1.
I`ve had two - one weighed 10.5lbs, the other was about 8.0lbs, so they`re not all heavy. I really liked mine, great sounds, but ultimately I couldn`t replicate the sound with any other Precision - must have been the ash body - so I moved them on for alder-bodied Precisiosn so I couldreplicate the sound pretty easily with rented/borrowed gear if necessary.
Good point... How will I know whether the body is alder or ash?
2. Simple question, was 1978 "a good year" for Fender Precision basses? I may have the chance to get one for a not so silly price but just wondering how these are viewed as either investment pieces or playable qualities? Of course I will go and try before I buy, but perception of others can drive cost of I was deciding to sell on after a while Thank you
3. Great to play bass on, very difficult to sing!
4.
How can you make Sweet Home Alabama more interesting??
Going to play it with my bass round behind my back tonight... Seriously, I play some p!ss easy songs, our last rehearsal felt stale even though I've not been with the band long, it's easy songs and they've played them for four years together. So we can add more and more songs but also really fine tune some of the performance aspects such as how we transition from one song to another or ensure each player gets a slot to flourish, change up the rhythm and breaks in songs... We all try to add a bit of spontenaity but sometimes it's hard to recapture!
5. Schaller lightweight chrome machine heads that came fitted to my jazz by the previous owner. Nothing wrong with them, just not quite the traditional fender look. These are made for a left handed bass or reverse headstock, etc. After some digging it seems that trying to undo these and rebuild for a right handed bass (as I have done with original fender style tuners before) is not recommended by Schaller.
6.
What does "old but massive" mean? If an option is to link this with your gear then I guess it's a combo. A marquee is basically an outdoor gig. There are no reflecting surfaces so the bass will get "lost" and, as you know, your bass will need help. The first option I'd check out, is the PA is good enough to DI the bass. If it is then problem fixed. If it's not then checkout the Peavey and daisy chain the two combos. You're combo can take an extension cab. IMO bass always sounds better with more speakers even when being run at ordinary gig volumes, so I'd suggest getting the extra cab.
"Old but massive" is all I know about the Peavey. From my experience of old peaveys it will be loud at least... Thanks for the advice, def considering the extra cab for more presence.
7. Thanks. Peavey is coming to next rehearsal so it will get a thorough pushing. I'll ask about the PA too, hope its got big bass speakers...
8. Forty quid, decent envelope filter in great condition with box and Velcro. Unused and not likely to be used in the current band so up for grabs. PM me if interested
9. Thanks - will go for both amps just don't know what state the peavey is in. Good points on balance... Again, don't know much about the PA either as I've not yet gigged with this band...
10. I took my Ashdown toneman 300 combo in to the rehearsal room last night for the first time to give it a push before gigging it. It did well at 70% volume up and with all my pedals running direct to the input instead of to the effects loop. Lots of compliments on sound quality. However, my first gig with this band and this amp is coming up. It's in a marquee. I don't think this combo is going to shift enough air and I don't know if the PA will be able to handle bass input though I hope to God it does... Question is what would be the best way of getting the necessary welly out of my kit? Options are: 1. Buy the 15" extension cab - don't know how much extra this will give me though 2. My singer has an "old but massive" peavey bass amp. I could use this alone and hope it holds the tone clearly (I use a hartke vxl for tone shaping) or even slave it up with the Ashdown. I'm yet to see this Peavey... 3. Buy a new more powerful amp... Which I don't want to do because I am a bit short of cash Any advice or other options gratefully received!
11. ^Nice! I have the same strap on my fretless too
12.
Not that it moves the thread on much, but here is a snap of mine. Neither being the 'real deal', interestingly both have contours. I think of the SCPB as more of a nod to the mid-50's version anyway. Regardless, who doesn't like pics of basses?!
I started this and I wholeheartedly approve of the pictures!
13.
Years ago, when I was short of money, I sold my lovely Hohner Jack to a friend for £75. I really regret it now as it was a super bass. I tried to buy one a few years ago on eBay but the sale fell through. It only reached £180 which is a really good price as well so it irks me even more that they go for so much now. Don't think I could justify a replacement at the moment.
