1. Just heard that Robert Wilson from the Gap Band has died aged 53. Sad news.... He played some funky bass.
 2. I think that you can create a good walking line by just sticking to the strong chord tones as long as you can make it swing like crazy. Unfortunately, that's where 'Moondance' falls down for me-it just doesn't swing in the slightest. It's really stiff ,and doesn't seem to go anywhere. For what it's worth I don't mind the song,I'd just never use it as an example of,or class it,as Jazz.
 3. I saw the ad for that a couple of months ago in Bass Player- It looks great. I've been using the Realist for years now,and if the soundclip can live up to it,it should be great. It's a great idea for a player with multiple basses,or for a touring player who has to rent instruments on the road.
 4.
Re TAB. My opinion when I teach reading is to avoid it. Why? because I've never done a gig (pro or not) and had tab put in front of me.
Exactly. Tab simply doesn't exist in the gigging world.
Yeah, the only thing TAB might be good for is to demonstrate positions of notes on the fingerboard, but even then 90% of the time you should be learning these shapes for yourself from the dots!
Even then,if you know the notes on both the stave and the fingerboard it makes the tab irrelevant.
 5.
But I suppose it does have a gold plated connector....
Which means nothing unless your jack socket is also gold. I still think that it could be a handy little device though.
 6.
While we're on the subject, does anyone know why the Roscoe website hasn't been updated for about 2 years?
They're probably too busy making stunning instruments like this
 7. I like the idea. They could prove to be a very useful piece of kit. Plus,Victor Wooten advertises them
 8.
I would write to her, Doddy. Here's the address: Tal Wilkenfeld c/o Vinnie Colaiuta's Gaff Drummers Drive Jazzville Arizona USA Don't forget to include an SAE.
9.
She needs a trademark hat. Here's one I'd recommend: [url="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.srcf.ucam.org/~apc38/spraak/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/57612465-300x246.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.srcf.ucam.org/~apc38/spraak/archives/date/2009/04&usg=__bqhi082f2bgMweGlnEwWd3HqiAs=&h=246&w=300&sz=14&hl=en&start=0&tbnid=xS3pQ0KKZLwLWM:&tbnh=139&tbnw=163&prev=/images%3Fq%3Daussie%2Bhat%2Bcorks%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG%26biw%3D1280%26bih%3D865%26gbv%3D2%26tbs%3Disch:1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=912&vpy=79&dur=49&hovh=196&hovw=240&tx=85&ty=114&ei=LPhnTOK5ApKD4QbpxamZBA&oei=LPhnTOK5ApKD4QbpxamZBA&esq=1&page=1&ndsp=38&ved=1t:429,r:6,s:0"]http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http...=1t:429,r:6,s:0
Haha
 10.
These people could pick anyone, maybe they hear something you don't?
Maybe they do. I was watching a clip of Tal playing 'Chameleon' with Herbie this morning, and for my money,it sounds weaker than when I've heard it with players like Nathan East,Matt Garrison or James Genus. Similarly with Chick,I always wonder why she only did a short tour of Australia with him,and why he continually chooses players like Christian McBride or Mike Pope over her. Like I said, she can play, but I think there are better.I would also like to see her in a situation where she doesn't have the support of Vinnie Colaiuta, who is without a doubt the common denominator in all of her major gigs.
 11.
I was watching the Tal clip again and can appreciate why people think she might be so acclaimed. Personally, I disgaree, and genuinely believe she's a great player who deserves every accoloade she gets. Regardless of who she may be 'piping off', Jeck Beck isn't going to have a slouch playing with him. Nor is Chick Corea, and all the other top artists that have hired her
Fair enough. She can play, but I honestly think that there are waaaay better players out there who aren't getting the gigs. As far as female players go,both Rhonda and Esperanza blow her away. Like I said earlier,Tal doesn't belong in a thread about 'awful bassists'-overrated ones yes,but not awful.
 12. I usually use an Aphex Bass Exciter with my Upright. It works as a good DI and gives me a bit of extra tone control.
 13. I have my action pretty high on my Upright, and lower on my Electric Upright. I think it gives a better tone acoustically and also works well for both bowing and slapping.
 14.
Post better?
You mean of me playing?
 15. I think it's probably a guy...... This video looks more 'boyish'............... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHMrTtRxtM8...feature=related He/She is decent,but incredible? I don't think so.
 16.
Correct Andy, by the 'Musos', Flea is seen as a joke. Why? Well because he's commercial and successful in a mass market way. But not only did he play the best groove, he's probably the only bassist there who anyone under 40 would recognise. Interestingly he tries to keep a low profile all the same (perhaps he didn't want to be there)?
Is Flea seen as a joke? I don't think so. Sure,he doesn't particularly blow me away, but I don't know anyone who thinks that he's a joke. Also,I'm under 40(actually under 30) and I know every player on the stage.
 17.
These guys, Flea excepted http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=98733&hl= C
In that video, maybe. But check them out in their 'day gigs' and there is no way you could call any of them awful. Once again, people's opinions of 'awful' has come down to who you like band-wise. If you like Dream Theater then Myung is ace, if you don't then he's awful. In reality the guy has got some chops and isn't an awful player, there are both far better and far worse players. Now, there are a large number of rock and indie bass players(take your pick) who really have no idea what they're doing, they just chug along on roots, not because it's the best thing for the music but because that is all they know how to,and can, do. Those players,to me, are the ones that I'm most likely to class as poor.
 18. Gary Willis is a great player. I saw him in clinic a while back and he was killing and had a good attitude too. I love his first solo album 'No Sweat'. It's one of my favourite 'bass player' albums.
 19.
Steve Bailey gets my vote any day of the week - completely OTT player with little in the way of soul. It's all technique and flash in the pan pyrotechnics that are totally dull and uninspiring! All those false harmonics, many of which are never in tune... boring.
All I'll say about Steve Bailey,is that you don't get to tour and record with artists as diverse as Dizzy Gillespie and Jethro Tull if you are all flash and pyrotechnics. He's another player that had become know for the 'Bass Extremes' thing, but had paid his dues for years prior to it.
 20.
Best bit of advice (can't remember which book I got it from) was to learn the different rhythm combinations of 16th notes as sounds rather than counting them 1e&a 2e&a 3e&a 4e&a etc. For example, a sixteenth, an eighth and sixteenth would be ba baaaaa ba rather than 1e a.
I would never recommend learning rhythms this way. Eventually you will begin to recognise patterns and won't have to count them, but I would always suggest that you learn to count initially. That way you can still play through any unfamiliar rhythms by counting. If you just learn the sounds and you come across a rhythm you've not previously seen, you'll be buggered.
 21.
He has shagged a lot of women, to be fair. They're obviously not interested in his playing.
Good point
 22.
Nice to be first out of the blocks sometimes! ATK310 - comes with a free Bo Derek? (now really starting to show my age)
Have they run out of Dudley Moore's?
 23. There is something on Victor Wooten's site that helps you identify the notes.
 24.
10?
Beat me to it. It looks like the 300 has a maple 'board compared to the 310's Rosewood. That's all that I can see different.
 25.
Just to illustrate your point. Although to be fair, it is just about the show... Still goddamn awful.
That's like those videos where the guy overdubs really bad playing over Jaco and Mark King footage. .....Only real.
