2. Yay. Good man. A whole new world of material beckons.
 3.
so what do we think of Jamerson? Appalling technique - no teacher would advise a pupil to just pick with one finger - yet we can't deny his genius.
Yes,but importantly, Jamerson came from an Upright background, where plucking with one finger has been a tradition for years. There are a lot of players who have never had that training and haven't developed the facility of using one finger like that.
 4. If you have to/want to play something and you struggle physically you soon find out how important technique is. The whole point of developing your technique is so that you don't have to worry about anything. Having good technique will not hinder you,it will just make the job a lot easier.
 5.
On another note... best way to start learning? DVD, books?
Lessons.
 6.
this is still killer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yioVmqlt2Fk&NR=1
As cool as it is rhythmically, there is little going on harmonically. This is my main gripe with Mark King in general. Yes he does some stuff where he doesn't get his thumb out,but it's not,for me,mind blowing by any stretch.
 7.
What you mean is "I can play Sir Duke and I want to tell you all" congrats, go to the Boffin class with Bilbo and his other "readers" as Bill Hicks used to say!! PS j for joke and all
Can I get in based on the fact that I once sight read it?
 8.
Hi, Newbie here. May I ask what does the SQ and JV abbreviation mean? Cheers
I think...I maybe wrong though.... that JV is Japanese Vintage while SQ was short for Squier. They were used as the first two letters of the serial numbers on the early Japanese Squiers ('82-'84).
 9.
I think today you can spot a good bassist a mile off, usually if he has his Level 42 licks together. A little bit of "43" here, a bit of "Mr Pink" there, most of the guys who have got their chops together now did it with Level 42 records!
That's a very bold statement. Speaking purely of myself,I've got my chops together, but none of it came from studying Level 42 licks. I've listened to them, and I quite like them, but I've never been inspired to learn any of their stuff....ever.
 10. I totally agree with 'The Jazz Theory Book',it's the best book around for studying jazz. The Ed Freidland books 'Building' and 'Expanding Walking Basslines' are great for getting you into walking. Also,it's worth buying at least one volume of the 'Real Book' and practise walking over the changes. I learnt the most about jazz from finding a weekly jazz jam,and playing with a bunch of old guys (70's)who had been doing it for years. We'd just play, and they would occasionally stop and give me advise on things to play and how to approach things. Oh yeah......Listen to a lot of jazz aswell.
 11. How about the good old fashioned way of writing dots on manuscript paper?
 12.
So carry on and critiscise him, but he is a truy amazingly talented bass player. He's so far above 99% of the people on this forum who are criticising him that he's out of sight.
Maybe....but I can also guarantee that there are players on this forum who have done gigs that he couldn't have done if he hadn't made a career with one band. He's cool within Level 42,but for an 'amazingly talented bass player' he's never been 'in demand'.
 13.
You need to look past the top 10 then - The second biggest selling artist in the UK of the 1960's was Ken Dodd - quality songwriting?????
You've heard the song,right?
What's your source on that?
'Tears' was the biggest selling single of 1965 and third biggest selling single of the '60's behind 'She loves you' and 'I want to hold your hand'
 14. Try a blues in F and B flat
 15. It looks like a BassMute to me http://www.elliomartina.com/bassmute/bm_mainframe.html
 16.
I have found it!!! GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT!!!!! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-11491237
Brilliant idea.....Start a tribute to a cover band
 17. The old Cort TM Stevens model had an envelope filter built in.
 18. We all know my opinions on iGig cases. Best case I've used by miles
 19. There was a slight cross over between the JV and SQ series as well. If I'm correct, the JV series was '82-'84, and the SQ was '83-'84. I've got an '83 SQ Precision and it is probably the best P-bass I've played. The neck is also more figured than on most Fenders.
 20. Bryan Beller transcribed it in the August '08 issue of Bass Player,if that helps.
 21.
Thanks Doddy, I might drop you a PM with a few more questions if thats ok.
Yeah..Go for it. Anytime
 22. Check out the Roland SPD-S. I work with a couple of guys that use them.
 23.
What band/artist do you cover? I've played in tributes to Stereophonics,Foo Fighters and a couple of occasional Elvis gigs Are you pro or just for fun? Pro How many gigs do you get a year? We did at least 2 or 3 every week What type of gigs do you do – pubs, clubs, weddings, private parties, festivals etc? We did a lot of Chicago Rocks and the like, but we played a lot of established clubs as well.We did a few festivals and a bunch of private functions aswell Are the gigs packed or various? Generally the gigs were very well attended, although there were exceptions Do you have an agent or do you manage yourselves? We worked through a few agents, but also booked gigs direct Do you act and dress the part or just play the songs? We didn't out and out copy the band, but we tried to convey their general vibe
24.
I don't think that's right, Linus. I have seen bands doing covers at theatres (60s music a favourite for them - not me, hate the s***) and tribute bands doing pubs (Railway in Ipswich used to have 3 a week). You can't generalise (or is that a generalisation ). I guess some of its is about how big the show is. If its lasers and dancers, you won't get it in a pub.
But the covers bands that are playing in theatres are usually themed shows (60's,Motown, Disco...Whatever) in a similar way to tribute bands. It is certainly easier to get better gigs and more money if you have a theme. I've found this out myself by actually calling up venues and booking gigs. If you tell a venue that you are a cover band, they don't know what you are going to play and think that can book a local band for a lot less. But,if you tell them that you are, say,a tribute to 90's Britpop, you are more likely to get the money that you ask for and the venue owner can advertise you better.
 25.
Yes, but if i met Robert Fripp, i wouldn't say 'Oh, Hello Mr.Crimson'. Jamiroquai is Jay Kays Collective...him + his chosen musicians.
So it's basically a solo thing, but not using his name. It's not like a band like Alice Cooper, where the singer later takes on the name/persona.
