  1. I'd love to know your compression settings and copy them. Mine seems to suck out all tone and character, but I probably need to spend more time with it. I do enjoy the enhancer for my fretless bass though. I use the recommended setting from the manual and it brings out something from the bass
  2. I tell them I don't play for free.
  3. Just interesting as I've read lots of people saying they immediately got on with fan frets no issue, yet I've always been sceptical. Maybe they're justifying the huge investment in a weird looking bass?? Seems your review is more realistic, it takes time, patience and some quiet around you to get to know it.
  4. In my naive youth I was told the skunk stripe was a mark of quality. But my MIJ Fender doesn't have one and it's an amazing bass. Now dad has informed me the functional reason for them I could give or take a skunk stripe.
  5. Thanks. My guitarist suggested cutting and resoldering the cables but I think he was talking about patch cables and not power cables. Shorter cables would be ideal though.
  6. Did you like the bass?
  7. I never thought I'd be a pedalboard guy but it turns out I am. I won't bore you with a story so similar to all of your own, but I find myself in a mess of cables. My Gator board isn't massive, I don't want to buy a bigger board, but I have taped my power pack underneath and now I have a mess of cables underneath the board. Is there anywhere I can get really short 9v connector cables, or any good tips on tidying these away somehow? For patch cables between pedals I've just invested in flat cables and have some "double ended jack connectors" that only work with pedals of the same brand. Ideally I need a board like the pedal train but determined to keep my pedal and board related spending as low as possible! Any tips gratefully received!
  8. I'm not necessarily assuming it, he could just be out there to do what he's told and coin in as much as possible. He could be a frustrated artist, or anything in between. Either way, I bought one of his albums and found the singles to be good and the rest a bit meh. But I won't get angry about it. Manufactured pop and the like has been around for decades, it's not changing any time soon.
  9. Amazing when you hear 80's and 90's pop groups who truly awful the vocals were. At least now people can sing in tune, largely, even if they are trying to copycat someone else. Bruno is a commercial slave. So am I, I do an unfulfilling job so that I can pay my mortgage. I hate it but I'm good at it so I keep doing it. Will I cut my pay down to almost nothing to use my skills for the benefit of a charity? I hope to in future, but I need complete financial security first. I'm sure every now and then Bruno wants to bring out a new type of soul or something but nobody would buy it and it would ruin his commercial "credibility" so he sticks to the formula and keeps his career going. Do I enjoy his music? It's ok. But I'm not his target audience. I agree he is talented, I agree he is ripping off the greats before him, just hope it introduces a new audience to "the gap band" etc. for their musical education.
  10. Country and western. You're just a GAS fiend.
  11. Hard rock cafe... Ok I get it. It's more about making sure the instrument is kept in best condition, not just displaying
  12. I have a colleague in her mid 40's whose father was a bassist and he passed away when she was young. She inherited his basses, I don't know what they are but they will be good quality mid 70's (at the newest) basses. She wants to display them in her new house on wall hangers. Also I think she wants some advice on how best to look after them. While she is very musically adept herself I don't think she will be playing these, but will never sell them. I'd like to build up a list of things for her to do to keep them in best condition... It seems "leaving them in the case" isn't the first option for her! Would the good folks of basschat like to help? So far I'm on: Hercules wall hangers but use longest screws possible; Record the serial numbers in case they get stolen; Check the neck for straightness/ no warping;
  13. Nice looking body wood, what is it?
  14. Probably because of the location... https://www.gumtree.com/p/for-sale/lovely-big-old-trace-elliot-bass-amplifier/1286392089
  15. SX do a good range of fretless basses. Years ago I played a defretted squier plywood pj bass and that sounded exceptionally good for what it was. Those would both be very cheap and probably easy to find around second hand.
  16. Columbus 70's P https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F142683754432 High start price or good value?
  17. Great stuff! Thinking of getting my band name in Fender type font, where did you get that?
  18. I was rubbish for the first two years of playing. Didn't even have a tuner, just had one "learn bass" book but the cd was missing. I got a tuner, downloaded tabs for my favourite songs (on dial up internet, what a ball ache!) And tried to learn songs I liked. After two years I went to play with a band who were far and away miles better players than me and I was so embarrassed! I turned up with a 10w practice amp and they had pro kit, I had a list of songs I could play... Well! Playing with the band just released me. Making mistakes is fine, it's a symptom of enjoying yourself and getting lost and experimenting. I've been gigging fifteen years now, on and off, and I make mistakes time and time again! But when you play with others, that raises your level, if you listen and try to play with them instead of play your part independently. They will cover your mistakes naturally, they will compliment what you're doing and vice versa without a word ever being said and often without anyone consciously knowing. That's the magic of it. Keep going! Enjoy it. Take lessons, but if you don't like the teacher change them. Play with others, ideally people with more experience but a good attitude. Listen to good bass music. Keep challenging yourself and come back to the stuff that you just don't quite get yet.... I'm still waiting for my week to dedicate to learning portrait of Tracy! Keep going. Nobody was a bass genius on day 1. Or even day 700.
  19. Do you take orders? The lefty is out mid March
  20. There is a running joke I'm my band that on a tune with two solos I mimic the guitarists solo under his and steal his thunder. The drummer and singer think it's funny anyway.
  21. Love it! Unless you're a Hendrix tribute I don't think many audiences really care about the guitar solos! I play with two very good guitarists but our purpose is to get people to dance, so they play solos that fit the original tune and keep the groove, it's not a w4nkfest. Thankfully. I have played in those types of bands and people really don't care. New one for the profanity filter: w*nkfest.
  22. Great stuff! Glad you found "the one"
  23. I know... I've got one myself
  24. That's a very low starting bid!!
