touring
I love it and appreciate it for what it was. I hate bands that slag off touring saying its hard work and really boring.
I love it,but let's be honest it's not easy-especially if you are doing a self financed tour, with little money involved. By tour,I don't mean three or four days on the trot-I mean weeks. If you've got a decent gig it is certainly easier, although you may end up travelling on your own which can be very tiring. It's not for everone. People see the couple of hours on stage and hear the stories, but don't know(or want to know) about the other 22 hours a day-Alot of bands have split after doing badly run tours. I've grown up around touring-spending time in hotels and dingy caravans on theatre car parks, driving for ten hours a day and getting home in daylight-and I'm doing it myself now,so I have a pretty good idea how it works........And I wouldn't have it any other way.
EBS - really clean sound, can get synthy using the switching options, but i found it too clean for my current needs. I'm sure it will return for other projects. it terms of sound, think Earth Song by michael Jackson
Although Alex Al used the EBS Octabass on the live version of 'Earth Song' from 'This Is It', the original album version was Guy Pratt with a Boss OC2.
  7.
The only one I can wholeheartedly recommend is out of print and requires that you to read standard notation - not what most people want.
It might not be what most people want, but it's what they need. That's one reason I like the Ed Friedland book. It teaches you the notes early on,and although it uses tab (urgh!) near the beginning,it quickly gets rid of it. The Chuck Rainey series of books are good for that too. None of them feature tab,but they contain alot of good information.
  8. It's a Modulus Graphite neck. I've got an old video of Sting live from ,I think, the Ten Summoners Tales' tour and he uses the Precision with Modulus neck all the way through. It sounds great-like a P-Bass with extra 'snap' .

    touring

As glamourous as it sounds, touring is bloody hard work. As has already been mentioned sleeping in a van,on top of gear,is not ideal but it happens. Living on fast food,Ginsters pasties and motorway coffee is far from healthy but often a necessity. You may be best mates with the guys in the band, but living in each others pockets for however long can cause some big tensions, especially when you are driving for six or seven hours a day. I love it.
  10. It was the cover story in Bass Player back in February.
  11.
I suppose it could open up an argument about how to share out any band income in terms of the individual member's capital investments, but I think we're a long way from having to worry about that.
If one guy owns the all the PA and/or the communal van then they should get a larger cut,but if everyone owns certain pieces of gear and drives themselves you can divvy up the money evenly.

    Octave

I use both the EBS Octabass(original style) and a Boss OC2. The Boss one is great as it can get very 'synthy' and can go down two octaves(I've not tried the OC3 so can't comment on it),whereas the EBS has a smoother sound. As an octaver,I think that the EBS is the cleaner, better pedal but I actually use the Boss more because of it's 'synthy' qualities. I tried out the MXR Bass Octave Deluxe and it was really nice. I didn't think it was as smooth as the EBS though,it seemed to have a bit more grit. They are all good pedals though.
  13. I'd recommend the Hal Leonard Bass Method by Ed Friedland-especially if you can find the complete edition with all three books in one. It's also spiral bound so will sit comfortably on a music stand, which to me is a big plus.
  14. I'd really try to avoid the whole 'band PA' thing. I don't believe it's a good way of handling things,as often it is likely to cause arguments down the line. If you must all go in on a rig,why not split it up, ie. one of you buys and owns the lights, another buys and owns the monitors etc. At least then, everyone knows who owns what and it makes the inevitable split easier.
  15. So,I've just bought a copy of the Haynes Fender Bass Manual (really good book BTW),and in the section on Jaco it mentions that his Bass had 'Fender replacement tone controls, and one capacitor removed'. Now,I know that the 'Bass of Doom' was a '62 Jazz, and I believe that Fender started using the 3 knob layout in '62 also,so it is possible that the tone controls were original and not a replacement.I've seen pictures of him with stacked knob Jazzes, but none of these were the 'Bass of Doom' This is also the first I've heard about his bass having a capacitor removed. Basically,I'm wondering if anyone has any information on this that I may have missed,as generally I'm pretty up on Jaco. Of course,I may be mistaken.

I've only just seen this.... That's such sad news. He'll be much missed.
  18.
I can guarantee that Adam Clayton would be a more than capable bass player. People miss the point when they talk about players being limited by their technical ability, technical ability is completely irrelevant when you are one of the most successful recording and live artists of all time. In the grand scheme of things very few people that enjoy listening to popular music would be phased by a musicians perceived technical inefficiencies on their instrument. Like I've said before there are plenty of bands out there that sound brilliant because they are capable of making brilliant music out of what they've got. Who cares if Keith Moon can't play drums or if Lennon was a bad piano player? They're superb musicians.
I agree with you that the vast majority of people don't care about technique and all that and that there are great bands that are made up of 'not great' instrumentalists. But in this particular case we're talking about the specifics of the bass player and not whether or not the band is any good, otherwise I'd be giving different answers. I'd class Keith Moon as a fantastic showman/entertainer but not as a superb musician.
  19.
Even if that is the limit of their abilities, if it fits the song where's the problem? Can you honestly say that Hadrien Feraud would improve "New Year's Day"?
I'm all for playing what fits the song, but playing essentially the same thing in every song makes me think that it's nothing to do with musicality. If a player like Will Lee or Nathan East was to play a simple root note line you know that it's because it is the best thing to play, whereas with someone like Adam Clayton I get the feeling that that is all he can do.
  20.
Seems to me that there's a big confusion in this thread between technical ability and musicality. I would have thought an awful bassist is someone who has no empathy/fit/vibe with the band he/she plays in.
But does a player like Guigsy or Clayton play chugging 8th notes because musically it's the best thing to play,or because they are limited by their abilities and that is all that they can play? To me there is a big difference.
  21. As much as I love my nice fancy basses-Roscoe,Tobias,Shuker,-I still find myself reaching for one of my six Fenders most of the time. No matter what basses I take to a gig,I always have at least one Fender with me.
  22. I think that was the logo that Fender used on the Telecaster Bass, which was very similar bass to the original 50's style Precision. I've seen a similar logo on the Telecaster II,but with an added 'II' obviously. I could be wrong though.
  23.
no. how?
I believe it's pronounced Too-nis.
  24.
20 quid plus postage plus you might have to pay duty.
Or £34.99 from Mansons. Suddenly a multimeter sounds like a better idea.
