1.
I found a site the other day where you could put your salary in and pick a pro footballer and it would tell you how long they take to earn your total annual salary. The big names were earning mine in roughly a quarter of an hour, and the figure I put in was before any deductions. Different world.
My friend sent me that today. It I would take me 707 years to earn Gareth Bales annual salary. I guess sport is more lucrative As for the comment that semi pros have the best if both worlds, this is probably true. My friend is a phenomenal singer, she's always in demand for studio work, she's in my band, has her own rock band, her own folk band and she has said many times it's only through her partners support that she can be a full time musician. If he wasn't earning enough to run the house, she'd have no chance. She has a degree in Music Performance, and when times have been particularly tough (like when she split from her husband) she has taken on part time work to supplement her music earnings to keep her family afloat. Now her children are grown up and have left home, and now she has a supportive partner (he's awesome!) she's now back to being a full time musician but it hasn't been easy.
 2.
My daughter, though, is now seriously involved with a drummer. I thought I raised her better than that! lol
This has made me giggle!
 3.
Lemmy called discreet a w***er and couldn't believe the tornado-level backlash and got frightened off ..
PMSL I didn't know this! Funniest thing I have read today. But he may have had a point....... Sorry Discreet, you know I loves ya really
 4.
I like really bright sounding roundwounds but I find if I use Elixir strings they tend to sound "fresh" for a good 6 months before I notice any real decrease in sound quality.
^ This I have elixirs that are 6 months old now, and I am noticing they have lost their "zing" and the tension is feeling dodgy, so I will be replacing them once I've got my money from this weeks gig. My fretless I use flats and they just go on and on and on!!!
 5.
"The main man in Floyd after Roger Waters departure"?? I would have thought that particular title belonged very much to David Gilmour.
Nah, I think like a bassist Although in fairness, there are so many rumours that David Gilmour did much of the bass accredited to Waters. And certainly he didn't do the fretless work on the wall when I saw it live and left it to the session bassist
 6.
Not a lot really. Your average pro doesn't have the time or inclination to be as much of a gear nerd as your committed amateur or semi-pro. Though Guy Pratt did help SpaceChick with some Pink Floyd bass-tone information, I believe - before he mysteriously disappeared.
Haven't read the whole thread yet, but yes. Guy Pratt was AWESOME helping me. He sorted out my pedal settings remotely for some of my set list tracks. He was friendly, helpful and happy to support simple old me playing in a Floyd tribute band when he'd spent time being the main man in Floyd after Roger Waters departure. I can honestly say his support was outstanding and really humbling to see such a legend prepared to help a fellow far less experienced bassist....... And then the community treated him badly and he left
 7. Funny enough, I have been having this conversation only today whilst dropping off some tickets for my gig on Saturday in the shop that is selling them for us. There was a punter in the shop who wanted to buy tickets, but the shop had run out (hence me dropping more in). Shop keeper "Ah Debs, perfect timing. This chap wants to buy two tickets" "Great" I reply. "You managed to leave work early then" replied the shop keeper "yes" I replied "I thought you were professional musicians" chirps in the punter I replied "It depends on your definition of professional. We put on an authentic show. However, music doesn't pay enough to pay my bills. I guess you'd probably class as as semi professional" "oh OK" he replied Shop keeper chirps in "they are professional, they a f***ing awesome" Personally to me, I think to be a true professional, you need to be able to make your money through music and be able to turn your hand to any genre and have the skills to play whatever is required. For this reason I will NEVER be professional but I could say I am semi professional as I do make some money from playing music!
 8.
It is one of the problems with playing in a 'scrumpy 'n western' band, punters will inevitably drink too much scrumpy.
PMSL at scrumpy 'n western
 9. My sister has never come to a gig with me as a bassist She came to several of my classical gigs, but hasn't seen me rock my socks off live
 10. Not at gigs, but every workman that comes into my house ever says "Is your husband a bass guitar player" (or sometimes just guitarist), me "no"... "Son?"... "no" cue quizzical look from said workman, followed by me clarifying "I'm a bassist" followed by shock, sometimes with apologies I do get asked out at more gigs than I don't, for some unknown reason as I'm hardly a hottie! It would seem that men find a female bassist quite an alluring concept. I always reply that I am flattered but happily married.
 11. Ahhhhh Shell, this is lovely We are long overdue another fancy lunch!
 12. I always felt sorry for E and B, fancy not having a sharp to call your own. And then F and C can never feel flat. Our arbitrary letters and sharps and flats have never ceased to amaze me. I just used to love winding my old music teacher up by saying I was playing in the key of B sharp And calling a d flat, a C sharp as well ultimately they are one of the same, unless those pesky symbols at the start of the stave say otherwise
 13.
1973/74 my first bass and rig. Epiphone semi acoustic.
I was born in 74 I don't think I've got a picture if my first bass It was a cheap, non branded, blue Jazz type bass.
 14.
the Floyd's 'Another Brick In The Wall, Part Two'..? Yes, I think they'd notice. Would they care..? Maybe not, really, but some could be disappointed, although not enough to throw rocks, I'd hope.

Must try that with "Money".
Oi, stop pinching my set People only notice the bass when something goes wrong or it stops. FACT!
 15. Saw him during Swansea jazz, he's awesome
 16. I am the fairer sex I always find that honesty is the best policy when dealing with my hubby Although he also has an expensive hobby in photography. We have a deal, we pay our share for our bills and outgoings and if we have anything left then we are free to do what we want with it
 17.
In that case, they are very, very tall..!
PMSL!!!!!! I am creased Doug xx
 18.
Great gig with The ELO Experience at The Severn Theatre in Shrewsbury to a sell out crowd. One of those nights when it all comes together - venue, audience, crew & band!
Lovely venue that! Only been as a punter, not a performer though
 19. So you gonna grow an impressive beard? Oh and if you do end up state-side I'll be a roady
 20. I know I can't do the 7th March, but other dates looking good
 21. I was hoping to make it this year, but I've got a gig instead. Would have liked to have seen Mark King too. Another year maybe!
 22.
The first leg of the Terrortones mini November tour saw us in South Wales. Great road trip complete with tunnel screaming to get to Neath on the Friday to play at The Duke. Very strange place (even by our standards). Looked completely closed from the outside. Inside appeared to be lit by 2 bulbs for most of the evening. Stage was one of the most rickety I've ever been on and that included one with holes in it that we were on this time last year… For a while it looked like we might be playing to just a handful of locals but it started to fill up just before we went on stage (and even more just after we came off - had we known we might have delayed playing for another 30 minutes or so). There was no support band so we were a little worried that people might leave before we played, but cheap drinks and what appeared to be a total lack of anything else to do in Neath meant that everyone stuck around for the whole evening (thank you). Played a great set and didn't mess up the new song.
Great description of the Duke Can't believe you were on my doorstep and I didn't know. Would have come along if I'd known.
 23. This is great, I've liked every band
