I kind of like using it but I guess I own a P bass partly because I feel I ought to, as a keen bassist... But I don't really need it. To be fair I don't need most of my gear at all. I am probably going to go back round the loop of shedding basses and other gear down to a minimum just to build it all back up again. "Stuff that needs repairing" is something I've been inspired to acquire but I have not the time, skills or tools to do this. I have just felt the need to buy an 80s Aria Pro ii with a broken neck, all the components of a bitsa that ended up looking great but costing more than a Sire that would be a much better instrument, and some weird kit bass I bought and tinkered with. All completely unnecessary and almost a total waste of time.

NBD: Rare MIJ Late 60s Traditional II Jazz w/ Matching Headstock
uk_lefty replied to wateroftyne's topic in Bass Guitars
Very nice! I was watching a documentary a while ago and saw a bassist using an original like that with the ashtrays on and ever since thought it was a very tasty looking combination on a Fender Jazz. -
What are your irrational prejudices? I have some bonkers ones...
uk_lefty replied to kwmlondon's topic in General Discussion
1. Green basses 2. Blue basses, but those basic poster paint blue ones, not Daphne blue, Miami blue, dark night 3. "The Sansamp sound" I just don't get it 4. Not all the best stuff being made in left handed 5. Effects sounding great sometimes but terrible others for no logical reason 6. Really bad looking exotic wood tops like on the new Sire basses 7. Guitarists thinking they can play bass but really they just play root notes with very little expression 8. Coloured bass strings -
My thinking exactly!!

It looks nice, it's a Sandberg so it will be excellent quality... But something about it just doesn't do it for me. And it certainly doesn't do it at that sort of price point.

Close my eyes forever is a great song

Which? The ashtrays or the creme? Or both?? Tis a nice bass.
-
Excellent choice. I had one of those and loved it, it will serve you well.

I love having the full ashtray setup on my P bass for the look but I don't like not being able to play right over the pickup. So to keep the retro aesthetic I've gone for creme pickup covers... What do you think?

I have absolutely no affiliation to the seller, but this looks like a good deal: Fender American Standard Jazz Bass Left-Handed 2009 3-Color Sunburst https://reverb.com/item/91276145?utm_source=android-app&utm_medium=android-share&utm_campaign=listing&utm_content=91276145

Listen to Angie - fretless WHITE COLLAR FRAUD 2012 by RR on Bass on #SoundCloud https://on.soundcloud.com/PiYWo5LIhTeTgiXOGq This is a recording made maybe in 2010 on my fretless Kramer. It was quite a cheap bass when it came out but good quality for the price. In recent years I have upgraded the wiring loom with a Kiogon made version and it's given the bass a lot more Welly.

That is the sound I want!! Mental note made. Lovely stuff.

The only fretless basses I've had have had uncoated fretboards... One rosewood (Kramer), one laurel (Harley Benton) and one tiger stripe ebony (Korean Warwick). I'd love to try a coated fretboard like on the Sire fretless J basses, What's the opinion on coated boards?

There's something about a fretless Fender P, it just looks right to me... And @Linus27's Warwicks are absolutely stunning.

Aged 18 I got a fretless to upgrade from my Tanglewood beginners P bass. I used it as my sole bass all through my first gigging band and for some years later. I still have it almost 25 years later and it still gets gigged occasionally. I had a Warwick Korean made fretless for a while which sounded fantastic but I sold it when my 80s band folded, but it would have been nice to keep it as it had the most outrageous "mwaaaaahhh". I now own two fretlesses as I have the Harley Benton fretless jazz. This is also gigged occasionally and comes along as a backup quite often. While the music I play (covers) are not fretless bass recordings I always find a way to tastefully (???) add in some fretless when the mood takes me. I used it more as a "seasoning" than a main ingredient, it keeps me thinking and stops me getting bored.

While you might not be being unreasonable I am sure they get thousands of requests of this nature and never hear from the person again.... Like when any of us tries to sell something online. I had a bass up for sale "can you record it playing through a distortion pedal please?" Errrrr why? Or the thousands of back and forth messages with people who then disappear when you try to confirm they will buy and pay.

Haha I just looked this morning out of interest. Some beauties there, has someone had a clear out??
-
I have had so little time to spend on this on really feeling quite guilty about it. I'll probably stick it up for sale in the next few days, with the bits to finish it off.

I had the cricket bat Hohner B2A with EMG pups. It was ace!! When I finally get my 80s band started... Later this summer I hope, I will probably want another. Though mine was active I loved the sound in passive.
-
It's a car boot sale though, so they say they want £200 and they'll have people offer them 50p and a pre-chewed Werthers Original then getting offended when they're told to sling it. Having said that.... At a vintage fair saw a nice Kramer guitar once. I think they wanted two grand "because of who it belonged to, wink wink" I was told. It was an Eddie Van Halen replica. B*blocks, can't be EVH's and can't even be pretending it is. I was right. They said it belonged to some bloke from a 70s rock band I'd vaguely heard of. As if that makes a budget Kramer, absolutely knackered, and with peeling decals to make it look like an EVH, worth more than £100.

Putting jazz bass ashtrays on a bon-jazz bass is an abomination. I cannot stand it when I see these. Otherwise, bass looks alright, because of unknown origins etc. I wouldn't pay more for that than the price of a new fretless Harley Benton
-
Go for it!! Best of luck for the rest of the treatment

+1 to this. It's a good album, very musical, and not just a bass assault on the ears, there is fast playing and obviously the bass is the star instrument, but it's done well IMO.

What's your name/ handle/ address on there, please?
