hear it as a single sound.
I'd never realised, but the penny dropped when I read this, that it's because I'm a bass player that I was the main driving force behind getting everything perfect in the studio. While the rest of my band were sat there listening to the mix saying "yeah, that's good" I was the constant voice in the room saying "nope, xxx is sat wrong" or "there's too much yyy effect on zzz". Everyone except the producer, who thanked me for making his job easier, was getting really pissed off with me by the end!
9. Ah, the drummer search. We're doing this at the moment to. I'd never really gelled with the last drummer in my band, he was a nice bloke but our playing never clicked, so I wasn't too sorry to see him leave. As I joined a band that were already running I didn't get a say in the last drummer. This time I get a big input into who sits down and hits things. It's taking a long time to find the right drummer for our band but, fingers crossed, the guy we met for a beer earlier this week will be able to play well. His personality was a good fit. Take heart that there are drummers out there.
10.
I intend to swap guitars when we play that one song in drop D. No idea if/how it's going to work, as it will be the first gig I'm doing it. Is there anyone who down-tunes their guitars live on stage, mid-performance?
I used to swap for the drop D stuff, then I got myself a hipshot extender. I now down (and up) tune mid song on one of ours let alone mid performance.
11. Ah, bergs with blue LED to match the Genz LED colour scheme; it is a sight to behold. For all of you who like the video: If you would be so kind as to pop on to http://www.facebook.com/ElectricViperBand and share the video post it would be greatly appreciated. We're really proud of what we achieved in a very short amount of time (less than 5 weeks from initial meeting with Cameraman to premier) and want the whole world to see it! Thanks.
12.
First album's the best! Droppin Plates always gets me going \m/
Plates on yer as b1tch!
13. Ah, Disturbed. As far as I know I've never missed a tour. They're as good, if not better live! The singers side project are worth checking out too. They're called Device.
14. That appeals to me on so many levels. Absolutely love the tune and video. Great work.
15.
Water For Dogs have been asked back after last year so I will probably be seeing you there then. (insert smiling emoticon of choice here)
Sounds like a date (insert man hug and pint emoticon)
16.
Nice work Dave. Recognise the retail outlet setting but where was the rooftop? Somewhere local I assume?
RTC Business park, central Derby. When we were looking for locations I thought I'd ask the establishment manager if we could use one of the delap buildings, expecting a no, and he said yes. That was quickly followed with a "are we okay to use the roof" which was met with a "sure, no problem". Pleased you like the video. The band played Brassington last year. it was up for debate as to whether it would be the old bassists last hurrah or my first task, the old bassist won. We've been asked to play again this year.
17. I've got a thread running in General Discussion: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/263034-so-weve-recorded-a-video/page__pid__2785978#entry2785978 The link to the video is on there. I'd appreciate it if you'd give it a watch and give us some feedback. Cheers Dave
18.
Love it! Have you added a thread also under Recording > Share your Music? That's a dedicated showcase for BCers' own music
Thanks Bluejay, I knew there was a more appropriate place than general discussion but I couldn't find it this morning. Pleased you like the video.
19. Thanks for the comments. The rain on the roof top was a happy accidents. We'd just finished setting up when an unexpected monsoon happened. The photograph is of his love interest. Despite 10 to 15 takes we just couldn't get the face to be visible as it burned so we used the one that did the best "movie" burn. If you've watched the video to the end you should know which of the girls!
20. My band now have a proper YouTube presence so I thought I'd share a link and await the comments. Electric Viper - Love Is Dead: https://youtu.be/b34eB10g9dc Have a look and see what you think. All feedback welcome. Cheers
21. I was there too and also thought the sound and layout were pretty poor.
22. Everything is shaping up well. We've got a lot to get done before Saturday but it's going to be a great night. Come on down, The price is right (well, free)
23. As always, when it comes to social status issues, I find myself confused! Can someone check these stats and give me a verdict. Basses: Cheap, second hand, Yamaha P/J basses (x2). Modified Amp: Genz Benz Shuttlemax Cabs: 2x Berg HD112 and 1x Berg HD212. Retro fitted with blue LED lights behind the grill. Car: Volvo V60 D4 (bought new last year). Ford Focus zetec (with optional sports handling pack) had it for 5 years now, doesn't get used much. Toyota MR2 (10th anniversary edition) been sat in the garage since the kids came along 1972 BMW 2000ti. Needs some minor restoration work to get it back on the road. Band: Rock/Metal originals band (with a huge prog influence) Alcohol of choice: Weather dependant but it's either bottled lager (warm weather), pints of Guinness (cold weather), Real Ale (cool weather), Pinot Grigio (meals out and evenings at home Hot drink: Coffee Clothing style: Jeans and T-shirts (either band or from somewhere like qwertee). Add a hoody for cold weather. TV: 42 inch (anything smaller is not visible in my living room) Having written that out I think I really don't qualify for membership. I just wanted to belong
24. It's going to be a bit of a party! It's our first headline show. We're launching our e.p. If everything comes together we've got an extra unveiling planned. The show is free entry and we want to pack the place out. It'd be great to see some of you there. All of the details can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/events/958421404168245 Cheers Dave
25. It's looking like the plans I had for this day have just exited my calendar so, tentatively, I'm going to pop along and meet some people. I have plans in the evening that will involve me having to be home by the time this finishes but I'll probably pop down for a couple of hours and a coffee. Cheers Dave
