Does changing the bridge make much difference?
White Cloud replied to Twangster's topic in Bass Guitars
Aye I knew that I was just trying to be funny. Which obviously didn't work. Coat got.
Take yer coat off, take a pew and pour yourself a cold one...I found it funny! -
Does changing the bridge make much difference?
What, they have signature P basses too?!
The OP's question - "Does changing the bridge make much difference?" Jazz bass = bass with a bridge. Marcus Miller + Geddy Lee models = basses with non standard bridges (that make them better). -
Does changing the bridge make much difference?
White Cloud replied to Twangster's topic in Bass Guitars
Well the Fender Custom Shop Pino signature P bass has a vintage BBOT with threaded saddles which suggests he gets by just fine without a chunky bridge.
True...but it seems that Geddy Lee and Marcus Miller disagree with Pino. -

Does changing the bridge make much difference?
White Cloud replied to Twangster's topic in Bass Guitars
Yes very much so. I believe that this is the single best P bass upgrade you can make. All of my P basses have either worn a Badass or laterally a Gotoh (cheaper, almost as good). Beware though....others will stop by shortly and say no and claim that I am spouting nonsense. You decide. -
Great basses, solid and sweet sound. http://youtu.be/4uym2_S_Y50

Have you considered a play with a Lakland Bob Glaub........?
Well i did say talent comes in many forms. One of them could be maybe be having the right look or image or being in the right place at the right time. And there are millions of others who if in the right place could do a whole lot better. As for Mr Cowell he has some talent however i see him is more a cog in the machine. Its takes writers, produces, a whole host of various management and marketing to come with the rubbish they will and be able to flog it so well. But i think you could swap out many of there singers or various other "artists" with millions of others and get the same result. The culture of modern celebrity has made it possible now for people who wouldn't of got anywhere in life to get to the top.
Good post!

Its a truly horrendous piece of hardware for all of the previously outlined reasons....imho the single worst piece of hardware design I have ever encountered on an instrument. The hipshot on the other hand is excellent.

No...if it's good it's good regardless of genre.

what's the worst thing that's happened to you onstage?
White Cloud replied to Funky Dunky's topic in General Discussion
So, so many to choose from. I would say that the worst was when we were hired for a surprise birthday party - the surprise for us was that the room was full of OAP's. After several non polite complaints about the noise we ended up playing at a barley audible level (it was still too loud!). The icing on the cake was when two extremely elderly gentlemen in the front row directly in front of us produced an electronic chess game and proceeded to play it for the duration of the night. Each song was not only met with a stoney silence - but also the sight of the two old dudes attempting to beat each other at chess oblivious to our existence. It's all part of the rich tapestry of life. -
Oh no....just oh no. Legend.

Five String Jazz Basses talk to me?! NOW A NBD THREAD !!!!!
White Cloud replied to stingrayPete1977's topic in Bass Guitars
Lakland - not a Fender......better than a Fender. Go Darryl Jones. -
As a current (and former) Alembic owner...Celinder owner (three times), Smith owner (three times) blah blah....Alembics are definitely idiosyncratic but surpassed by noone. They've staked their territory for over a generation.
I hear you....Alembics wear an almost mythical aura. Legendary and virtually peerless...but it just didn't work for me.
I owned TWO Series I, one from 1978 (Rick Turner era) and one made in 1981 (Single Point and Small body). With all the due respect, I'll avoid bashing them but I sold them pretty fast.
As a former Alembic owner I concur with this. I have owned some of the truly great bass makes...but never came even close to a CT.

There's certainly not a lot of them around!
Yes, I'm not sure what the full RRP of these basses was, but the Thomann indicated price in pounds sterling was £377. I guess my credit card company will hit me a bit with their exchange rate and charges, but even then it should still look very good.
Fwiw I am seriously fighting the urge to buy the 5 string version. At £417 it is almost a 60% discount.

I have been a long time admirer of Carl Thompson basses (and Mr Carl Thompson himself) - but have never owned one. They are as rare as hens teeth....anyone here lucky enough to own one?
Just by way of an update. I eventually decided against defretting a bass. Instead I have a Warwick PS Corvette Ash Fretless (the passive model) on the way from Thomann. I understand that it is one of the last Korean made Pro Series basses, which Thomann are selling off at a good discount. Add that it is B-Stock and the price appears to be a massive steal.
I would say that you have made a very good decision...and purchase. The current Thomann Warwick PS deals are incredible...
-
they've discontinued the Korean Pro Series now so Thomann are selling off the remaining stock at silly cheap prices so if you have some cash now is a very good time to buy. They are awesome basses
Oh yes...they have a PS Corvette 5 string fretless for £417. I don't need it, but am seriously tempted at that price.

Does body wood make a difference to the sound of a bass guitar?
White Cloud replied to Annoying Twit's topic in Bass Guitars
My point was that even if you don't care about the species of the wood used for the body, you may be affected by other people being more choosey.
Fair enough, point taken! -

Does body wood make a difference to the sound of a bass guitar?
White Cloud replied to Annoying Twit's topic in Bass Guitars
It may still affect you. If luthiers use fancy (and expensive) woods because 'the market' won't accept a high-end bass made of cheap materials, then you end up paying more for a certain quality of bass than you would be able to if 'the market' was more accepting of different types of wood. Not a problem, I would expect if you're buying custom made basses, as you can choose the wood. But, if you're buying higher quality off the shelf products, this may affect you. If you're concerned about ecology, then 'the market' also has a tendency to value woods of endangered species over and above more common, less endangered, species.
If bass feels right, sounds right and looks right (to me) ....then it is right. How and why doesn't concern me tbh. -

Honestly....I really don't care. I just enjoy playing the bass.