Hohner jacks regularly on gumtree at silly low prices. My wife has told me I am not allowed to buy a load there to sell on eBay at a profit
14.
http://www.coda-music.com/fender-custom-shop-masterbuilt-slab-body-closet-classic-bass-pink-paisley-p-23548.html?oscsid=8f31f64fabac0b34c145352435abf814 tried this today, only 10 min drive from my house. I wasn't a fan of the amp, the bass played nicely but the tone was a bit dull for me
Nice! I'm not far from coda in Stevenage, might tickle it upside down next time I'm up there
15.
We were doing Bohemian Like You by The Dandy Warhols last night. Its the first time I have played the song with this band. I'm pretty sure its in open G tuning, that's how they got the Stones rip off element just right. So I mentioned this to the guitarists as they were just doing it in standard tuning and it sounded 'off'. The reply? "I'm not tuning to open G, it takes too long". Apparently though, endless faffing around with pedal settings between songs is ok. I'm out.
Interesting! I stopped my band trying to faff around with half step down tuning, it's just unnecessary and takes too long, plus the guitar doesn't stay in tune. Then you have to tune back to standard... I appreciate though open G creates a different feel, if there's a spare guitar then great tune that open G. If you aren't prepared to nail the feel of a cover you shouldnt play it IMO. It's the bloody mindedness to play favourite songs instead of thoughtfully construct a set list that works for the band and the audience that I see time and again with covers bands
16. In the Herts area lemonrock is a good website for finding bands. I've personally steered clear of jam nights as I find them more for self-obsessed guitarists, particularly in blues, though I would love to be proven wrong. Other than the sites if you're in Herts pop in to the practice roomz in Stevenage and look at their noticeboard, or the Farm Factory in Welwyn GC. There's always a load of "bassist wanted" ads in there, and it is likely to have been put up by a band that is using the rehearsal space, so not necessarily dreamers doing nothing, and you can ask the guys in the rehearsal space whether they're a serious bunch or not
17. The squier VM Telecaster bass and the Modern player Tele bass (with two pickups) both seem to have bitten the dust very early. Hard to find them knocking about second hand though - with either I'd be tempted to do a very simple conversion to lefty (strap pin, nut and strings switch around only) I find the big chrome pickup really visually striking, but if the sound is just mud that sucks. I have seen original telebass on eBay with a jazz pickup butchered in probably to put some more character in the sound.
18. So is the single coil Telecaster bass pretty much an early p (e.g the "sting" p bass) In terms of pickup placement and tone? Or is there a difference?
19. Bob you've captured it! I remember a snarky Jeff Berlin interview where he was really disparaging towards people who don't sight read and know classical music, made me think he's a c*ck. Playing bass, like most things in life, is a case of do what you enjoy (as long as all involved are consenting adults and nobody gets hurt)
20. So the precision or jazz thread got me thinking... What happened to the telecaster bass? Being left handed I Kay never get a go on one, though I have lusted after them and even the Squire that was out a few years back... So, were these any good? What is the sound like? A classic bass or something that just wasn't on a par with the p and j?
21.
Its rather like asking whether a chicken madras is better than a lamb dhansak. There's no reason why a bit of variety should be considered a bad thing. But if I could only choose one it would be a P.
No word of a lie, I always order a chicken dhansak as hot as a Madras... It's unbeatable
22.
Thanks! I've contacted them to ask if they do a lefty model.
The Gold Tone lefty was on eBay a year or so back... It definitely exists!
23. Saw a band recently where the bassist used one of these through a fender rumble (probably the 500) and the sound was excellent. Just typical issue of no lefties being made... :'(
24. Being kack handed I stand on the right so there's no risk of headstock clashing. The singer likes the symmetry my upside down handedness brings to the visuals...
25. Still trying to work this out... At the moment precision for its simplicity, but that bridge pickup and skinny neck on the jazz certainly adds something.
