The technical and theoretical knowledge to be able to relay such fundamental knowledge. If a teacher doesn't know their theory and cannot read music I wouldn't expect them to advertise as a teacher for advanced students.
Great point. There are a lot of people who think that teaching at an 'advanced' level means they can show someone how to play a Flea slap line or tapped arpeggios. I know when I have a lesson,I want to know how and why things are working and to have it written out so I can work on it later.I don't want to learn 'licks'. Believe it or not, when I had my last lesson I ended up with about 4 bars written out by the end of it and that gave me enough to study for at least 6 months,as well as a whole load of new ideas and concepts.Hopefully the same will happen in a couple of weeks when I have my next lesson. That's what I want from an 'advanced' teacher.

Depends what the student was in it for. If it was just something that they really enjoyed, despite a complete lack of ability, then I'll happily leave it up to them i they wanted to continue. Some people know they will never get anywhere but just enjoy themselves. I'd never say flat out that they'll never play though.I'll just tailor the lessons so that they will hopefully get something out of it.Even if it's the simplest thing ever, they will get the satisfaction of being able to play something. If it was through a continued lack of commitment,I'll tell them that they need to get their arse in gear-Some will and some won't.

Fodera Yin Yang - what do people think aesthetically?
Doddy replied to molan's topic in Bass Guitars
Sorry - my bad explanation. It takes twice as long to complete & fit the top, headstock and inlays compared to a 'regular' top (as opposed to the entire build process).
Ah ok. That makes total sense. -
Yep - takes twice as long to build apparently! I've not actually seen one in the flesh but I hear the craftsmanship is awesome
Twice as long?? It's great craftsmanship, but it's only the top that will really take longer than normal surely? -

I like 'em. -
Keep practising,it'll do you more good than just buying a compressor. It's also worth carrying on practising with a pick too.It may not be comfortable now,but like everything else, the more you do it the better you'll get.

Learning key signatures and increasing speed
Doddy replied to chilievans's topic in Theory and Technique
The 'Circle of fifths' is the best thing for learning key signatures. Basically starting on C,you have no sharps or flats. If you count up a fifth you come to G which has one sharp (F#), then up a fifth again to D which has two sharps (F#,C#) and so on. The,again starting on C,count down a fifth to F which has one flat (Bb),then down a fifth again to Bb which has two flats (Bb,Eb) and so on As far as speed and accuracy, concentrate on playing slowly and accurately, speed will improve naturally. It's better to learn things slow and right than fast and wrong. -
It's a style that get's on my moobs. Shades of Cranberries vocalist but with the annoying habit of creating extra syllables in words.
I saw her on 'This Morning' earlier and couldn't tell a word that she mimed.

I quite like it...... I've got a friend who does most of his wedding gigs on a Squier Hello Kitty guitar (modded with EMG's),so I've never seen them as childish. If you hate it that much, maybe it's time to get rid and get something else?

pain in index and middle finger of plucking hand
Doddy replied to leroydiamond's topic in Theory and Technique
yes i do rest my forearm on the bass. What is your opinion on this. thanks for your reply
Basically,by resting your forearm on the bass you are constricting the blood flow to your hand.I'm also guessing that you have a relatively sharp wrist angle. It's possible to eventually develop CTS by doing both of these. Try to raise your arm a little so that you are not resting it on the bass and try to keep your wrists pretty straight. Everyone does these things at times, but if you can get out of the habit,it's worth it in the long run. -
I played this on a jazz gig recently, and they had what looked like a chart from one of the Real Books for it, so if you have access to these, have a look there. Jennifer
Yeah,it's in volume two of the Real Book.

I like them and have used them for a while now. They are probably my favourites at the moment along with D'addario's.

I think the Chili's would win. Four against one......easy.

I've always recommended using the movable anchor technique. My thumb generally rests on the string below the one I'm playing. I've caught myself using the floating thumb live a couple of times, but I've never practiced it-It just feels awkward. In the upper register on a five or six string,my right hand is similar to what John Patitucci does,in that the ring and little fingers are muting the lower two strings while the thumb is anchored around the A and D strings. Some people claim that on extended range basses you need the floating thumb to clean things up,but I've never had a problem.
-
I've got no set practice routine. I may turn my iPod on and just play along,or I may break out some books and play through some really awkward stuff. At the moment I'm doing a lot of chord inversions,so after working on them for a while,I'll set up a loop (either a simple 2 or 3 chord vamp or the changes to some standard or something) and play ideas over the top. Occasionally I'll stop to work on an idea that I didn't quite execute well enough for my liking,or to pick out and expand on an improvised phrase. Sometimes I'll be listening to something and have the urge to learn it,which may lead to learning more stuff or taking small phrases and playing around with them. If I get really into it,I can easily sit for hours just playing through things. Other times,if I've been really busy,I may just play for half an hour just to keep my chops up. I'll have a load more stuff to practise at my next lesson in a couple of weeks time.....can't wait.

In all fairness,it should be an ace night. Janek is a great player and really knows his stuff. Plus,it's a great shop and hopefully,if it's a good turn out, they'll be able to put more of these events on. We need more Midlands based clinics.

Typical..... 10 minutes up the road from me and I'm gigging in Birmingham. Nevermind,I'll have to make other plans.......

With you mentioning Charvel....Academy of Sound have got a Charvel Star Bass in stock at a great price. I didn't find it too heavy either (it's just the wrong shape for me.). low tuning, finger playing, flapping strings, thumb rest?
Doddy replied to Chest Rockwell's topic in General Discussion
Instead of lowering your pickups, why not try raising your action? I can't abide a low action, far too little tension on the B string for my heavy right hand technique.
The height of the string has no bearing on its tension.
hmm. didnt really know what a ramp was but think it might not be my style! looks too 'pro musican' for me I could higher the action a little maybe, it's possible i've been overzealous dropping the pickup, maybe the solution is there, which would make it a lot easier! trouble is that we do a few things around the 12th fret and beyond on the E string and I dont really want to fight it... cos i also play pretty low slung and reaching down there isnt easy! style vs substance eh
What you really need is to use the bottom 4 strings of a 5 string set-It'll work better for the low tuning. Also, you will need to make the nut slots a little wider to accommodate the thicker strings-That's why your strings pop out of the nut. Don't worry about looking 'too pro musician',as it's obviously much cooler to be struggling and 'amateur'. -
As I've said in past threads,I neither lend my amp or borrow one. I don't care if I'm 'headlining' ( a bullshit term meaning you're on last) or playing earlier, it takes no time at all to set up my amp,and even less time and space if I use my combo. I've had bands be sent home when they walked in with no amps and drums and expect to use ours. It's just not happening.

So.......... ......I still don't know what this system is,and why I'm not supposed to like it?

pain in index and middle finger of plucking hand
Doddy replied to leroydiamond's topic in Theory and Technique
Do you rest your forearm on the bass? That could be causing a problem.Without seeing you play it's hard to say. There's no reason to be reluctant to use a pick, especially if it helps to relieve some of the strain on your fingers. -
What???? What's this system, and why does that make them our enemy?
